I've been wanting to do this for ages! Right after I filmed the video about my bass drum technique (this one: bit.ly/JHXaFd) I decided to use the already set-up gear to record this quick little kick/snare/hat jam. Tons of guys have done this, and it's so SO much fun to break everything down to the basics and see what you can come up with.
So, here is my first kick/snare/hat video. Thanks for watching!
~
Sometimes even the most simple setups can inspire so much creativity. This can definitely be seen here. Big kits are great, but I love seeing people do awesome stuff on a three piece. Great playing. ;)
*2 piece 🙂
that kick sounds huge!
Simen Andreas Knudsen and ugly with the acoustic snare. Sounds like a Simmons electronic kick. Sorry!
He didnt start out with those insane quality he has right now. He is a good drummer, a sympathetic guy and had some luck in the way his life is progressing.
Music is an art. Not a competition. Nobody is the same. Create your own way and it may live forever among mankind. Petro
Great point why copy when you can create your own style as long as you have the fundamentals
Shut up petro
@@colin5115 why
For people in to the bass, snare, hat style of drumming, checkout drummers like Matt Halpern. I'm not dissing Cobus at all, that guy could probably kill me in a battle. But Matt's playing this kind of stuff for years
I love Matt Halpern, his limb independence is impossible to match..... and all with one tom. :D
thanks for hooking that up -- man's an animal
What about Tama soul toul???
thank you man, been looking for someone as I have a small kit.
He loves what he does and he passes his knowledge onto others. What more could you ask from a fellow drummer?
When people say he is over-rated, they aren't comparing themselves to him. They are comparing some of the other amazing talent on youtube, which isn't getting enough attention.
All I will say is Mike Johnston has 50k subs, and has been making amazing videos since 2006. He is the most humble guy ever, and his drumming/tutorials are freaking mind blowing.
All due respect to Cobus though, I have been a fan of him since the beginning, and he is a great guy.
never give this man some tom toms!
I'd like to see him do a whole cover series like this.
I completely agree
I think one of the major reasons why cobus has more attention than his current skill level would suggest is because he has gained popularity by being so awesome to his fans, with the cobus method, constantly telling his fans whats going on, and forming a band with some fans...
I wish people would realize that just because he doesn't fit into their skill-to-popularity ratio doesn't mean that he's over rated, it means that he's doing more than just playing
The bass drum technique at 0:19 was awesome!
Slide. He has a video on it
The realest drumming I've ever seen from Cobus. Simplicity
This kid actually has a great feel. His chops aren't the smoothest but he definitely had groove.
Chops have a ceiling, creativity doesn’t
Dam. Cobus was born to play drums. In his 1st year he was killin it!
Some people would sell their soul for playing guitar, I would sell my soul to play drums like this guy.
Practice. It's not magic.
@@popeyesailor9571 Years and years I can imagine. Would be worth it though.
Don’t sell your soul, just practice instead lol. I’m 36 and spent the vast majority of my life just dicking around with drumsticks on my kit or in my bed or on the couch. If I’m in my car I’m hitting the steering wheel and working my left foot kicks… it all adds up over the years and you will shred on drums if you put the time in to build chops.
@@grizzlywhisker Haha yeah, I’ve definitely grown a rythem over the years playing on my steering wheel lol. Just need to pull the trigger on a small drum set.
@@gettsfilms get a Tama ‘Rockstar’ kit or something. They make quality kits that sound good and are not super expensive. You could probably find a used one for cheap, throw some new heads on it and it will sound badass.
I'm a guitar guy and never pay much attention to drums, but I gotta recognize quality when I see it. Cobus is a great artist, drummer and percussionist, no doubts about it.
So many hip-hop breakbeats, I might even sample this video xD
The epiphany of drumming, you do it well cobus. LIVE LONG!
