As a firefighter I've fought several fires in combines. Most of the time it's started by a spark catching dust on fire. A lot of the time the following dust explosion will blow access panels several feet away. The dust will carry flames all over the inside. A small fire extinguisher is not going to slow it down at all. Now the length of time the fire department got on scene will be dictated by several things. 1. Did the operator and person in the field with him called it in immediately, or when they knew they couldn't control the fire. 2. Was closest station out on a call somewhere else. 3. Was this field out along the edge of the station district area. 4. Traffic unusually heavy. And so on but the most important thing is that the people at the scene were safe and uninjured. We have had the same thing happen. Luckily we got it put out with a quick response from the local volunteer fire department. Ours started at the turbo. At any rate, we have 2 more fire extinguishers on the combine now than we had before :)
But fire extinguishers won't work on Big fires it won't work on huge fires it's designed to work on small fires not Big ones the Fire Brigade is needed for Big fires as they have a stronger fire hose unlike our normal fire hose the one the Fire service has is stronger therefore their hose will Work guaranteed.
You dont understand. We were fighting it with every fire extinguisher we could get our hands on. We used the ones in the trucks, combine etc trying to save the machine until the fire truck could get there. That 5 minutes or so with he fire extinguishers made a huge difference. Had we not used the ones from the trucks etc the fire department couldn't have saved the machine. The other thing we did religiously was use a leaf blower to clean the combine each evening to get the dust off of the machine and I am positive that helped as well by removing a lot of the fuel source that might have been on it.
Even a small fire is very hard to put out, dust smolders away in places you can't get at, once your extinguisher is empty it will spread. I had a baler catch fire from a bearing giving out, because of the chain oiling system, all the dust was socked in oil and burnt very well. I used up the 1st extinguisher and almost had it out, and then it started spreading again. Then got a 2nd and had all the flames out, but the wind keeping the smoldering dust burning, and soon there were flames again....got it out finally with a water tanker I had.
You are correct. For combines you need a large one. They had a 10 pounder on the combine and used it but all it did was knock it down for a moment. Another five pounder was just pissing in the wind by the time they used it. You need at least a 20 pounder, minimum, and a water extinguisher as well. The hydraulic oil dripping on the exhaust manifold kept reigniting due to the heat. A water unit would have helped remove some of the heat, a dry chemical won't. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I literally just watched a video of one of these same machines. There's a separator within the unit that rides on two bearings and the bearings went bad and caused a fire. However, the operator heard the noise and reacted quickly and saved the machine and the unit.
Nope just a rear tire exploding. When the left front tire went it was heard almost two miles away. It lifted the whole front of the combine up when it went and sent burning rubber several hundred feet away.

All combines are high risk for fires just because of the environment they work in. Keeping them clean is the most improtant thing though. This combine did not stand a chance. But who knows. That's a shame.
Did you literally not listen to anything in the video this is plain and simple a blown hydraulic line that undoubtedly sprayed onto a surface that should not be sprayed due to its Heat and the whole thing lit up!
This combine has ben cleaned. The only reason it went up is the ruptured hydraulic line spraying oil on the engine that had been running hard for several hours. Too much heat and a plenty there to burn.
Most combine fires start from either bearings heating up, chaff and debris getting on the engine, or electrical issues. This one was a ruptured hydraulic line beside a hot engine. You can usually tell what caused them by where they start on the combine but not always. I've seen electrical fires go up even faster than this one went up.

Not in this case! It could have been straight out of the wash bay and would have still went up in flames. It main hydraulic pressure line burst over a red hot exhaust manifold. But you are right most of the time it is a debris/cleaning issue with all combine fires.
ah, well that is too bad. you would think the manufacture would toughen up the lines that run through hot areas. unless this was driver error just pushing the machine too hard.

South Georgia Farming Live on a ranch in Texas and have done insurance for 15 years. Combines and bailers are notorious for burning up equipment. People don't realize these are actual cash value policies and most farmers run them for years and years. Insurance will not afford brand new equipment...even new ones that go up are subject to depreciation. Glad everyone was ok.
So bearings will go bad and start throwing sparks basically? That's a new one for me, but with all the moving parts on these things it makes total sense. And it's not like you have a warning gauge or can hear it go when your in the cab of these things.

