- Mercedes Benz AMG GTR Review & Drive. In this video I highlight the unique features of the AMG GTR and discuss similarities to other prominent American cars such as the Dodge SRT Viper, Dodge Hellcat and Shelby GT500 Track Pack. The Mercedes Benz AMG GTR is a very limited edition supercar produced from 2018-2020 in coupe and convertible form. Less than 750 units made worldwide for the GTR Coupes. My car is in the launch edition spec of Green Hell Magno Matte Paint, Carbon Ceramic Brakes and more amazing options. This hand built car utilizes carbon fiber, magnesium and aluminum throughout and also uses the same DCT that Ferrari uses in many of their high horsepower cars such as the 458, 488 and F12. Amazing. You're totally right about timing, same thing happened to me where a green hell max specced one just happened to become available locally when I was initially looking at one out of state. As for those wheels, it's the premium light weight performance "RXE" option and they were available on all GTRs but apparently not a lot of ppl liked the way they looked due to the thick silver lip...but they are the lightest factory option weighing in at only 18.1lb fronts and 21.7lb rears.

so crazy I haven't seen your channel in a while... however I always search and research different cars cause Im a nut case when It comes to vehicles... I was debating on buying a amg gtc or gtr... Phil I’m thrilled for you. As a owner of a C63S competition package and a 350R i can attest to the difference in quality and sophistication. The 350 is special in its own way, but even my lesser Bi Turbo engine is in a different league.
If I didn’t need a 4 door daily driver the GTr would be in my garage. I have almost the same seats they are awesome up to about a 2 hour drive. But are a little firm for much longer than that. I looked at a M3 but the AMG outclass’s the M3 in almost every way.
I don’t know what you can really do to improve a GTr. I tuned my C63S but your car is pretty much the pinnacle of any AMG.
Enjoy the new beast you worked hard for it. Im just a little jealous but happy you finally stepped up to a AMG.
I might dump the M3 for a C63 BS if i can find one in perfect shape these engines are animals

I worked at a Mercedes for years. I've driven a ton of these. They are fun. I personally hate how high the whole center console is and for me it was weird getting in an out but still, for those complaints I'd take one. Always loved satin and lime green type paints too

Love this video, love the car. I was looking at a GT3 Porsched but after driving it I felt it was great on the track but that's it. I watched some videos on the GT R, including yours and just got hooked so I just bought a 2019 and it is beyond amazing. Just took it to the track for the first time and even more amazing! This will be a car I keep for my collection, definitely not selling this one and I agree with how rare they are. Great job on the video, you helped make up my mind and I definitely like the 2018-19 much better than the 2020, I really prefer the analog gauges and switches, they look much better. We have a 2021 GT 63s and that interior is sick, but it doesn't belong in a true track car. Your car is beautiful and that spec is outstanding, have fun and thanks again.

You got this at the right time. Next generation of this car is a completely different vehicle. 4WD, 800 lbs heavy, no rear transaxle, no front mid engine layout, no dry sump. Pretty much an S class coupe. Sad to say it, but this was probably the last non-electrified sports car from Mercedes that costs under $500k
Also apparently the 2020s don’t have OPF in the US. It has an aggressive valve that doesn’t open completely unless you get a valve module or push it hard asf.
But yeah, good luck to anyone trying to find one of these. Will only get harder and harder to get a nice example like this
I agree this car is extremely rare as well AMG hand built these in very low numbers compared to the abundance of 911 models out in the market. The new GT looks great and should sell better which i bet was their goal because the AMG GTR is really stiff and not a typical luxury Benz product its really hard core and i love it. One of my favorite cars I ever owned

The 350R is one of a kind but ive had 3 Shelby 350 plus a GTpp1 in the last 9 years I needed a change from the S550 platform I racked up over 100k miles combined

These cars are so beautiful and mean looking at the same time. My mild-mannered wife saw one the other day in a matte grey paint and she said without hesitation, “there’s a panty-dropper”.
Can't wait to see what you do to it. That color is amazing when I saw it in person when I took delivery of my c63 and still is.

