  • In this series, Firm Foundations, we examine history and doctrine pertaining to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We examine the LDS (Mormon) faith and culture in order to separate the facts from the fiction in LDS history and doctrine.
While the creators of the show are members of the LDS church, this show is not affiliated with or endorsed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We strive to be independent critics, learning about and explaining Mormon culture and history, and sometimes calling for changes to ideas and assumptions we hold as members when the evidence doesn’t back up our long-held myths or ideas about the church, it’s policies, or it’s leaders.
Emma Smith is one of the most important and stalwart members of the early church. How was she involved in the restoration? Did she endure to the end? What is Emma’s story? We answer all these questions and more in this episode.
In every video we carefully craft the scripts and fact-check our stories. We examine facts, scriptures, doctrinal sources, historical documents, modern surveys, psychology, and scientific data. Hannah, as the writer and researcher, interprets this information and crafts it into a factually accurate, but interesting and dynamic episode. It is important to our mission that we not sugar coat or ignore facts, and that we include all pertinent information and use empathy when examining individuals’ choices. We want to empower you to do the same. We always include links to our sources below each video, so that viewers can dig deeper into the source material, ask questions, and find the truth. Emma also cared for Joseph's elderly mother who was one of Emma's greatest fans. I think Lucy's needs must have been part of her decision about not traveling west.

On my mission 16 years ago I went to a fireside with Joseph's first descendant to hold the Melchizedek priesthood. It was a neat presentation on family history. But he mentioned that all his life the first presidency had kept an eye on him, and that a few years prior they told him it was time to start traveling around giving these fireside about his family, family history in general, and "defending Emma's good name."

Emma Smith is one of the strongest and most valiant woman that I have read about. She suffered and gave so much. The Plural marriage must have been so hurtful to her. From what I understand, Joseph didn't practice plural marriage like the saints later did--living with all wives and having kids with them. But he was sealed to a lot of women. I would have been crushed by half the things she endured. That poor woman never had a moments peace. God bless you Emma. You inspire me.

If you truly believe she was valiant and faithful, then why not just believe her that she never saw the supposed revelation on plural marriage, never threw it in the fire, and that Joseph never married any other women but her? Both her and Joseph denied any involvement with polygamy to their deaths.

Thankyou so much for your insights and presentation on Emma. If l had to pass through a fraction of the trials and hardships she had to pass through l am sure it would have crushed me. I would have to say the same about Joseph as well. She may not have got everything right but who does ? I certainly don't. Let him who is without sin cast the first stone said the Saviour. Yes, I agree. I'm sure there were several reasons for Emma's disaffection.
Another logical item was the fact that Joseph LIED to her about his polygamous trysts---the FIRST THING she insisted on eliminating from her new RLDS church theology....polygamy.
She also seemed to blame Brigham for LDS polygamy rather than her husband.
It's too bad that Emma didn't become the First prophetess of the Restoration instead of Joseph.

A rather generous representation of Emma who indeed supported the Lord and His Prophet Joseph during the restoration. However, there are many accounts in the scriptures of even sons or prophets who chose at the end not to follow the Lord, even after the miracles in their life and the great example of the family member. If Emma understood revelation that made possible the translation of the Book of Mormon, the restoration of the priesthood, and restoration of the church; How is it possible she supported the starting of a "new" church and pushing her son as a Prophets? I don't doubt her testimony, but something may have gone wrong after Joseph's death. God's judgment is His and only His. It is for us who are still on this side of the veil to avoid "sugar-coating" the mistakes and remember no matter how wonderful we may have done at some point in our lives, the commandment "enduring to the end" is an eternal principle. We all loved the Father in the preexistence but at the end of that stage in our eternity, when war broke up, one-third did not endure to the end, into this mortal stage, the same will happen into our next stage. To me, when I think of Emma, my mind thinks on "don't let your guard down, it has happened to the best of us, endure to the end".

