Richard Horvitz is an amazing conversationalist and a story teller! 🙌 hope he does a podcast where he goes indepth about VA industry and tells incredible BTS stories behind animation studios!
As an emerging voice actor myself, hearing voice over discussions from people from three different voice acting timeline dynamics talk about these topics and their different viewpoints is so enlightening. Especially the talk about AI. I've had a former client who I did a promo spot for jump to generative AI due to how cheap and easy it was to steal the work of a deceased promo artist to sell a product they were selling. It's not a good feeling to have a machine chosen over yourself. It comes across as very disengenuous when it is picked up on.
Seeing them all in one episode is so freaking cool! Thank you for bringing these three amazing VAs on board for this episode, and I hope this isn't the last one about this line of work!
It terrifies me as a listener, too. I'm disabled and spend a LOT of time listening to books and nothing makes me more miserable than to listen to a bad narrator/reader/performer. When I click on a short and hear AI, I click out of it because it is so unpleasant to hear. I hope AI goes away! We have voices! We should use them!
What authenticity does a biological machine have over a synthetic machine, in which both are just fundamentally particles obeying the laws of physics, and there is no stance-independent, non-circular, objective prescription for any entity to have any values, or do any duty. Therefore, there's no reason why non-biological entities cannot have authenticity, nor perform at the same, nor vastly superior quality. AGI/ ASI is coming for all careers, and the "arts" is not special. There is no "heart," or "soul" in biological art, as there is no trait true of biologics, if true of hypothetical non-biologics that justifies any special pleading fallacy.
@@archangelarielle262 Because these machines are going into a market that didn't need to be improved. When we switched from horse and carriage to cars we didn't grind up horses into a pulp to power said cars. So why should artists have their work grinded into a pulp to power a lesser product? Machines are too binary and too good at being perfect to replicate the human touch. If biological touch and authenticity didn't matter, we wouldn't be fighting for it at all, hell we'd have snuffed out the human experience centuries ago, if such a thing was needed. And its not.
AI will never replace real voice actor, because it will the replace the human part of voice acting. Yes it will be getting better, but the human part will never be replaced. It's AI will be just be a tool in the toolbox, once gets to that point great quality but never to replicate the human part. Because if everyone in the industry does it, you will everything being the same thing. If someone use an AI to test a character on who they will sound, than contact anyone pull it off even better. So voice acting is not going to be automated because AI will never replace the actual voice actor.
The whole "voice actors get a lot of backlash for replacing a voice actor" the backlash has to be the dumbest thing that "fans" or people can do. It's not the voice actors fault, there are directors, producers, casting directors. yet people are still stupid enough to blame the voice actor, it's sad honestly
I have nothing against replacing other actors in principle, but in a lot of cases it just makes me sad. Like Mako in ATLA or Lance Riddick recently, whenever i hear the voice has changed and i realized the actor has passed, i get a bit meloncholic.
that whole VA replacement bit was a heavy topic within the Persona fandom because they revoiced all the characters for Persona 3 Reload and the hate that they got from that loud vocal minority was astonishing. most of the fandom was excited to see the new spin on these characters and even breathed new life in some of the characters that made the characters feel fresh. that being said I would love to see Sarah in the next Persona game, eh Atlus?
I actually have such HUGE respect over voice actors, them being the reason that can make you feel and connect with a character and their stories. AI can never replicate the feeling that actual voice actors make me feel that goes beyond just entertainment. Just their voices alone can bring comfort to the people who find much comfort frkm the characters they love. Much love to all voice actors and hope you guys get more love coming your way!
I'm disabled and spend a LOT of time listening to books and nothing makes me more miserable than to listen to a bad narrator/reader/performer. When I click on a short and hear AI, I click out of it because it is so unpleasant to hear. I sincerely wish AI would just go away! We have voices! We should use them!
I’m disabled too, rather mentally, but I’m still talented and high-functioning. I also strongly believe that this should be the top comment so far in 2024. We - as people - really need to get over this A. I. garbage and use our voices that were given to us out of luck. It shouldn’t be too late to appreciate what we can continue to create.