A while back I filmed a bass drum technique video, and thought about just recording a few stand-alone grooves as well. I was tired so it was never going to be incredibly coherent, just wanted to film a quick vid for some feedback, I LOVE feedback. That said, your comment is so condescending that it makes it difficult to take you seriously, even though I would have loved to. If you have some constructive criticism, please throw it my way! Who should I listen to? Which exercises can you recommend?
Cobus watch nate smith
watch Coubus in 2020
I love Watching and hearing you play Mr. Cobus. You inspire and make my day's. Here is a big thank you. May God bless you in everything you do.
CHEATER!!!!! youre using sticks!!!!!!
Gustavo Fermin ?
Timelapse Go dumb
And double base pedals
@@peelp it was a sarcasm joke, you moron
First of all, I don't want to speak from a comment I made 5 years ago. I do not care anymore. Secondly, I don't want to talk to someone who uses more than one comment because it doesn't know how to express both ideas in a single paragraph and has the brilliant idea of making 2 comments. and thirdly www.amazon.es/Official-Dictionary-Sarcasm-Lexicon-Smarter/dp/1402769520.
that was my last message...
moron
You and Jimmy Rainsford, definitely part of the most innovative drummers I have ever seen and heard!
1:59 - 2:14 OMFG !
I like this a lot. Going from a huge drum kit to just kick, snare, hats, and a couple of crashes myself I can appreciate getting back to basics.
Those are pieces of Jared's kit right? I'd recognise that beauty anywhere. Sounds unbelievable too, would love to get behind that thing, I'd have to be dragged off it though for my own safety since I would get dehydrated and die :)
+Drummer JamTracks jared has no DWs
+Juraj Okasa He has DWs mate, he is in lots of videos with them, and he even says "no you can't buy my kit." because lots of people asked him.
lmao shut up
he might not be getting a lot of attention but he is getting the attention he deserves. he plays for fun at to entertain people. the fans he has are what he wants, we are the one who with watch every video over and over and over until we cant watch them anymore. I'd say he is getting the perfect attention. :) rock on Cobus
Kick. Snare. Hat. Rim.
Rim of what?
Rim of snare ;-)

I just started my adventure with drums. I really like how you can literally "extract" magic from the simplest drum set!
Needs more cowbell.
agreed
willyboy903 the point with the video is to only play kick, snare and hi-hat
@@TheTomicTuberFilms joke
Dude he has perfect time. He plays a lot of off-beat stuff like i do, its more challenging and can be very fun to play, hes a veryyyy good drummer, and an excellent guy to learn from, diggin the beats Cobus!
Now that's what I call a real drummer.
Cobus is just playing, what he feels in side, most drummers have groove's, set out the way they like it. There is nothing wrong with playing a drum groove, how you whant it too be, it's up two you on how it sounds, it's alound two be crative. Cobus play's by ear and so do i, and im not all that falsh, but what cobus is doing is pretty dam hard. Go for it Cobus your great.
Not quite my tempo.
Was he rushing or was he dragging?
Donnie Moretti Who cares just trow him a chair ;)
EedeePvP if u deliberately sabotage my band
FENGGU LI Where is he looking at... There is no fucking Mars bar down there
Was the movie good?
You on the bass, snare and hi-hat cymbals has been the most enjoyable and entertaining drum playing I've seen you do. It showed how creative and wonderful you are at playing drums. That's why I have a small drum set. It makes me a much more creative percussionist. Do another one! E.E.
it may look weird, but I think if he wears a gopro on his head, it'll look cool seeing drumming from his point of view...... :D
You are a very good presentator,I like watching your videos. When I bought my drum set,I forgot about my guitar as an instrument to express myself,I am totally into drumming, awesome instrument.
2:30 HAS ANYBODY ELSE NOTICED THIS
yeah , when you hit with the toe , you hit harder and when you hit with the heel , it's softer
Trevor Zeiner Yh I saw his tongue
Trevor Zeiner i do the same thing when i drum XD
I was talking about his foot
Trevor Zeiner xD, I'm a drummer myself but I don't do that xD
Cobus, I gotta say you never cease to impress me. You are excellent. Great stuff. Keep it up man!
