Extra tip: if you have a vice you can clamp the jig into after you put the skirt on then you can stretch the strands out while cutting the tabs off. It separates the strands super quick instead of having to pull thru them with your fingers at the end. (Not sure if I explained that clearly or not...) Great vid, man! 👍💯

Thanks for the tips. You can never have too much quality real world tips and modifications for jig fishing. It's a art that takes a lifetime of on the water experience and practice to master and every time out on the water you something new. Jig fishing is truly awesome.

Important Tip! When you were talking about thinning the weed guard, if you just cut the weed guard back with scissors it still leaves the base of the weed guard stiff because it’s still imbedded in the jig head. Instead if you want to thin out the weed guard, if you take a pair of pliers and pull the weed guard strands out one by one then you can control the amount of flexibility of the entire weed guard. Man I absolutely love tying and making my own jig combos. Many different ways to tie the tabs onto the jigs and cut the fibers etc. I also remove the factory weedguards and replace with the 1/8" heavy guard and the 3/16" heavy guards from boss outdoors and then trim length down, spread guard wider and then trim some off the back where it is stiff and covers around the hook point but doesn't prevent the point from coming through.

I have a cool trick for hooking a chunk on. Get a toothpick and pierce it through the top of the chunk just above where the hook will go, this keeps the chunk from tearing off as easy. Just pierece the hook right below the toothpick and trim the excess wood

You can push toothpick through front of chunk, side to side. Then bring hook through backside of pick....chunk will stay on 4ever..

Wow! So different than how I have been using them. Guess I am hitting up academy at lunch. EDIT: 6 Hours later, I am using a variation since Academy only had some somewhat similar items. Caught a nice one in a hard catch area, another smaller one in a gale, and then found a monster in a water retention pond who promptly snapped my 20 pound braid, took the lure, and catapulted the second half of my pole way back in the bushes behind me. But I know where he is now.
Would like to tie that one on my Lake King retractable flipping stick from the old days and have at it!
Dark colors work well for all fish species. I'm from the Noth west. Salmon, steelhead, and trout love dark colors, its the blod profile i believe. Also I believe that's why more ppl catch fish in the early morning or late evening because all colors are dark in low light.
I'm going to get this set up soon.
Biggest bass of 2020 was caught on a black and blue jig, dragging past a drain pipe in a series of 3 small public ponds. Everyone was talking smack saying I was using too big of tackle, throwing Texas rigs and neds and catching panfish sized bass. Their mouth’s shut when I pulled a 4.5 lb LMB out.

Good stuff randy, I’m big on jig fishing so any tips to change it up and enhance my jig fishing is huge, I hand tie all my own jigs myself with the old school living rubber that stuff is amazing 🤩 keep up the great tips
Remember shorter weed guards make it harder to set the hook because the weed guard becomes very stiff!!! longer weed guards make the hook come threw easier. I’ve done it like this no good better off just taking half of them out and it’ll bend with ease
Great video Randy. Have you ever used the tail end of a worm on your jigs as the trailer? I saw an old timer doing it with a Manns worm but never tried it.
Anything you can do different from other fishermen around you (to a certain point) usually works. I like using the 3.5 swimming senko as a jig trailer. Try that one.
Ribbontail worms are my preferred jig trailer, especially when swimming a jig. They just flat-out work. Split/double-tailed grubs are also fantastic. Hope this helps.

Hi Randy, thanks for the video. Why don't you thread the trailer through the middle of it and push it up the shank and omit the worm piece, resulting in the trailer being threaded higher up the hook?

There is none. The chunk style trailers are less realistic. Now the old uncle Josh type pork trailers had an advantage because of the meaty texture and the flavor made bass hold on longer and sometimes the bass even tried swallowing the jig. The plastic chunks are not the same. My favorite are the Jordan Lee champ series craws. They look super realistic and the claws float so when you pause they stand up like a ned rig. And the biggest thing for me is cutting all but a few strands of the weed guard off only leaving maybe four or five. This is plenty to protect the hook from brush but not enough to get in the way of a hook set. Or in mostly open water or sparce cover cut them all off. I missed tons of fish till I started doing it this way now its very rare. Peace bro. Hope this helps.

Do you rig a super chunk with fat side down as well? Also if you thread it up on the hook should it still be fat side towards the back?

Pro tip- instead of trick words use used senkos they’re thicker and you can use any part of them not just the egg sack

You did not rub the trailer to bring the salt to surface?
Randy do you still rough up the plastic trailer like you normally do and do you use any scent on the jig and trailer?
I also seen some tips with that same trailer taking a toothpick sticking in the side at the top and breaking it off to save the trailer from short strikes.
To flip a jig this size how stiff a rod do you use? I like a 7’ but usually use med heavy. Should I use a heavy.
My personal opinion/preference is MH for lightwire jigs and H for thickwire (heavy duty) jigs using 17 -20lb fluorocarbon line. A 6'9" to 7'6" rod should be fine, whatever you are most accurate with.
@@jyndoom I totally agree with length and accuracy. I'm 5 foot 9 inches tall and my perfect length flipping rod is 6 foot 10 inches with both my MH and H rods. I spent very good money on a couple of 7 foot 2 inch rods and just could not get my feel with them when flipping so they now serve as very good buzz bait and deep-diving crank bait rods.
