I think that you are a bit tough on yourself. I really liked the splatter you put on the ends of the covered hopper. And the others you liked better are great also. I've seen both dirty after effects. Don't worry about it.
I made a cardboard mast with two slits spaced the same as the wheels. I hold it about a quarter inch from the car. Then with a tooth brush i spray the oil wash though the mask to get the wheel spray. I works not only for all cars? But in n scale too. You may need to make s few masks to get what you might find to your liking.
I used to use pan pastels but have switched to pigments what I do is dampen the area with AB thinner and use a fan brush or a stippling brush to give the car some texture. Like the way your car turned out. Your oil washes looked very cool.
You suggested the pigments to me in a previous comment, and I'll probably try them out at some point. At the moment, I've got a ton of Pan Pastel colors, and they work so well for me, I've been hesitant to change.
Great stuff. I've just invested in a covered hopper as a weathering project. I normally just use enamel paints but I've bought some pastel pencils and India ink so will have a go with some of your techniques.
I really enjoyed your weathering techniques the car came out looking really great. I have a question on your Indian ink . Do you use of alcohol based burn umber. Would you be able to tell me where I could pick some of this up at. Thanks Roy
I love your weather and technique I just had one serious question... they are three points oxidation is sun beatin weathered in time..but when metal is scratched it starts to automatically starts it's progress to light rust then the dark rust that i call full bloom rust.. you put light rust over full bloom rust..why this way??

I heard you can get the wheel kick-up using a toothbrush with higher outside bristles.

Sorry I was not making light of the use of pan pastels. I just like the results of pigments.

Have you ever tried bounce weathering? Great for texture dust and grime picked up from the car moving.
Vallejo have oil and grease in their environment series as well.
I'll have to look for those. I've always used "oily black" from Polly Scale, but we all know that's not around anymore.Could be a great replacement.