Add to that even, the fact that she and her boys (Joe's boys) along with others formed her OWN church, "The Reorganized Church of LDS" (now Community of Christ).

There is a lot left out of this explanation of Emma’s life. You mentioned that the lack of people in Navu was what caused her to be poor for the rest of her life. That is simply not true. It was in large part Brigham Young’s fault for taking most of the assets and leaving her with all of the church debts. It wasn’t paid off until she was almost on her deathbed. She is reported as apologizing to her son for having been in poverty, most of his life due to these debts. You also claimed that she did not leave her thoughts on polygamy when that is grossly false. She left at least four interviews or writings about her feelings, as well as the many rebottles during Joseph and Emma’s lifetime.

@Richard SPARKS Money is the corruption in every church. Every religion tries to decipher the old testament and new testament, to try and reveal when God Almighty will appear on this earth. Joseph Smith and his co-conspirators plagiarised the bom from multiple literary sources.

@Richard SPARKS Thank you for asking a question. You will find in your search for truth that a disaffected person will tell you some truths combined with some twisted information. I have dear friends who are Catholic and are good people, but if someone who was anti-Catholic told me Catholics believed in abusing young boys with their priests I would be smart enough to ask my friends who actually follow the faith what their true beliefs are. This video uses some truths and inserts erroneous parts as well and then displays things in a twisted way, (this is too short a venue to address them all). I suggest that if you ever want to know the truth about what members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe you will want to ask some members who follow the faith, rather than someone who is disaffected or anti. And ultimately when you search and learn it will be up to you to seek to know God's will for you through sincere prayer and a desire to know the truth for yourself. God will not lie to you and He is the ultimate person to help you find the truth. Best regards and good luck in your search. :)

I believe in your earnestness but much of what is used to support Joseph as a polygamist is forged or interpreted as a support of polygamy. I am not personally offended by polygamy but I have come to this truth with study. D&C132 was penned by Brigham who was a long-term supporter of the spiritual wifery movement, as you mentioned. This movement went beyond polygamy and into various other perversions between people who were not married. Do not take my word for this but do the research. Joseph wasn't perfect, he transgressed again her as mentioned in D&C. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were also called by God yet sinned greatly. Joseph did that same thing to Emma. Joseph was a prophet but made some serious mistakes.
One thing I don't understand though, is the Abrahamic covenant, the sacrifice? He never had to sacrifice his son, he was spared at the last minute thus never having to make that sacrifice. Why tell Emma to make the Abrahamic covenant when Abraham never made the sacrifice? Don Badly just did a great video on Joseph screw up on ward radio. Super cool 😎. God works with the imperfect

There is a growing movement in the Church that is unearthing an old narrative: Joseph Never lived Polygamy. It states that D&C 132 was derived by Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball, William Clayton and others who were "desiring many wives and concubines" to formulate a 'revelation' justifying their designs. It is coming out in a careful study of the Joseph Smith Papers. Joseph, Emma and Hyrum ALL FOUGHT polygamy until their dying breath. This relatively new narrative makes sense and exonerates Joseph Smith of any involvement in the practice of PM and clearly demonstrates He was vehemently against it. D&C 132 has too many lies and false doctrine to take it at face value anymore.

