Thank you for featuring our mod Jimmy ! It's always fun to see how peoples react to driving this car :) There is a physics update coming in a few weeks, for the Renault (and also for the Nardi Bisiluro). We reworked the rear suspensions and tyres data. It will be easier to throw it in the turns and will suffer less from terminal understeer.
In the 1970s someone took a gas-turbine-powered car to La Man's 24-hour race - when they had a race of champions/historic race someone raced it again - one big issue they found was it was a sitting duck when the yellow flags came out and then went to green - it took them half a lap or even more to get up to speed again
Fun fact: my Great Great Uncle Ozzie was one of the people to retrieve Babs from Pendine Sands years later after it had been buried. My nan told me this and i don't think she quite realised the significance of that car/land speed record/Parry Thomas
Wikipedia says one of the designers of this car died in the 90s. The other one unknown, but assuming he’s no longer with us. Really cool to see their work live on in a way they’d never have imagined.

This is the Etoile Filante ! (pronounciation guide : hay-twahl fee-lante) First time I see it in any simulation, always loved this car. By the way, the gas turbine in it (Turbomeca Turmo) was also used in the Puma helicopter, then in the TGV001 train prototype (before the TGV went electric), as well as several turbotrains that went into service.
How the hell did they boost this engine from 270hp in the little Renault to 1500hp in the Puma and Frelon.

@@kilianortmann9979 the one in the Etoile Filante was the first version (Turmo I) with very early technology, it was then improved with a twin-stage and higher pressure ratio for the Turmo II (560kw) in the 60s, and the Puma has two Turmo IIIs at 1150kw each. It was then adapted for turbotrains.
So I actually know the guy in the "no steering wheel" bit at the beginning. His name is Jeff Diehl and he's a nitro funny car driver. Really chill dude and mainly only does west coast NHRA races with a few mid-west events if he can. Insane how he was able to keep the car controlled in that clip.
Speaking about turbines, you should definitely try the Howmet TX, the first Turbine powered CanAm car, that was a true monster. Unfortunately, due to very costing development and reliability issues, the project got buried, but I guarantee it's worth a try.

Vintage AC which is a quite well sized racing league actually did a race with those machines on the old 1966 spa which was very weird but extremely fun.
I knew as soon as he passed the bridge on the second lap and kept it pegged that he was going to rocket into the wall. Back when I played Project Cars 2 and drove the turbine indy car, you had to pretty much go on the brakes right around the crest and the bridge, and it could still be uncomfortably close.
There were way more turbine-powered race cars than one might expect, like the Lotus 56, STP-Paxton Turbocar, and one that Shelby made which never raced.
@@callummclachlan4771 they don't really race turboprops in air racing that I know of, other than in the Sport class and point-to-point races. Most of the race planes you think of - pylon racers and the Red Bull aerobatic time trial thingy I don't know whether or not they do anymore - use piston engines, while there IS a pure jet (no propeller) class in what was once the Reno Air Races. There was the Lotus 56, a turbine powered race car, so if there's a mod for that, well could see how that goes. Granted given its from the 60s not sure how different it would be. Also I have how the car on cornering is like "Hit the apex? But the apex never did anything to me".

Land speed record cars aren't really cars, they're planes that have been convinced to stay on the ground. For some reason, I would really like to see this car engineer's reaction to this video.
If you wanted to drive something that was made for racing, take the Lotus Type 56 for a drive. Turbine powered, 4wd indycar that almost won the 500 on 2 different years before turbines were banned as well as runing in modified form in the 1971 F1 season with a best of 8th at Monza. There's also a handful of turbine powered sports racers including one of the first garage 57 cars in the Rover-BRM prototype from the 60s in the attempt to win a fuel efficiency cup. That is of course if either of those cars have mods for AC
I think the modders have made a mistake. Beeing a turboshaft, the turbine rpm are directly related to the speed of the car. So it wouldnt be possible to spool the engine in corners. 35k rpm is max, but the rpm during its 300kph record run was "only" 28k rpm. So it would have to go way above 300kph to ever hit 35k rpm.
I assume this was suggested before but I think it would be really cool to see Jimmy trying out the Chaparral 2J around the Nordschleife if he can find a mod for it
Doesn't look like anyone's mentioned the Howmet TX or the Rover BRM Gas Turbine cars. No mods for them as I can see but they're worth a look just to hear them run at Classic Lemans and the like!
It would be cool if you added the times the leader board you had for your lap time challenges. It would be nice to see what the Turbine car was equal too.
It still boggles my mind how long it took for the greatest minds in racing just couldnt come up with improving suspension and wheels and brakes. Saftey even. But they sure loved straight 8 plane motors with single or twin superchargers that couldnt put the power down at all or stop at all
Interesting that they chose a gas turbine with a power turbine to drive the wheels. Rather than just use jet thrust (as later land speed record cars did). It probably makes it a bit more drivable on a track.