Yeah I cant listen to bad narrator. The AI stuff is just awful and I recognize it from first sentence. And I hate it. When it comes to voice acting, good voice actors are so important. We have so much talent, but companies like Disney like to be fuckups and use celebrities etc..as if its not a talent to be a voice actor.
@@MrPek-fe9fpAI is like CG, good ones you don't even realize it's AI, and right now it's generally "bad", a few years or even months it will hit parity, and before you know, an AI va is going to be better and more versatile than any single human could with a lifetime worth of output in an hour. Debate about their quality or how "you can always tell" is myopic to the point of blindness.
I've been trying to get into Voice Over on and off since I was 18 (about 15 years now). I love watching people who are successful in it like Richard and Sungwon, and hearing their stories and takes on the job. One thing I've learned from them and on my own is to just have fun with it. If it takes you somewhere, awesome. If it doesn't, just keep having fun with it.
9:02 I had a small ad project where I had to do like an iconic outro announcer voice and when I was hanging out with my friends, they asked me to do the voice. When I did, they lost their minds over it. I loved it because I got to make someone happy!
Zim will ALWAYS be one of my favorite shows of all time but I do love Richard's other work as well. Thanks you sir. I cant believe there was so much hate for Sungwon for anything. I still go back and watch all his youtube over and over. Plenty of us still love ya man. Wow I knew the voice for Ashe was a woman but damn I didnt know Sarah was gorgeous!
Richard Horvitz was one of the prominent voices of my childhood. His voice is always one of the voices I can almost 100% of the time pick out. He was everywhere in the things I watched growing up. Alpha 5, Daggett, Zim and Billy. And of course whenever he's a one off character or a side character in a movie or show or game it's always just like "HEY! IT'S RICHARD!". Just one of those voices you've known almost all your life that brings a level of comfort and joy. There's only a handful of voices like that for me. And he's always come across as just a person that's just pleasant to be around.
There's a huge difference between a film actor doing vo, and a celebrity doing vo... its like jack black as bowser vs ronda rousey as sonya blade... the person interested in the art vs someone that's just there for a pay check
ProZD also voixed that one robot in borderlands 3, very good performance. Richard Horvitz is legendary, he has voiced multiple of my favorite characters in movies, shows and video games. And Sarah was a staple voice of my childhood shows without even knowing who she was. An amazing roster of voice actors to be sure.
When he said that I thought of James Roday Rodriguez and his experience in a similar situation. It's sad that there's so little room for nuance and the less "typical" representation of a group.
i LOVE animated stuff and more specifically i love knowing who’s behind the voice. i also love when i can recognize someone. i don’t think there’s any way that ai cld take over, or if it did it wld be a stupid decision bc part of why we love animated shows so much is bc of the people behind our fav characters. i hope they never try to replace our fav VA’s w ai cuz it genuinely wouldn’t be comparable to the real thing
when I was playing Monster Hunter World and heard a voice that so distinctly sounded like the English voice of Kenpachi Zaraki from Bleach (David Lodge ❤️), it became a pasttime to try to find connections between voice actors in media was not expecting J.K. Simmons (who I know best as Terrence Fletcher) in Baldur's Gate. honestly the american accent kinda threw me off but it was fun to see one person i can never pin down is Matt Mercer, who is so mainstream but I can never recognize his voice when doing such different characters. I had no clue he was Ganondorf or Minsc, only familiar with him as Mcree and from CR. Same with not a single part of be even beginning to think Ashly Burch played Aloy (which is wild to even conceive of with so many hours of hearing her voice as Tina in Borderlands)
I love all voice actors. If I had known that was an option for careers when I was younger, I would have jumped on that wagon! Really great hearing interviews from people who deserve more recognition!
Love this. Waited from beginning to end. And some very good points were made throughout this video. For example introducing or rather bringing celebrities towards the world of voice acting. And so much more. I tend to write a paragraph if I don't stop now. Also love the "Destroy All". And respected to know it took Richard Horovitz two minutes and came out great in my opinion. Was one of my favourite clips from The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. Besides the tricycle one.
It's so cool to see how consistent Richard's answers are between this video and when I saw his panel at Sac Anime earlier this year (winter). I'm wildly impressed. New information thanks to the video questions, consistent advice from the panel. That is so neat.