Emma three times after Joseph's death said that he had no other wives but her. It is up to each of us to get to the real truth. Do your own research. Joseph was not a hypocrite. Humans evolved 'tools' to fend off these threats, with us from our time as hunter gatherers; two of which are named cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias. Joseph Smith became a desperate charlatan when his family suffered economic devastation from "The Winter Without a Summer", as a result of the Eruption of Tambora April 5, 1815 which cooled the northern hemisphere and caused crop failures and famine around the globe. Joseph eventually admitted his deceptions to Emma's father but he failed to keep his promise to stop. So what if the affidavits in the Expositor clearly describe all the troubling parts we don't like about D&C 132 that Hyrum presented to the Nauvoo council. Who cares if hundreds of people saw or heard the document that came to be 132 prior to 1847 when it was recopied and handed over to Brigham. Who cares that the wording of 132 was Joseph's and not Brigham's and that Brigham was not capable of writing it. It magically appeared from Brigham's desk in 1852!!!
Who cares if hundreds of people testified of Joseph initiating polygamy. They are ALL liars. And Joseph, Hyrum, and Emma were too infallible to lie.
    Other extreme:
Who cares about Jacob 2 and King Noah and his priests being described as wicked for having multiple wives. In Joseph's day, God was a changin. And sure "these things" in Jacob 2:30 were described as "the abominations of polygamy" elsewhere in Jacob 2, but if we tweaked things to make "these things" mean Jacob's entire discourse (that was preserved for OUR day) we have a loophole to steal wives (and call it seal wives) and kick the excess men out of Utah. And it's not adultery so long as we "multiple and replenish the earth."
I think the reason the LDS and Reorganized Church remained at odds over this issue for so long is because neither side can drop their deep felt idea that Joseph was too infallible to write a Revelation that contained his own lustful desires.
So the LDS church claims we should accept 132 as scripture even though Joseph nor the body of the Church ever voted it to be.
And the Reorganized Church went into denial mode and pretended someone less capable of writing it (like Brigham Young) wrote it.
The challenge with 132 is that the nonpolygamy parts are powerful and true. So how do you throw the bathwater out without throwing out to baby?
I am convinced that the Lord was displeased with Joseph for introducing these false concepts the same way he was displeased with Moses for overstepping. Resulting in handing over the task to Joshua and Brigham Young taking the Israelites into Salt Lake Valley/Israel (both desert areas with Lake Utah/Sea of Galilee emptying into Jordan River towards Salt Lake/Dead Sea.)
I think the Salt Lake Temple not being completed until after the Saints formally abandoned polygamy, and it taking 40 years to build was similar to the Saints roaming 40 years in the wilderness because of their sexual sins.
Sexual sin is massively common even amongst God's people.
To think Joseph could not have been tempted into sexual sin by using his revelatory powers to call adultery "plural Celestial Marriage" would mean God denied him his agency.
I believe God removed him for this reason. And God prevented him from having offspring so that he could give a glimmer of hope to the Joseph practiced polygamy deniers.
Who I sympathize with as Jacob 2 (and the JST) make it clear Solomon and David's polygamy was an abomination. D&C 132 falsely negates this.
The scriptures make it clear the sins of the parents are transferred to the the children unto the 3rd or 4th generations.
Joseph's descendants are all outside the covenant. And only a few have accepted the gospel in the 3rd and 4th generations.
This is why I accept William Mark's testimony as the middle and correct positon:
True, Joseph promoted it. True, he admitted that it was a mistake and curse.
I didn't say he started it. Because new evidence shows many of his followers were involved in it parallel to him. It's possible polygamists like William Clayton pressured Joseph to create 132 to satisfy their lists.

So no mention of the accusation that Emma tried twice to poison her husband? Or of the fact that the main reason for her desire to not join Brigham Young was their disagreement over polygamy? I mean she spent the rest of her life publicly denying Joseph Smith ever had multiple wives so that should be an indicator as to what she thought about this policy.

You may want to do some more research about Emma smith before you publish things as facts! Joseph smith never had any more wives than Emma! She testified so in interview after interview after Joseph’s death. There is a book series entitled Joseph fought polygamy that I would recommend. It is a different story than the one the church historically teaches but I know it to be true. Joseph was a prophet of God and was not unfaithful to Emma in any way.

I'm pretty sure Joseph and Emma have a few things to work through, but I'm sure some context matters here. There was no social welfare safety net in their day, so Emma may not have had a lot of choice in re-marrying. It may have been an economic necessity.
Having said that, she's done a few things that don't look too good to us these days...
