    I have a long and complicated relationship with Tim Burton's Batman Returns or Tim Burton Batman sequel. For the longest time I couldn't stand the film and found it too offputting, too out there, not really Batman enough, too Tim Burton. It wasn't until adulthood that I started to really appreciate what Burton was going for with his second Batman movie. He was adapting the comic Batman for a visual format while adding in everything that makes a Tim Burton movie a Tim Burton movie. It's a commentary on power dynamics, reclaiming and losing it, the evil in the status quo, how the only way to combat it is to become a symbol of that ugliness, freedom of expression and liberation, and so SO much more. It's a film not only explores Michael Keaton Batman and his psychological torment but how his rogue's gallery mirrors that with Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman and Danny DeVito's The Penguin. On top of ALL of that, Batman Returns is a PERFECT Christmas movie and manages to capture the melancholy of the holiday season better than any other film. So while everyone can go on and praise The Dark Kight as being the best Batman sequel, fairly so, how about we give some love and credit to Tim Burton's underrated and underappreciated Batman movie Batman Returns. Griffin (@griffschiller) explains why after all these years Batman Returns is better than you remember, why Batman Returns is a perfect batman movie, why Batman returns is underrated, in this video essay on Batman Returns: The Radical Batman Movie the World Wasn't Ready For in this Batman video essay or Batman analysis!

      Disagree that Batman setting that fire breather on fire was impulsive. If you watch the opening of this scene, there's a shot of people who are on fire and running who were obviously set on fire by the fire breathers. I never noticed it before and it's hard to see and visible for only a second, but if you slow down the playback speed, you can see it. Batman obviously noticed it too, and these fire breathers were basically the equivalent of a bunch of criminals with flamethrowers murdering people in the streets.

    Something I agree is that every 4 main characters in Batman Returns share the same qualities: these are people who embraced a dark side on their own (different reasons of course) but at the end the confrontation feels so satisfactory because everyone of them face their own demons (Max gets punished, the Penguin dies on a humiliating defeat, Catwoman can’t accept a “happy” ending cause she knows she doesn’t deserve it, and Batman learns how to not become the cold vigilante he was since the beginning of the movie)

    • @SeasideDetective2
      @SeasideDetective2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So only Batman gets a happy ending. I wish BATMAN RETURNS had ended the way THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK had, with a tragic cliffhanger that would be resolved in the third film. Channel Awesome's "FanScription" rewrote the film in this style and did pretty well with it. Best of all, they were able to bring back Harvey Dent (Billy Dee Williams).

    For most of my life, I was kind of embarrassed that I liked this movie more than Batman 89 since people saw the latter as the superior movie. But now I kind of just embrace it. As much as I love Batman 89, it’s very simple. You go into it knowing exactly what you’re gonna get. Joker does some funny yet scary stuff and Batman stops him. That’s basically the synopsis. But Batman Returns is super weird, experimental, and unique. There’s really no other story like it. While not comic accurate, Danny DeVito’s Penguin is an interesting new take on the character. He’s almost reminiscent of classic gothic stories like Phantom of the Opera. Catwoman also isn’t the most comic accurate take but again, it’s still a welcome change. To put it simply, this movie feels like you’re watching an original piece of art

    Personally my favourite Batman movie, I've always it as a dark Christmas carole with the villians as the Christmas ghosts. Max Shrek is the wealth and corporate side to Bruce gone wrong, Penguin being the ophran made monstrous and Catwoman whose spirit Bruce is most Kindled with his vengeance and true self put to its extreme which it's already on a thin line. Bruce may be hypercritical when trying to stop Selina killing Max as even after he had his revenge with Joker, the killing never stopped. Tim Burton's Batman maybe darker still then the Ben Affleck's iteration as he doesn't find redemption he's still the same just left cold. Great video man.

    Honestly I think the best thing about Penguin is that he's playing everyone, which really feels like Burton further exploring his 'freaks and misfits vs society/the establishment' ideas by having the freak use Schreck's own ploy and ingratiate himself into society for his purposes; and Batman *knows* what he's doing because to some extent they're on the same path.
    I've seen so many people claim that Oswald's plot with the kids comes out of nowhere, or that he doesn't know who his parents were before looking into the records; he absolutely does, and Batman calls it. Because Oswald - as much as he's been brought up in a sewer - gets *people*; he openly blackmails Schreck but masks his true purposes, and he does the same more subtly with Gotham overall. He uses their sympathy to basically contribute to the plot to kill their own kids. It's really great character stuff.