Can we have a go at this same topic but this time have the whole cast of Critical Role ? Some of them have voiced some of the most iconic video game and anime characters of all time
I would love just an Assumptions episode with Ciritcal Role in general on here but man it would be interesting to have these topics discussed by them too
I’ve been a voice actor for over 20 years in Portugal. This was so interesting, it was amazing seeing the things that I (and I can say most of my coworkers) can absolutely relate all the way from the other side of the ocean, and the deep differences we face in this line work on this side of the world. Lovely episode ❤
Loved this! I used to want to get into VA as a kid and sat in every VA convention panel I could get to, and this brings me back to those days! I have such an appreciation for VA work and I just love what y'all do! ❤
I got to meet Mr. Horvitz a couple years ago and it was the best moment of my life. He has been someone I’ve looked up to practically my whole life and I almost cried when I got to meet him
10:10 One of the main reasons why AI will never be able to replace voice actors. I can't enjoy art that's not human made, I feel such a disconnection and lack of appreciation that just sets me off. I need to feel the intention and passion that only a human could portray, and I want a real human being behind the work I enjoy.
Honestly the part with SungWon talking about how people looking dpwn on voice actors that also do youtube or other online content stood out to me cause Ive absolutely had thoughts like that when hearing about the cast for something. Like quite literally when they announced Damien Haas as a lead for the recent Trails game I was skeptical cause I only faintly knew him from doing stuff with Smosh. But after playing the game he was a fantastic pick for the role of Van.
This is by far my favorite episode of this series. Originally I wasn't super on board with this, the whole reason I subbed was for Anthony's "I spent a day with" series, but I've been enjoying many of these.
I will always appreciate actual talent. People who take years upon years to master drawing, voice acting, singing, etc. and perform at high levels consistently; those are people to be inspired by and what I love. I've consistently been at older mindset of "if you can't walk on stage and do it raw or on the spot, you're not ready." True talent is creating good habits and working on it consistently with time. That's the difference for me.
it has already killed people and soon enough it wont be by accident which is what scares me the most an ai will not question instructions it will do exactly as its told, it has no feelings or mercy.
34:33 I wish more people looked into this because it absolutely breaks my heart, because I was very aware of the treatment Ms. Natochenny was receiving when I was a kid and up until a certain point. Kids at my school would say the "Old Ash was better" and I knew there was one before her, but both were always great to me. A VA change didn't bother me. But then we have a bunch of fucking manchildren at the time sending death threats to a person just trying to do her job. It's not her fault whatsoever. Everytime I'd look to follow Ms. Natochenny on social media it was inevitable to see negative comments on her feed. "Bring back the old Ash" "She's not my Ash" followed by plenty of vulgar and disrespectful things I don't wish to share. If you want an example of how tremendously fucking weird people were to her, I recall a reddit thread (it may still be up idk) where a dude asked her in a convention who would win in a knife fight, her or Veronica Taylor? 😐 who the hell in their right minds asks that? That kind of stupid shit was terrible. I forgot what Ms. Natochenny responded with but I know for sure it kind of came off as depressing. Now I don't claim to know how she feels, but from the perspective of a fan who grew up with hearing her on TV, it sure feels like she was really going through a dark time. Another VA I do think shared a similar experience initially as well is Jason Griffith, the former voice of Sonic the Hedgehog. People were outright wishing for him to die and I think there was a certain person on TH-cam doing all that threatening. People get upset over decisions outside their control, it's not either voice actors faults. They have a job to do and whether people like it or not, we have to respect that. I know Ms. Natochenny and Jason Griffith are doing a lot better now but I still wish them the very best moving forward
As a con lover, I love meeting VA and them just randomly doing their voices without anyone asking them. They are always so nice and welcoming to their fans. AND it's always their young fans that I love seeing them interact with because their little faces always light up with such excitement.
I really like Horvitz' quote when he steps outside for a moment. That "I'll see what happens. I'll get through it. I'm ok." is a very good affirmation to use almost anytime.