No such thing as a "poor" farmer but to hear them tell they aint making any money. SOME damn body is to afford equipment like that.
+Robert Clark Well they did have insurance but they did not get a new one the next day. They did not want this to happen as they were in the middle of harvest. It took them three weeks to get another combine they could afford with the amount of insurance money they recieved. It was an older model than this one but in better condition. This unit had some issues when they bought it used but had ran well for three seasons. Not all farmers live off the government!
+Robert Clark You're obviously one of those uninformed city slickers that has no clue about farming and where their food comes from and what we go through to provide it to you. SURE HOPE YOU ARE STERILE DUMBASS!!!
+Robert Clark you think they have them all paid off? sure theres multi million dollar operations that own most of their stuff and its all new, but for the most part guys that have everything fully paid off run slightly older equipment. and do you know how long it takes to get to that stage? not just anyone can decide they wanna be a farmer. bet you couldnt pull the hrs it takes for harvest/planting season
Well, you can tell you don't know anything about farming.
This is one reason to keep your equipment clean guys. Not jumping to conclusions but that is the most likely cause.
@@terrellfarms1 Always wondered what the cause could be on a newer combine like this. I know not cleaning the engine compartment is one cause but hydro fluid on the manifold, that'll do it too. Unlucky.
@@terrellfarms1 so to blow a line is this thing being over worked? It's pretty new to blow a line it seems like. I believe what your saying, but this can't happen that often considering during harvest Deere is 70% of what I see.
@@heatmoon the 9660 was not produced after about 2006 or 2007, so it's not necessarily too new.
By the looks of it, it had been well maintained.

If anything, Massey combines are far more likely to burn than John Deere ones.... Massey still uses a lot of belts in their newer combines.
how did it happen?
Негр, я так понял, успел спасти самое важное? Свой ланч. :)

I would have at least tried to get that header off
How? You aren't going to lift it off by hand and their front end loaded would have taken 30 minutes to get their from their shop. The machine was engulfed in 10 minutes. The machine hydraulics were gone because the main hydraulic line ruptured. Nothing on the machine was working. The head was not worth the effort anyways.
Good job on trying to help out
Good job on commenting on something you know nothing about. If you notice i did not film the whole incident. They had nothing but two extinguishers and that is it. No shovels or water. d i was on it looked like they had it under control. I had nothing either. From the side of the field. I could have pissed on it, if that would make you happy.
@@terrellfarms1 Great response asshole. I'll take it up with our 16,000 acres and see if I know what I'm talking about.
@@ampatriot One asshole response deserves another!
Help out with what? I sure the hell ain't gonna risk my life running towards a giant fireball I don't care who you are.
Колесо новое осталось...
My sharecropper burned his JD up Friday. Belts rarely burn, bearings most likely culprit and hydraulic lines next.
Hate to see any of them burn. This one was definitely a blown hydraulic hose. I seen it go and the operator heard it. He could also tell because all the hydraulic functions stopped working. Most fires on combines are caused by bearing failures though. Thanks for watching.
Nothing burns like a Deere
It's not John Deere's fault that the vast majority of big cash crop farms use their products
@@Ethan-ck6iz They do design it though(hydraulic line over exhaust manifold)
@@Ethan-ck6iz I've seen one of these burn before, same model. You'd think Deere put out a recall and sent their field techs out if it was a big problem. Also saw an old Class burn, that was fun. Nothing left, rims.

I’m So sorry. it must suck to see your machine go up. Hopefully you will get a brand new one with insurance..

Даже в России трактор с бочкой воды за комбайном ездит, а в Америке нет!
Ага,и ещё с бутылкой 2л.
Are you ok

Why not use extinguisher????
They did two of them. This is not a second by second film. There are some parts missing due to low camera batteries. You can actually see the operator get out with the fire extinguisher.
