- Full OMP M2 V2 review, including unboxing, comparison to the OMPHobby M2 V1 & M2 Explore versions finishing off with some flying fun.
The OMP M2 V2 is OMP Hobby's top spec'd 200 size M2 RC helicopter. Key differences between it and the lower spec M2 Explore version include:
- Full metal servo cases (same internals, metal gears, speed & torque same as EXP servos).
- Full metal swashplate.
- Full metal main rotor head blade grips.
- Canopy color matched main & tail motor & tail rotor mounting plate.
- Different canopy graphics.
I'm a huge fan of OMP Hobby's M2 helicopters in all their formats primarily due to both build & component quality; along with the impressive performance, efficiency, robustness & quietness of the direct drive main rotor brushless motor. It should come as no surprise I'm equally impressed with the M2 V2. All these little M2 helicopters are awesome little fliers and feel larger than they are while flying. The bright popping colors further help airborne visual presence.
If you are in the market for a 200 size 3D RC helicopter, do consider putting OMPHobby's M2's on your short list. If you want a solid performer that costs less, pick the M2 Explore version. It's has the same great performance & feel of the M2 V2, and some would argue, better canopy graphics. If however you want all metal components and the "eye candy" appeal, the M2 V2 still represents very good value & bang for the buck.

Just moved to a modest house with a massive deck.. These OMP M2's are perfect. These are serious, NO JOKE birds.. monster performance of a much larger (& more exlensive) bird, in a nice "go anywhere " package.

So good to hear your voice again and see that you're doing well! Looks like a nifty little machine John! I am still having fun with my little Blade 230S. Being retired and on solely on low-income Social Security, I can no longer just try different choppers. And unfortunately, I still have had no luck with my Assault 450, or the AZ505. Guess I will sell them on eBay. I think I'm just too old (almost 72), along with some med. problems, to perform any successful set-ups or flights. The 230S is the only one I've had success flying. Such a sweet little bird! I think I'll even try my old Super Cub again this summer. Again, really good to see that you're doing well, and TTYL! Best regards, Michael C in PA.

I just purchased the M2 V2 for my first 3d heli. Been playing on the sim for a couple of months and this one seemed like a great little model. Don't expect any 3d flying from me, however! Slow and steady wins the race 😅

Quick question(s)....after binding, I assume you need to go through and set up switch functions on the tx somehow? right? Is it similar to setting up a quadcopter via betaflight? Do you have a video on it, or is it covered in depth in your book? thanks in advance

I have a couple Blades, a 230 V2 and a Nano, and a 3rd which is based off the 230 but built I scratch built with microheli parts. After seeing the reviews for these things I picked one up as the 3D ability looked to be better than what the 230 is capable of.
What surprised me the most is, I bought the M2 Explore version, which was on sale for like 249, and it came with a sticker saying it was an "upgraded version" and came with metal blade grips and a full metal swash. So I basically got the M2 V2 for the price of the Explore, even without the "upgraded" version its an amazing helicopter for the price, but on sale and an upgrade Explore for 250 is basically a steal. The only thing different with mine is the canopy isn't fiberglass, its plastic. Its a heavier duty plastic compared to something like the Blade 230's plastic canopy, but definitely isn't fiberglass. Which I'm not too bummed over, as I'll take a plastic canopy for the free upgrade to metal parts; can always cast my own from fiberglass or just get a new one if ever needed.

Great review and flying. What intrigues me is the OMPHobby M2 V2 now costs $399, that's approaching the Align Trex 450L territory. The 450L combo version (with brushless motor, ESC, 4 servos, and MicroBeast gyro) costs $405. The M2 is a very expensive helicopter for the size.
Yep, or we could compare it to the Mikado Logo 200 Super Combo which is the exact same size (almost the same heli) and it's $600.00; in which case the M2 is a bargain. It's all relative. You can find more expensive and less expensive examples of any size machine. It comes down to which ticks off the most boxes for your needs, your flying style, your specific flying area and most importantly, which puts a bigger grin on your face after a flight. The M2's & Logo 200's have some pretty big grin factor 🙂

I’m going to get this as my first heli. However can I follow your flight school in a sim and be able to have a better first day with a real RC heli? I know it’s helped me in the plane department. I’ve been flying them around for about a month but just learning it by myself with no guidance so I want to go back and learn from your flight schooll
Yep, the fundamentals of learning collective pitch apply for everything. Fit a set of training gear, tame down the settings, and follow my or any other flight training program. Most importantly, have fun & appreciate the process.