I read a story once where the character went on a date to the movies. When the credits started rolling and everyone had got up to leave, one of the characters got up and yelled "THANK YOU -insert random name from the credits-" and the other character joined in yelling Thank You's to all the people who's names are usually never read. I started doing this (respectfully and not yelling) when I see a movie or a TV show. My mom saw me doing it and now she does it too. It's cathartic I think. Feels nice. Also get to read some cool names.
Richard Horvitz is on my Mount Rushmore of voice actors. From Alpha 5, to Daggett, to Zim, to Billy, to Destroy all Humans, to Phychonauts....i cannot express the respect I have for this man.
This was fun to watch, I remember the first character I heard Richard voicing for was Dagget from angry beavers on Nickelodeon. The character list he and several other voice actors have is just incredible
I appreciate Richard's nuanced take on AI, not outright bashing it like many do but appreciating where the line in his eyes should be drawn between a big deal and not is a tall order to expect from anyone these days. I love the emerging technologies and what individuals are capable of doing all my themselves to create their visions, but I also love the roles Richard and Sarah have performed that made me laugh, cry, and be entertained. I myself love to entertain people with my voice and speaking as well, and even though I don't have the background or professionalism these folks do, the sense of joy seeing my voice and my acting contribute to a production or work derrives from the joy I know an audiance gains from a good show and a good performance, because I have been that audiance so much myself experiencing those emotions. I hope they and any other actors regardless of how far on your journey you are can entertain and motivate others through your performances!
I loved this video, it really makes these people stand out more, that have done so many great voice acting jobs and clear things up that people think/say on a daily basis, this is why we need to stop hating on dubbing, just be reasonable towards the person who is trying their hardest to project the voice in a certain language that comes natural to them.

I love this so much. So timely and truly needed. Thank you for bringing them together. It’s scary to think any type of artist could be driven out by AI. Who really wants that?
I love that you can hear Richard speak and think, "He's probably a voice actor."
His voice is so unique you just know people are paying him to say things for them lol
I got to meet Sarah last year in Virginia. She was one of the nicest VAs I’ve met, love her.
💙💙💙
What she said when she was put in the booth like that. would explain why her first performance on Ash wasn't great. I'm glad she got better and got that energetic, angry, expressive attitude as it went on
Thank you for voicing my sketch of Walmarts founder Mr Sam Walton. I will be telling my future generations of this day.
OMG
That sketch had me cackling until I started coughing. Genuinely did not expect a Sam Walton cameo 😂
THIS is how I find out that Sungwon is also in Delicious in Dungeon?? Man is so versatile!
Yeah i watched it Subbed, but if i knew Sungwon is in it, i might've watched dubbed
Ai scares me so bad. I truly hope people appreciate human creation over a lifeless robot prompt.
I'm hoping that most people will realize how incredibly lackluster AI's outputs are once the novelty wears off.
@sushiroll3795 well, we've seen the crap that's come out of Hollywood for the last decade or two; can't really get more lackluster than that
right now it's lifeless. in a few years, the AI will achieve quite the level of intelligence that will make "it" as alive as any other human. THAT is the scary thing.
PEOPLE do. CORPORATIONS on the other hand...
@@sushiroll3795 Lackluster? It's only going to get better. I've played around with some image/video/music creation stuff and have had some creations actually be decent and compare that to what was available just a few years ago is insane. This is also just what has been made available for free and nerfed by the companies.
The novelty wont wear off it will be 99 percent of the future of creation of all art.
Richard Horvitz is an amazing conversationalist and a story teller! 🙌 hope he does a podcast where he goes indepth about VA industry and tells incredible BTS stories behind animation studios!
he recently was a guest on Jim Cummings' which sounds close to what you want

As an emerging voice actor myself, hearing voice over discussions from people from three different voice acting timeline dynamics talk about these topics and their different viewpoints is so enlightening. Especially the talk about AI. I've had a former client who I did a promo spot for jump to generative AI due to how cheap and easy it was to steal the work of a deceased promo artist to sell a product they were selling. It's not a good feeling to have a machine chosen over yourself. It comes across as very disengenuous when it is picked up on.