    I was between 5 or 6 years old when this film was released. I see some threads that play into later Batman films(such as the "Die a Hero" speech from TDK and the jaded Batman from BvS). So much subtext exists that I can't help to think that both Nolan and Snyder took inspiration from Burton for their versions of The Dark Knight. As an unapologetic lover of this film, I can't gush enough about this film. From the symbol being used by Bruce being essentialy the version as used by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for the Animated series. To the stellar performances of the 3 villains, Michelle being considered 30 years later as the quintessential cinematic Catwoman, Danny DeVito being unrecognizable as Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot and Christopher F**KIN Walken. To the oft neglected holiday melancholy. To the superbly gothic score by Danny Elfman. Great vid as always Film

    Yeah when I was a kid I really loved watching Tim Burtons Batman films for being dark and awesome and I still enjoy them even though some people in my family find them sometimes Comicy (which Im like yeah it looks like a comic but it definitely has a Change of pace of what comic movies look like in tone it isn't like Batman 1960s its more a Batman anytime )

    If you truly love Batman, you can appreciate that this is the ultimate Batman movie. He wrestles with some of his greatest conflicts like his freakish affect on his universe, unintended inspiration and the reflection of himself in Selina’s turmoil. This further extends into why Batman Forever, though much more cheesy, is also an excellent Batman film dealing with the final resolution of this conflict with Robin.

    I've always found the charge that this movie is "too dark" and "nihilistic" funny when really critics of this film are simply incapable of seeing past what are really merely superficial aesthetic idiosyncrasies and subtle nuances they don't like. Too bad because they don't know what they're missing.
    Oh and Siouxsie Sioux's "Face to Face" is awesome.

    I actually loved this film over the original. The first one, I like, but I went into it thinking we were getting an origin story on Bruce as opposed to the mystery of understanding who Batman is in the eyes of an outsider. Still a great movie, but I went into Returns more aware of want to expect as it’s a direct sequel. Both Burton films are incredible and I’m glad to Keaton return in the Flash.

      Thanks dude! Yeah I almost feel like the toxicity of it is kind of the point in a lot of ways. It’s a pretty off putting movie, but purposefully so and effectively so. The character work doesn’t get enough credit in this film, especially Bruce with how little screen time he really has.

    • @Don-ol8ze
      @Don-ol8ze ปีที่แล้ว

      I always saw their relationship more as tragic than toxic - both characters are so broken, which makes them perfect for each other, and the film teases the possibility that they might find some level of healing, only to snatch it away. Just my take, anyway.

  • @ReelSchool

    This is by far your best essay (and that’s really saying something). Maybe its the subject matter I’m connecting with) But you forget one massive important key to this film… screenwriter Daniel Waters. He’s a hit or miss screenwriter, with movies like Heathers in his filmography, and other real bombs, but the one thing Water certainly understands, is bullying. This ties into your melancholy holiday thread, where people feel lonely and perhaps judged during the holidays. That thread that you aptly pointed out, is a part of Batman, Catwoman, and Penguin’s story. You have to give a lot of credit to Waters. He never wrote a better script.

    The Batman 89 comic is awesome in every way. That is the biggest nod to Tim Burton and his Batman universe ever. The fact that Sam Hamm wrote it makes it even better. The artist and the way he drew it and made it accurate to how those actors would have looked in 1995 is flawless. They even made it look like it was shot like a movie. Hell they even edited it like Burton's Batman as far as the way it jumps from scene to scene. This is the most satisfying conclusion of the Burton universe. The closest thing to what his third and final film would have been. So in the beginning when you mentioned Batman 3, we have it but in comic form. I've never been so satisfied in my life. I remember I read an article in third grade about Keaton quitting and Burton not doing his movie and everything going on around that, it was the worst part of third grade lol. Now the wait was worth it.

    Batman 89 is a pretty straight forward action movie and follows the 3 Act "action movie formula" pretty well... That "3 Act Structure" basically is, Act 1: We meet the Hero and the Villain. Act 2: The Villain causes problems and the Hero chases the Villain. Act 3: The Hero catches and/or kills the Villain, The End! ...Every James Bond film, Indiana Jones, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon ect... follows that structure, audiences are accustomed to it, and expect that... The "3 Act Structure" of a Hollywood motion picture is like the "Verse/Chorus/Verse" structure of a Top 40 Pop Song... if you stray away from it? The general public gets, confused, uncomfortable, or bored... The Dark Knight is that, actually The Dark Knight is basically a Dirty Harry remake with the Harvey Dent story woven into it... but Batman Returns is not that at all, so it's a big part of why it's not as popular

    As a kid-teenage I watched Batman 1989 more then as I got older I started to really fall in love with Batman Returns and started to see it as more of Batman Film then the 1989. Batman is a dark character, the city is dark, the rogues are dark and evil. You're not supposed to feel safe in Gotham, so being uncomfortable with the corruption and crime happening in Batman Returns is putting you right into how it feels for someone that lives there and why Batman is such a noble character considering the enviroment and city he's chosen to protect. I also marathon Batman Returns every year and call it a Christmas movie haha.

  • @sleepinggorilla

    I watch it every Christmas. A Christmas Carol story using Batman characters is a great idea. The 3rd act is gold, but it takes a long time to get there. There are a ton of scenes with the talented cast just standing around. I would have liked to see Catwoman and Penguin go after Max Shrek more actively, make it more about Batman trying to save these people from their own hatred.
    But, like George Lucas with the Prequels, and every M.Night Shamylan movie, this is the movie Burton and Keaton WANTED to make. This is their uninterrupted vision, like it or not. I love that.