Thanks - Nope, the carbon boom mount from the V1 has a different mounting layout due to the shorter frames. Of course, almost anything is possible with some head scratching followed by modification 🙂
In addition, the rear tail motor and fin mount between the two is also different (I show the differences in detail in the M2 EXP version review); so that would also have to be changed to the old V1 clamp style tail motor/fin mount.
As an absolute RC heli beginner, I missed the narration in the flying segment of the video. I can see what it does, but the real value is your thoughts about it. Plus non-visuals such as modes and such. Other than that, love the videos you make!
I figured since it would be exactly the same narration as in the M2 Explore review, it was of little value. They are the same helicopter after all other than the metal upgrades, and different canopy color schemes. I can't tell any difference flying either - both feel identical (with the same setup) 🙂
Can I fly the original M2 on a a Flysky fs-isx radio, and if so what do i need? Im recently getting back into Flying and im not up to spec on the electronics just yet. Thanks!
The M2's FBL system has an S-bus input, so as long as you can get a small RX that has an S-Bus output port, it will work. I don't know a thing about FlySky so no idea what RX options are out there for it.

If you want a great flying little 200 size heli, the OMP wins out hands down.
If you want a zero skill, artificial GPS autopilot flying experience 200, the FW200 is the one.

I just got a M2 V2 I guess , flying with a QX7 Sbus RX , I find the collective rather mushy or not very connected ... I do have a linear pitch curve , any idea why that is ?
Without knowing your min/max collective pitch range (in degrees) along with what head speed you are running - I'm in the dark . The M2 will have almost scary collective response when running +/-13 degrees at full RPM.

Hi Steve, the EXP version is a wonderful little heli. I can't detect any difference between it and the V2 when flying both back to back. If anything the EXP has a little more "pop" because it's just a smidgen lighter using the plastic bits over the aluminum; but that could just be my flawed human brain's cognitive bias going all out monkey. 🙂

I see there are two hex screws on either. Do I need to hold one while I unscrew the other? Seems to be awful hard to turn but I’m using that cheap hex thing they include. Thanks man.
Hi, when you put back the blades on the M2 V2 or EXPLORER, how tight do you tighten the screw and nut? Do you leave any looseness at all or at tight at it can be?
You keep them fairly loose on a small heli like the M2's so they can easily lead and lag correctly. The smaller & lighter the blade, the looser they are torqued. I have a video on this in the flight school section of my website. Both blades should also be fairly equally torqued so they lead and lag the same amount as to not create an out of balance rotor head every time the blades lead & lag.
@@Rchelicopterfun hmm do u have a video to show how loose or tight the blades are on the M2? say when its sideways, will the blade just fall, or it will stay where it is...?
@@zackriso3945 Nothing specific on the M2. I set mine so they barely hold horizontal when held side ways. Any movement whatsoever and they will succumb to gravity. Somewhere in that range will be fine.