Same I’m so terrified about AI. I hope that it somehow becomes illegal to be used in a way that steals jobs especially from creatives
I thought it said Al. like weird Al. I thought Weird Al was going to replace all voice actors

Seeing them all in one episode is so freaking cool! Thank you for bringing these three amazing VAs on board for this episode, and I hope this isn't the last one about this line of work!
As a small voice actor, the thought of my voice being replaced by AI terrifies me. It also takes away the authenticity of voice acting.
@@DawnOldham I completely agree !
Please please please bring ProZD on a Smosh try not to laugh, he’d slay

I was thinking a Legend of Zelda character. None in particular, she just kinda has that vibe. Unfortunately LoZ is not known for its voice acting.
@@SarahNatochenny1Sarah I really like your personality 😂
The whole "voice actors get a lot of backlash for replacing a voice actor" the backlash has to be the dumbest thing that "fans" or people can do. It's not the voice actors fault, there are directors, producers, casting directors. yet people are still stupid enough to blame the voice actor, it's sad honestly
True. The casting issue with Yoruichi from Bleach was a good example of that
Sub elitists in a nutshell basically
Yeah wrongly directed anger
Fan behavior gets dangerous
I have nothing against replacing other actors in principle, but in a lot of cases it just makes me sad.
Like Mako in ATLA or Lance Riddick recently, whenever i hear the voice has changed and i realized the actor has passed, i get a bit meloncholic.
21:31 I thought he was gonna say "and I went outside, and I smoked 6 packs"
Lmao
I love that voice actors are getting more and more recognition. they deserve it
Anthony thankyou for making an outlet for so many people so we can get to know them better!!!!
that whole VA replacement bit was a heavy topic within the Persona fandom because they revoiced all the characters for Persona 3 Reload and the hate that they got from that loud vocal minority was astonishing. most of the fandom was excited to see the new spin on these characters and even breathed new life in some of the characters that made the characters feel fresh. that being said I would love to see Sarah in the next Persona game, eh Atlus?
I actually have such HUGE respect over voice actors, them being the reason that can make you feel and connect with a character and their stories. AI can never replicate the feeling that actual voice actors make me feel that goes beyond just entertainment. Just their voices alone can bring comfort to the people who find much comfort frkm the characters they love. Much love to all voice actors and hope you guys get more love coming your way!
I’ve talked to Sarah on IG about voice acting, she’s an absolute sweetheart and an amazing person!!
I love seeing voice actors on video and hearing them speak normally and going "oh I understand why you get roles"
And when an established content creator uses an ai voiceover for like a TH-cam short instead of just talking like they do every normal video.
For real, especially channel with AI generated image nowadays
"I'm a bee and I'm a dad" is so good 💀❤ he nailed that. That's exactly how I imagined him sounding
Why does Sarah have the same exact physical energy as Megora from Disney's Hercules?
SHE DOESSSSS omfg. she reminds me of the VA for Toph from ATLA. they’re both so gorg
Damn 😮. Spot on!
Holy Cow. I looked it up and Richard is only like 60! Dude is looking great for 60!
46:10 I love how without any prompt Richard perfectly captures Angela's voice on the line about cat food soda
Oh my god I want to hear the two of them doing a bit
I love having Nicole actually on screen and interacting more with the panel in these videos. She has such a lovely presence.
There's a huge difference between a film actor doing vo, and a celebrity doing vo... its like jack black as bowser vs ronda rousey as sonya blade... the person interested in the art vs someone that's just there for a pay check
And then there's Megan Fox as Nitara...
Richard talking about his ethnicity and not wanting to have to show someone his ancestry is so real.
I relate to that so much.
When he said that I thought of James Roday Rodriguez and his experience in a similar situation. It's sad that there's so little room for nuance and the less "typical" representation of a group.
The absolute power house "Whaaaat?" That came out of me when I just learned SungWon did Senshi from Delicious in Dungeon!!!!