That’s the optional “RCX” wheel that any GTR buyer had the option to spec and pay the upcharge for when new.
It is an AWESOME wheel, super light, looks great, frankly better than many aftermarket options I see people put on these cars.
Only could get the grey spoke version on the GTR PRO, the black spoke option was available on both the GTR, GTR convertible, and GTR PRO.
Thanks for this info on the wheels because I personally love them. It seems most opted for the all black ones on these cars based on everything i saw on the market last few years. I like how the machine lip gives the appearance of a multi piece visually
AppTech is the company that forges them, 18.1 lbs for the front 19x10’s and 21.7 lbs for the rear 20x12’s is what I weighed them at with center caps and valve stems installed.

Agree - the RXC* are some of the very Best OEM wheels ever made. Absolutely exceptional in design & function, with superlative weight savings. Love mine as well!
A relatively paltry $1700 option price as well, compared to what you get
I called the dealership to ask the cost on replacement wheels and they quoted me $3700 front and $3900 rear of course its the Mercedes parts tax but to option this on order for $1700 is a steal
Try getting in & out of an SLS or a GT40. This car is amazing & an amazing final fling for the AMG biturbo V8. I had a 2009 Brabus C63 that was even more extreme than the black series.
Enjoy it. Looks beautiful. Funny you mentioned Shelby vs this car. I opted for both (GT500 & GTC Roadster).

CarFax today have so many false information its very tricky and you have to ask the sellers the right questions and know what to look for. I looked at over 35 of these cars all failed to meet my high standard

I looked at a Pro it has manual adjustments on shocks for compression and Rebound plus more aero its very hardcore they made like 100 i think

There is one 2018 in the same spec for sale with 1056 mile on it here in Sweden. To much money for me though but a NOS car

Hi. Thank you for sharing this . I could buy a low mile GTR , or wait for the new one. Do you think there is an advantage of this particular one versus new ones coming out in few months based on the reviews you have seen so far ?
The new AMG GT is built on the shared SL platform, 4 seats AWD , air suspension its not even close to being similar. It depends what you truly want. The 18-20 is a raw animal race car the new one is a beautiful practical GT car.
What is the reliability history with these cars? Any specific problems to look out for?

Couldn't agree more! The 350R was painful to drive with my back issues and I wasn’t using it because of that.
I bought a gen 5 Viper and the build quality isn't an issue. It is after all a hand built car. The real issue is the reliability. The 8.4 V10 was prone to fail due to an oiling issue. Especially the early run of those cars. That being said the AMG GTR sounds great! So much better than the flat-plane version.

love the car the stripe is kinda unique and i am considering redoing it in a more custom version soon but the good thing it is not painted so i can always remove or redo easily. the rims make the whole car i do not like these with the all black rims.
@autofanaticcars yeah the stripe is kinda on a island. On your GT350 they went over the entire car, the way stripes should be.
Will you swap out the rims you think, like some dark bronze HRE's🤔
Awesome car ! Got ride of my 19 QV for a 17 c63s coupe. While i love the stiff suspension and v8 motor, i don't particularly like the transmission as i miss the feel of that ZF tranny and how it snaps your neck on upshifts and the feel you get on the downshifts. Question i have is does your DCT tranny in your Gtr give you a feel on the upshifts and downshifts?
Thats the reason i never bought the C63 i had an E63s those cars use a conventional torque converter 7 speed auto. The DCT in the AMG GTR is the exact same transaxle that Ferrari used so its really aggressive and awesome. Check my other GTR videos on the channel to get a feel for it

I’ve watched your videos ever since I bought my first Alfa Romeo. I’m currently in an NRING edition Giulia Quadrifoglio and have been watching these cars to see where their prices are headed. I was disappointed when you went to the M3 but totally understand with Alfa’s lack of customer service. How does the AMG compare to the Alfa?
That is awesome! The AMG GTR destroys the Alfa Romeo QV in every way possible but there totally different cars in different categories

Yeah the M3 was on the fly decision to get rid of my broken Alfa at the time and is a great knock around daily driver but the M3 is going to be replaced soon I will be posting a video asking for viewer suggestions on cars I should consider. the AMG GTR is on another level all together.