Hey folks, do you think it is possible for a beginner to start with these 3 parts only? I mean getting nice hats, a cool snare and bassdrum and then slowly building the rest of your drum kit with quality parts instead of buying one cheap beginner set! Please help me! :D
err i wouldn't recommend it i would say start with a nice low budget kit and then start improving your set, there is no point in playing drums at first if you don't have a solid kit
Highly debatable topic.. A lot of people say to get a full size starter kit; personally I would say to begin with just a kick snare and hats and learn to GROOVE. The amount of beginners that have been playing for 3 years that still can't groove is insane.. All the fun stuff; speed and agility comes in time, but you have to groove as a drummer or you won't have anything going for you..
I'd say kick snare and hats are the meat and potatoes of any drummers kit, everything else is just used to accent (for the most part), get good on them first!=, I'd say go for it!
James Cook I started with Piano for now, but thanks for the great answers :D
***** Thanks for the advice :D
You can give this guy anything even in minimal resources and he can make it sound, look and feel fucking awesome.
Does anybody know how did he make double pedal sound with single kick??
He's using what's called the slide technique.
I thought I saw a double-bass pedal. Some people use the side-to side slide. I use the slide up technique.
It's called slide technique but you could also use heel-toe they have a tutorial on both of these on drumeo ;D
+Whidhi GIlang Satria
He is using slide technique with double pedals, see 1:41
Agreed. It also depends on what you call the "best". Some people consider timing, and accuracy, others emotion, or originality. Everyone likes a different drummer for a different reason. Some are fast, some are smooth. Just like music genres, Its all your own taste, doesnt mean one is better than the other, and if one gets more attention, that is for many reasons too! Sometimes luck! Just enjoy the beats, the rhythm, and relax all!
jesus christ this is fucking awesome
what are you talking about? the groove is there, he's not gonna be grooving on a beat for like 5 minutes is he? he's proving a point, showing how much you can do with just hats, snare, and bass drum !
How long has he been playing? This is great.
+Pinguenella since 2008
+Jan Flöer Calm down m8. WRONG, WRONG. So negative.
nice man
Around 2004-2005 probably.
16 years
keep drumming Homeboy. you inspire us all.
there's so much benny greb in there...
Daaaaaayumm the last beat wass SSSSSSSEEEECKK!! Awesome man, you've been an inspiration! Thanx!
Cobus just did a Jojo Mayer. lol
hahahahahaha wat
I dont see why people have to criticise Cobus? He's a good drummer. I wouldn't consider him as the best in the world, but at the end of the day drumming isn't a competition its about having fun, and clearly he is having fun.
are you using double pedal or are you just skilled
Brian Parker he's using double peddle but he is also very skilled he does fucking double strokes with his feet like what that's impossible
Matthew well I know what I'm trying tomorrow
thats the slide technique
up until 1:40 I don't think he touched the second one because it was pretty normal stuff (with the bass at least) but after that he switches to double
I love this dudes footwork
Snick, hare, Kat! Nicely done.
AHHH WHY IS HE HOLDING THE STICKS LIKE THAT
he's hitting the snare with the back of the stick
Because he know what the fuck he’s doing
People seem to hate cobus just cuz hes more famous. But i just like watching any talented drummer.
thank god for .5 speed
as far as im concerned, you make by FAR the best drum covers on youtube. but you leave a lot to be desired when it comes to solos and musicality
So many different time sigs! Hell yeah bro
I am an actual drummer. My point is , I really dont care ( dont think many others do either) about what negative comments you guys have about this kids talent. This Cobus guy has has alot of heart and is shows by his success . Lets not comapre apples to pears and learn to accept that every drummer is different . This guy is not only a great drummer but also has great marketing skills.
Epic. I always come back to watch this.
