- Middle class housewife Ila is trying once again to add some spice to her marriage, this time through her cooking. She desperately hopes that this new recipe will finally arouse some kind of reaction from her neglectful husband. She prepares a special lunchbox to be delivered to him at work, but, unbeknownst to her, it is mistakenly delivered to another office worker, Saajan, a lonely man on the verge of retirement. Curious about the lack of reaction from her husband, Ila puts a little note in the following day’s lunchbox, in the hopes of getting to the bottom of the mystery.
This begins a series of lunchbox notes between Saajan and Ila, and the mere comfort of communicating with a stranger anonymously soon evolves into an unexpected friendship. Gradually, their notes become little confessions about their loneliness, memories, regrets, fears, and even small joys. They each discover a new sense of self and find an anchor to hold on to in the big city of Mumbai that so often crushes hopes and dreams. Still strangers physically, Ila and Saajan become lost in a virtual relationship that could jeopardize both their realities.

All i discovered and found are negative things about the movie... Basically i can grasp from even a senseless story my own philosophies. But all my negative thoughts are drifting when said it's actually an award winning film.
→ first off, when she first discovered that her husband's box was changed, she must make sure to reach it to her husband. Ofcourse i know after discovering that her husband was cheating on her later she chose to express her pain in letters to that stranger guy! But instead make it reach to her husband, she chose to put up her personal life to a stranger immaturely!

That last line by Nawaz. It's not in a shopping mall or in a cafe rather in a crowded train and that smile by Mr Khan just at the end of the dialogue. Just wow!

Irfan khan a pure gem . what an incredible actor die so soon. Good is also become cruel in good people but why ! i was so shocked after hearing this news at 29 april at the age of 53 he died God!!!!!!
I discovered him while watching 2 of this films on a plane in 2014.
He then reconciled me with Indian (Bollywood) movies.
Such authentic, versatile, simple and heart-touching performances.
So much to learn from him.
He will inspire new generations of actors to come.

This is a fantastic movie built on a simple story and based upon plausible real life situations. The elegance of this movie is that it provides insight about people and culture they live in through character development while using a simple plot. More movies like this should be made instead of the trash made today. The movies today seem to come from Eastern Asia.
P. S. Because the was nothing good on cable TV, I decided to give movie a shot even though it had a lousy title.

First the unforgettable Robin Williams then the magnificent Alan Rickman. Now sadly, the sublime and handsome Irfan Khan, truly one of the greatest and gifted actors I have ever had the privilege to watch - especially in The Lunchbox and one of my other favourite movies The Namesake (and his last Inferno).
With subtlety and grace, The Namesake is a masterpiece about an immigrant's perspective on American life and the contrast of traditional Indian values vs modern American values. It left an indelible mark as this brought home similarities of my own (Greek) mother and father's new immigrant life, (strangely enough my father and Irfan could've passed as brothers.) I am the eldest daughter, Greek/Australian born, bilingual and from the first time I watched it, this movie struck a deep chord. I only wished my dad had still been alive he would have loved it. He shared my passion for fabulous movies and Greek, Indian and Arabic music.
The Namesake is a profound, beautiful story of love, family, togetherness and heartbreak. If you can watch it, then do. I will cherish this film for a very long time.