Hey John. Do you need to strip the head and grease, loctite, etc before flight?
That is up to the individual. Personally at minimum, I would check the head axle bolts for torque and loctite. I simply don't trust any pre-built heli regardless of brand to be assembled with the care I personally put into a heli build. With that said, the 4 OMP helicopters I have, all of them were done correctly. Still, checking at minimum the head axle bolts takes a minute or two so is well worth that small time investment IMO. "A stich in time saves nine" 🙂
Need help. i have never used a satellite receiver. I have a Spectrum DX7 and a Futaba T8FG radio. Can you provide link and part numbers as to what I need to bind these two radios to this heli? The one you referenced here at Bangood for the Futaba has been discontinued. Also Is there a detailed video of how to hook this up to the existing receiver board? I am a long time 50yr+ RC modeler but have flown manly airplanes. I have been flying some small micro helicopters but want to move up. I plane on getting your ebook as well. Thanks
I'm not a Futaba expert, so I don't know what protocol the T8FG uses? If it's S-FHSS, there are a number of small S-FHSS S-BUS RX's on the market. OMP has one specifically for their helicopters and that is the one I would recommend. I use it on my OMP 2 V1, and show how to hook it up in that review video. th-cam.com/video/rSQPMPPGoYc/w-d-xo.html
It has not been discontinued, Banggood is just not stocking it any more for some reason. If you Google search "OMP Mini S-FHSS RX", you'll find other places that have it. Even just Googling "Mini S-FHSS S-BUS RX" other brands will come up.
The caveat with that OMP RX is once again, it will only work if your T8FG runs S-FHSS protocol. If it doesn't (eg.FASST protocol) then you will have to see what is out there for for FASST mini S-BUS RX's. Again, I'm not a Futaba user so no idea what is out there for receivers with their various spread spectrum protocols.
For Spektrum's DSM protocol, again several options - use your Google Fu. Any of the small DSM2/X sattelite RX's will work such as the Kensun Satellite Receiver. It's my recommendation since it has a built in bind button so you don't have to hook it up to a full function Spektrum RX to put it into bind mode. You can bind it right from the heli by holding in the bind button on the RX, just like the OMP mini S-BUS RX.
As for hooking either a DSM satellite or S-BUS mini RX up to the control board, it's about as simple as it gets. You plug it into either the DSM port if it's a DSM RX, or the S-BUS port if it's an S-BUS RX. Bind (as per your receiver's instruction) and you're done, other than setting up the radio for the helicopter.

Hi Tony - Very good questions 🙂 The M2's like any good quality collective pitch RC helicopter can be excellent trainers, provided you (or your instructor) set them up for learning on. This means having a docile collective range, docile cyclic range, docile tail rotor response, lower head speeds, and of course, fitting training gear while you are performing your ground hovering exercises and working on your orientations. I have the H1 V2 FC version of the FlyWing FW200...an it's AMAZING! Only problem, an the deal-breaker, is that in Stable mode or Stable Acro mode, it is VERY slow. Like, REALLY slow. Manual mode is fine. Also the Auto-land/RTH function takes forever without being able to adjust any settings. There MIGHT be something with the bluetooth app on a smartphone, but I've only heard of the iOS version an cannot find the Android one, though I hear it exists somewhere.
For these reasons, I'm getting an OMP M2. Same size class, with stability when I need to "bail-out", but without the "return to home" feature, which is fine by me.
Hi John, what is your throttle curve on NML, MD1 and MD2 ? I have been flying mine under EdgeTx and it’s been great so far but on NML mode I do get a slight tail shake ( a little low on RPM?) but goes away under MD1 and MD2? I also noticed since I’ve seen your video on how to add telemetry but seem like EdgeTx is not sensing the sensors from the Heli. Thanks
@scrc511 - I fly all my OMP Heli's with the internal RX now, so I'm using their 3 governed head speeds selected by flat line throttle curves of -100, 0, & +100. I go over this in the OMP Protocol video I did: th-cam.com/video/PiuTGS3SHHg/w-d-xo.html
Lower head speed will cause tail twitching because the tail gain is too high for the speed & severity that torque changes & spikes are occurring in the main rotor (ie. larger gyro correction output than error reading input). This has nothing to do with tail motor speed since that is unaffected by the head speed on a motorized tail small heli. If you want to calm down the tail at low head speeds, lower the tail gain; keeping in mind the compromise is the tail lock will get a little mushy feeling at higher head speeds.
No idea on Edge - I don't use it.
@@Rchelicopterfun thanks John. I’ll look into switching mine to OMP protocol and see what happens. So on NML mode throttle curve is on -100, MD1 on 0 and MD2 on +100? I tried adding the telemetry but maybe external rx causing it not to recognize the sensors. I’ll look into it and if it doesn’t work, I’ll revert mine back to OpenTx. Thanks John.
Yes on the flight modes - just like I show in that video. As far as I know, OMP telemetry only works with the internal OMP RX; there is no sensor communication with external RX's. I mistakenly thought you were running on the internal RX.
@@Rchelicopterfun Thanks John, before leaving the house quickly checked my radio and I do have the OMP Protocol in my MPM so I’m good on that. All I need to do now is bind it to OMP Protocol and make adjustments on channel order just like you did. Mine will be under mixes I think, did u have to move things around under inputs?
@scrs511, everything I did including channel order mapping, I've outlined in that OMP protocol video that I mentioned above. That was of course using OTX, not Edge so not sure if there are any differences in the process.