The voice creation at the end was so so good
I will never forget that moment, when the hurt in XYZ in Ash's voice. "YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE HOW I feel. Hit so hard in the dub fr
i LOVE animated stuff and more specifically i love knowing who’s behind the voice. i also love when i can recognize someone. i don’t think there’s any way that ai cld take over, or if it did it wld be a stupid decision bc part of why we love animated shows so much is bc of the people behind our fav characters. i hope they never try to replace our fav VA’s w ai cuz it genuinely wouldn’t be comparable to the real thing
when I was playing Monster Hunter World and heard a voice that so distinctly sounded like the English voice of Kenpachi Zaraki from Bleach (David Lodge ❤️), it became a pasttime to try to find connections between voice actors in media
was not expecting J.K. Simmons (who I know best as Terrence Fletcher) in Baldur's Gate. honestly the american accent kinda threw me off but it was fun to see
one person i can never pin down is Matt Mercer, who is so mainstream but I can never recognize his voice when doing such different characters.
What's stopping you?
I absolutely adore Richard. Always such a pure source of delight and so, so wise.
Can we have a go at this same topic but this time have the whole cast of Critical Role ? Some of them have voiced some of the most iconic video game and anime characters of all time
I would love just an Assumptions episode with Ciritcal Role in general on here but man it would be interesting to have these topics discussed by them too
Omggg Richard! This is gonna be an awesome vid :)
Seeing these 3 in a room together is insane to me
I’ve been a voice actor for over 20 years in Portugal.
29:13 Richard is so wise in this video, good sir please write a book
I dont know why but I read your comment in Richards voice and it was a perfect fit
I know he explained why but now I wanna hear Richard speak Spanish. No accent, just Spanish.
LETS GO! ive been waiting on this episode
21:30 Missed opportunity to say he went outside to smoke 6 packs of cigarrettes

MY BOY RICHARD
There are lots of old guys who say shit, but Richard Horvitz actually has a lot of substantial to say. When he drops wisdom it feels real
I grew out of Pokémon by the time Sarah started voicing Ash, but in the few interviews I've seen of her, she's been very kind
Ur never too old for Pokémon u should give it another chance
It’s impossible to grow out of something that’s made for everyone
this is such an amazing lineup
46:09 Cat food soda shoutout!

All 3 of these people have brought hours of joy to my life and I can't thank them enough
You didn't talk about Sungwon's most important contribution, the voice of Doctor from Bigtop Burger.
"You don't think I talk like this in the day to day, do you?"
AI is fucking terrifying
The fact there are people supporting it in the creative field. Deviantart, an art site is all for it.
it has already killed people and soon enough it wont be by accident which is what scares me the most
an ai will not question instructions it will do exactly as its told, it has no feelings or mercy.
@@Sharky_0456 an AI TH-cam bot could have made a better and more coherent comment critiquing AI, it's already surpassed you in this case.
They’re so creative with giving characters the voice by the way they look. It was great!
I hope someone sees this video as a 3-way audition for a show that hasn't been written yet. There's quite a dynamic here!
As a con lover, I love meeting VA and them just randomly doing their voices without anyone asking them. They are always so nice and welcoming to their fans. AND it's always their young fans that I love seeing them interact with because their little faces always light up with such excitement.
Mr. Horvitz has so many great quotes and sayings. He really needs to publish a book with 100 life sayings.
Richard Horvitz, the voice of my childhood. So great to see him here talking so candidly. Much love to SungWon and Sarah as well!
Excellent takes love these voice actors
I love Richard Horvitz! Amazing that you got him for this 😁❤️
Sarah is super underrated
I really like Horvitz' quote when he steps outside for a moment. That "I'll see what happens. I'll get through it. I'm ok." is a very good affirmation to use almost anytime.
SUNGWON LETS GOOOO
Zangwun? Zingwin?
But yeah, Sungwon has such a distinct and nice voice. I love it 😂
I read a story once where the character went on a date to the movies.
I love this! Kudos to these amazing fellow actors! looks like a super fun conversation too.
I have been waiting for this episode! Such a great episode.
This was fun to watch, I remember the first character I heard Richard voicing for was Dagget from angry beavers on Nickelodeon. The character list he and several other voice actors have is just incredible
SUNGWON VOICED SENSHI??? i've been following him for years and i had no idea it was his voice i was hearing in dungeon meshi!!!
3 absolute legends!
RAZPUTIN AQUATO (psychonauts) is my favorite richard horvitz character!
Sarah is the coolest. Such an awesome, talented person.