Right on! I am glad to see another drummer who can do diddles between foot and hand and knows how to tune a snare. now try doing swiss triplets with hand and foot. that is a tough one.
Oh my gosh! It's actually you! I've always wanted to talk directly to you but I didn't know you responded right to people. I just wanted to say that you're awesome and I love what you do! I've been watching your videos for a long time now and I hope you keep making them. Cheers and stay awesome!
It’s been 9 years
I also agree that he overplays a lot of the time, but that's just because he does it for fun more than anything else, and his groove isn't entirely tight for the same reason, and it makes him really likeable, I love that he's pretty much just messing about to songs in his videos.
But I think the main reason I and many others (probably) respect him is cause he worked his ass off to do his hobby for a living; he didn't get famous at all til he'd flooded youtube with probably a few hundred covers
Just a Single High Hat,a Bass Drum & Snare Drum can Dig your heart out & your soul Dancing on your head.
Whatever sounds good to the ears is bless.
I must be missing something with these "overrated" comments. It requires seas of creativity to make just the hat, snare, and bass sound this good. His technique is flawless far as I can tell
Even justa snare, highhat and kick and your awesomeness is ozzzing!!
dude that double kick was intense.
Good to see a drummer with double kick refrain from using double kick when it's not always required. So many times I've played with drummers in sessions where all they what to do is double kick. Even in a soul outfit lol
That hi-hat sound AWESOME
If I could like this a thousand times I would.
That Hi hat sounds brilliant
Muy bueno!, es increible como tocas Cobus! Un gran ejemplo a seguir, la verdad lo haces perecer tan sencillo... tenes una técnica increible, velocidad... lo tenes todo... sos un maestro!!
You've got to be kidding me. Neil PEart is one of the greatest drummers. Great use of dynamics, rudiments, heart and feeling in his playing, movements, and he makes his drums speak. They sing the songs. He is an excellent time keeper, improviser, and percussionist. He is one of the top drummers of today.
Madness! GREAT madness!
Dude kills it every time..
Amazing drummer
Страшен и ползва само snare, bass,hi hat миисля да направя същото и да ги мастерирам и след това да допълвам други към сета
Those hats 😍
this cobus has a good attitude thats why he is awesome
What's all the fuss about who's overrated? This kid's a great drummer, with crazy, off-the-hook beats and chops. Period.
Did anyone else notice how the wall slightly resembles a piano? No? Oh well...excellent playing Cobus!! Keep up the good work!!
Like the click and snare combinations. Not seen that before!!
i think i watched more thn 10 times and im not tired of watching him play the drums .. :)
I thought this was a couple months old. No, 12 YEARS! Crazy.
That bass drum is amazing
The double stroke rolls on the kick are clean!
This is the only playing of Cobus' that I actually enjoy to any extent
Awesome Cobus, thx for inspiring us!
SimplySnare needs to see this.
I can't believe the amount of negativity in these comments, cobus just showed us creativity and skill using the 3 basic components of a drum kit. this shit was awesome.
Get off your high horses and acknowledge that this guy is a legend himself.
Snare sounds so dope
He was in a full band in South Africa. If you scroll back through his videos he even posted some of their songs and the drum tracks he wrote for them. Sounded pretty good.
Its good to see that Gerald Hayward has made such a positive influence (on the first part )............sounds great man!!!!!!!
Some people critics are bad but the only thing I know is that he's better than me. Cobus came from the bottom, make a name for himself with hard work and I really admire that.
Anyone that says hes over rated, please put up your video so we can see how wonderful you are.....thank ya!
You see a lot amazing technical drummers on TH-cam but I don't think I've ever seen anyone who could groove like that.
Never in my life could I think of doing that with just a hi hate, snare and bass
Simply the best proficiat
This is a good Drummer, i just don't wanna imagine what he would do to a full set.
He's not even trying. He is so good!
Hes good what are guys talking about.. Drums are about creativity.. And all those beats he made with just that kind of set is pretty freakin creative!!!