Both are good little direct drive 200 size helicopters. When choosing one brand over the other, I always recommend get which is easiest to source parts for in your specific area. OMP is carried at more shops here in North America than Eachine, so that is what I generally recommend, but I have no idea what OMP part support is like in Spain. Eachine might be easier to source in your area - I honestly don't know?

I have a JR 9XII with Spektrum upgrade and the thing is going nuts
Cyclic only has 2 servos operating
If I go past 1/2 stick the tail goes off like the it's swapped with the main
If I turn off the TX then all servos operate and center.

Driving me nuts
RTF out of the box after binding like all of OMPHobby's helicopters. Of course, you still have to confirm everything is setup correctly (swash is level, symmetrical collective range, and that you set it up correctly for your flying style, skill level, and how you want it to behave). You know, the normal setup procedures & checks for any & all collective pitch RC helicopters.
Your issue sounds like your radio channel mapping is all screwed up, or you have some sort of weird mixing programming into your radio, or some sort of other radio compatibility issue.

Binding is not the issue if you are getting some control movement from the radio to the heli. Binding is a go / no go process. A receiver either binds to the transmitter or it doesn't. There is no partial binding, or binding that works sporadically. If this was a binding issue, you would have zero radio communication with the helicopter.

with direct drive, does that mean the blades cannot freewheel and do autorotations?
Nope - these large diameter, hi torque direct drive motors freewheel well with very little clogging/field resistance; but autos on small helis like this are very difficult/impossible regardless of drive type. The M2 can do them, but it's difficult to maintain enough rotor energy.
Anyone knows if the all-metal swash plate on the M2 V2 would fit on the M2 EXPL?
Yes they are both the exact same helicopter just the explore has plastic parts instead of metal

Hi, How much flight time should we set as an alarm for a 650mah battery and a 700mah battery? I think the site mentions 8min normal, and about 4-5 min 3D?
It totally depends on head speed/s and flying style/s. The only way to accurately set a flight time is to experiment and see how depleted your pack/s are after numerous flights while checking pack voltages/capacities so you never deplete over 80% capacity for your particular head speed/s & flying styles. Personally, I have my timer set to 4:30 minutes on the M2's flying my style of sport flight and most times the packs come down between 70% & 80% discharged depending on how hard I fly during any given sport flight. Hard 3D would likely be around 3 minutes, tame around 7 to 8, but again, it's all dependent on how much power you are pulling during the flight.
@@Rchelicopterfun Thanks. So for very smooth (no 3D) flights, it can probably go 7minutes or so. I am trying to get Telemetry working so I can see batt voltage on the TX16S, would be better than guessing (wont work with version 59 that I have). But I am thinking to even get the HK110 since the M2 seems to be way too powerful for a beginner.
The M2 can be tamed right down to a gently flying trainer if you want it to be with tame dual rates low head speed and tame pitch curve, and for that type of flying, yes, you are likely very safe with 7 minutes assuming you are not lifting the extra weight of training gear? If you are using training gear, take at least a minute off your flying time.
Best of course to take a voltage reading of the pack/s right after the flight as I mention on the LiPo battery page of my website ( www.rchelicopterfun.com/lipo-batteries.html ) to ensure the voltage per cell is around 3.75V which should be about 75 to 80% discharged on a healthy pack. If the voltage is higher than that, you can likely go a little longer, but always double check the open circuit voltage right after the flight to make sure you are not over discharging the packs. 🙂
@@Rchelicopterfun Yup, and with telemetry, I can land it as soon as I hit 3.75 (and set a timer how long it took to reach that voltage). I am using the OMP protocol with a TX16S, and a model I downloaded from another vid, but am really not sure how to tame the DR, head speed, and pitch curves. Are those done via the TX16S directly, lets say, throttle from 100% to say 70%? or its more involved than that?
@@Rchelicopterfun Another thing I forgot, the Flight controller on the M2 can be changed (in this case to lower settings), would not that be the same as changing the rates on the receiver? or they are 2 different things? Thanks a lot for your help