2019 same as 2018 the 20 have different steering wheels and no more buttons on console

Truly a beautiful monster.
I will say, the biggest advantage of the Viper over this one is... You can actually drive it and put miles on them.
Quite reliable.
But finish wise... Yeah, even the newest Gen V doesn't compare.
now that AMG released their new GT which is on the new SL chassis with 4 seats and AWD this should shoot values of the GTR higher and enough to enjoy racking on more miles which is great. Had mine out all day today love this car.

is there PPF on the paint? Getting a magno amg soon and don't know if i should ppf it

@Caro Full Car PPF on the magno paint is a MUST. Can get a bit pricey, esp on a GT R with full CF Roof, full CF Rear Wing, full CF Rear Diffuser & Side Skirts, etc etc coverage, but absolutely necessary. And you will drive so much more at peace!
These have been weighing on me for a while and I'd love one but I'd have to give up my 991.2 Turbo S to get it. My Turbo S is a quicker car but these are so capable, I'd don't think I'd miss the little extra. I just don't know...
These drive so incredible and more raw and visceral than the Turbo S you have. These cars are very unique and rare still
@@autofanaticcars I'm sure it's all subjective but I get it. I have my supercharged S2k and my 2SS 1LE for my manual fixes. It'd be hard to part with the TTS, as it just does everything so freaking well!! Run's high 9's in the quarter, laps the track very quickly, and travels well comfy. I'm sure these do as well (GT-C or GT-S are prob. a bit more comfy). I'll have to find one to drive and compare.
I believe this WAS gonna be the next doge viper (Benz diamler shared platform) but that idea was scrapped and Benz kept the platform exclusive

Shelby is gone for now i had 3 of them plus a GT PP over the last 9 years time for something different and new and the AMG GTR is simply incredible.

Never M3 is on its way next
carbon ceramics don't improve stopping power, only brake fade really. You wouldn't notice the difference on the street.
on these cars there is a huge difference in initial bite and stopping power it is very substantial versus the iron rotors even on the new M3 i have i drove a CCB version it is night and day. these CCB are touchy and you need to get use to them otherwise youll snap your neck and hit the window.
Does the interior rattle ? How’s the quality ?
Hand built German car that is mega stiff and well made you might hear a minor creak on very broken roads from car being so stiff but same deal on any GT Porsche

Even though I am an 'Alfa Romeo' guy I do love this car and the G-wagon. The rest of their output is plastic fantastic.
Had a 2020 C63 for 8 months - hated it, bad handling, could not get power down - looked like a taxi with a body kit.
The AMG GTR is the only real car they ever built from ground up all others were mediocre production cars they stuffed big engines in. The SLS is also great and was pre cursor to GT platform
Sad to see the Shelby go, but at least the GTR is pretty cool.
yeah the Shelby GT350R was a special car but i had 3 Shelbys GT350 and 1 GT PP over the course of 9 years and i needed a change in 9 years driving the same S550 chassis. I was not using the Shelby much over the last two years since I badly injured my back and every time I drove it I was in pain and this made me do the swap into something I always wanted and was more easier on my body to enjoy.
If your gonna get rid of gt350r…. This is the one you do it for👍🏼

physical gauges are so much better and timeless. All these new cars with screens are going to look terrible in time.

Sorry about your condition but everyone is quite different in that regard of what eats them up and what doesn’t for me it’s always the physical condition of things such as car’s homes etc. its because im a craftsman that makes me this way always strive for perfection
