  • APOLOGIES FOR THE BELL! I know it gets tedious! Lesson learned!
    In this video, we going to conduct an operating session on my shelf layout, The Grunge. The original video showed essentially the entire session, including all the moves, at prototypical speeds, but that's not everyone's cup of tea. So this video cuts a lot of that out to focus on the action. (Original video here: • Small Layout Operating... )
    For many of my viewers, prototypical operations is the goal of building a layout. I my first ops video for The Grunge, I showed that you don't need to have a completed layout to have a satisfying op session. Since that last operations video, there's been some additional work on the Grunge layout, including the construction of the Tenement house, the addition of the Smith Sign Company building, and the installation of some scenery. So let's have some fun while showing off the new additions.

    Layout looks super clean and trains run well at such slow speeds. Like your commercial structures. groundcover looks good. I enjoyed watching. Keep the good vids coming! Brian

    even a small layout has a lot of operational possibilities.

      Exactly! Which is why I don't know why so many people wait and wait and wait until they have the space, or the time, or the money for their "dream layout." Actually, yes I do. 😉

    Smooth slow speed operation. Can't wait to see those structures all 'grunged' up.

      Yep. More grime is coming. Especially for the tenement and the sign shop.

    cute little layout, neat operation! I think this is the first model railroad operation video i have watched, it's interesting enough so ill check out some more!
    I used to be a truck driver and have done some "take that trailer off the dock and put your trailer back on that same dock" operations, they suck so I'm just imagining having to do this sort of delivery in a real locomotive, well can't be any worse at least.
    one could make a puzzle game out of this sort of work! I'm sure this yard would make players say "oh god why?" XD
    (if the road still doesn't have a name how about "Grunge" Street or Road or some other suffix.)

      As with most things railroad, there’s a rule for that! I got curious and dug out my official 1984 Chessie System Operating Rules, and indeed, Rule 30 says “The engine bell must be sounded…except after momentary stops in continuous switching movements” and Rule 32 says “The excessive use of either the engine horn or bell is prohibited”. Great video, and well-designed switching area.

    Well done on the layout!
    By the way, you could name your road 'Jaybird Street' (inspired by the song, Rockin' Robin).
    Also, what type of cans does your factory produce?

    • @ThePixelDepotLLC
      @ThePixelDepotLLC  ปีที่แล้ว

      You know, I never thought that much about it, but always assumed in my head they were steel cans used for vegetables or the like.

    Nicely done -- a LOT of switching action adroitly executed in a very limited space!
    Umm... Caton Avenue?

    I have been inspired by your layout and videos along with the 59th and rust to make a version for myself. This will be my first layout. Is there a place that lists the track plan with dimensions and turn outs used?

    • @ThePixelDepotLLC
      @ThePixelDepotLLC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad to hear it! The track plan can be found at www.chessiemctd.com/the-grunge-track-plan/. I used all Code 100 small radius (#5) Peco turnouts.

    Nice video! Just curious, why is your Patreon level called the GP38-2? Chessie never rostered any GP38-2s. CSX got all theirs from the Seaboard side of the merger.

    • @ThePixelDepotLLC
      @ThePixelDepotLLC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jeff, long time no talk! It's a fair question. You'll note that, even though Chessie is definitely my primary road, the Patreon images that accompany the tiers are Conrail locomotives, and the GP38-2 was definitely a quintessential Conrail loco for me. Also, when I decided to name them, I had the GP15-1 tier and the SD40-2 tier, so it seem off, somehow, to have the middle tier not be the dash 2. Hope that makes sense!

    What do think about DPM structures...?? I noticed you have one on the grunge.

    • @ThePixelDepotLLC
      @ThePixelDepotLLC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really like the full building kits. That one is Made from the “Carol’s Corner Cafe” kit. Easy to build, good detail. I’m actually building a clone for the main layout. And possibly another to sell.
      The modulars, however are tougher. I’ve used them but ot’s difficult to get all the sections completely even, completely straight and without gaps, especially for a larger structure (stay tuned!). Not that I wouldn’t ever use them, but you have to know what you’re getting into.