Hi John, as an absolute novice I have been waiting for your review on the M2, I am considering buying one of these. Would it be a good choice? Where I live in the UK I have no Heli Flyers locally to help me or give any advice. Your advice and books (already downloaded ) seem to give very honest and straight forward help. I am yet to get off the ground
@Hnala - I'm presuming this would be your first CP helicopter??? If so, like pretty much any collective pitch RC helicopter, the M2 can certainly be tamed down into a nice docile trainer with the right setup. Fit a set of training gear on it and you're set.
Flight times on the M2 are fairly long with lower head speeds (about 7 minutes) so that's also a plus when learning (less interruptions).
Size wise it's nice as well but it's not as crash proof as a little micro like 100 size K-110 for example. On the plus side, it's more stable than a tiny micro, will handle some wind and is a much better quality helicopter.
Out of the two OMP Hobby M2 options, you'll get better bang for the buck with the Explore version IMO. As shown in the video, the EXP version is basically the same heli, less the metal upgrades & eye-candy. For learning & progressing on, the EXP would be the one out of the two I would recommend because of the better value.
With that said, it's still a fairly big investment for a "first" CP heli (if this is going to be your first CP helicopter). For some, it would be too much of an investment if you don't even know if you'll enjoy the hobby yet, but that is all based on your budget. @@Rchelicopterfun Thanks for your reply John, basically I have bought 2 second hand heli's a Trex 450 and a Blade 450 both with no instructions. I also have the Radiomaster TX16s.
Both of the Heli's are giving me problems with setup, I cant get them stable enough to hover and I have no one to help get them stable other than ppl like you and your books (which are a very helpful). The money I have spent so far I should really have gone and bought a Trex 450 RTF but thought I would save money and bought S/Hand. My bad as they say.
To cut my losses my thoughts are to use the Radiomaster and get the OMPHobby M2. At least I should be able to get off the ground and at least hover. I can come back to the other 2 Heli's later on the bad weather days and learn stuff over the coming winter.

@@hnala8508 Id recommend watching a few of Johns videos on tx16s and the k110 as he has already indicated as one route. You can use his video link and get one for 60-70 dollars on BG and it will be MUCH less punishing while you learn setup and basic flight. It will also aid you as a tool down the road to transition into 3d flight.
@@yeetcannon1693 Yes thanks, I did look at the K110 but for me it is too small as i dont have the indoor room to 'fly' a micro and outside we dont get many days of no 'breeze' so to speak. This is why I think the OMP M2 would suit my purpose better. Having bought 2, 450 size heli's with problems I feel I need to get something more stable 'out of the box' .

I have had heli’s for many years while there has been some fantastic advances there has not been many that have been built with all the best parts available there is always some cheap bits put in. Imagine if they took some pages from the drone builders make a line up with the plastic starter helicopter then a carbon version and a design and build your own with different frames servos etc all available to pic and choose as a standard option.
We've had that ability for decades with most heli kits. You can get a base kit and bling it out with the most costly components going or go budget. Nothing new there.

Why direct drive? It just seems to mean the motor is going to be heavier.... What's the point?

Shame about the carbon being thinner. Shame when you get a good product and when it takes off ( no pun intended) and sells well ,they cut back on quality OR save money .
My guess is it's more for weight savings over cost savings but what do I know. When pricing out both .75mm and 1mm carbon plate, prices are almost equal. No question, this year's versions are lighter than last year's version. Personally, I'd rather have more robustness & mass over slight performance improvements of a lighter airframe, but I'm no hard core 3D'er either - just a simple sport & scale flier.

Totally different helicopter. Can't really compare a 200 size to a 100 size. But as the saying goes in the world of RC helicopters, bigger is better (totally dependent on flying area of course).
The carbon on the catch is cracked because carbon fiber is not meant to bend. :)
Actually carbon fiber can make a great spring - when designed to do so.

They seem to get smaller and smaller these helicopters, but this one sounds and moves like a pro. Thanks for the reply, makes me feel human🙂. Not many normal people around here anymore. Yep, you really hear the tail blade interaction more without it being partially masked by main motor gear whine.
Very expensive
The price reflects both the quality & performance - the M2 offers great value - period. Be thankful you are not getting into the hobby when I did back in the late 80's. I spent close to $2K for my first RC heli (X-Cell 40), nitro engine, and radio system which is equivalent to over $4K in today's money. Now we can get an amazing little heli like this for the cost of 3 tanks of gas - it doesn't get any more affordable then that.
