Zlatan in 2018, Ted Lasso in 2020, Wrexham in 2021, Bale's last-minute goal in the 2022 MLS Cup, now Messi in 2023, and then the World Cup in 2026. These last few years have been crazy for football in the U.S.

      how naive are you?
they do that not because the US has such an amazing football tradition but because the money they generate also the media and marketing power.
the average american could care less about "soccer" just like when Pele played for NY even the US government intervened to get him to retire in the US for millions no other club would pay for him then.

I think Messi joined the MLS at the perfect time, even without having a huge international name in the league it’s market share of sports interest in the US has been climbing due to a multitude of reasons such as clubs actually building their own academies and being able to cast a wider net to capture the attention of the youth, with the news of him joining interest is sky rocketing and if I am remembering correctly it has surpassed hockey and taken the number 4 spot right behind baseball. It’s an exciting time for American soccer fans.

    • @19ars92

Nah i think it’s because of the demographic growth of people whose background comes from countries that worship “soccer” more than the average “traditional American” actually changing their pastime sports like the NFL and NBA for the MLS.

I truly think Messi will do it. The amount of social media today, and latinos in the US and latinos wanting to leave south america, this would be a door wide open for the MLS to conquer the south american talent market offering visa, money, fame. Plus the chance of playing with or against Messi is too high to not take the chance. He's going to take MLS fame to new levels. Problem is when he leaves, if Miami can hold its fanbase, unless a new rising star comes through, i doubt it

When Beckham came here it was massive. The MLS in my opinion wouldn’t be where it is now if it wasn’t for Beckham. Yes the MLS isn’t a top 5 league, but their growth the past 10 to 15 years has been really cool. Overall I’ve considered MLS a major league for a good while now. They’ve surpassed the NHL in attendance. Also when it comes to Americans late 30s and younger they grew up around soccer as kids. Soccer is mainstream. I’m tired of people using that an excuse when the national team under performs.

There is a lifestyle factor for a player the caliber of Messi that can only be had in the US. The US is one of the only places on the planet where a superstar on his level can walk into that grocery store and not be immediately mobbed by paparazzi, fans, and the like.
He can continue his playing career and enjoy a level of anonymity due to his stardom being in a sport that isn’t closely followed by everyone there. He’s easily the most talented athlete playing in Miami, but the media will spend a lot more time talking about Tua Tagovailoa than about him.
That anonymity might be priceless to someone who hasn’t been able to have it since before he started shaving. I think that is a huge factor in why guys come here at the end of their careers. They can earn a big paycheck with relatively low taxes, they won’t be challenged to keep their starting spot, and they can enjoy living like a normal person for a couple of years while they ponder life after retirement.

Messis. reason for choosing Miami are a few. Firstly is the lifestyle for him and family. He doesn't need the money to have to put his family in conditions like in Saudi Arabia where the culture is totally different to what he is used to.
Second the financial win he will eventually get it's just as good.
Third, He won't have to play in a hard competition in Europe which would shorten his career. I think he is hoping that playing in an easier league will get him to still be fit to play in the world cup in 2026, and in America, his home. He is obsessed with football so much which is why he is a genius at it and he won't want it to end so soon.
He could have taken the money from the Saudis and do hard labour for 1-2 years, or he could be in Miami feeling the vibes... If I was him, I would have chosen the same.

I think what MLS needs to do is do their own style of soccer when it comes to team rebranding. That's what made me love MLS back in the 90s and early 2000s. I think the main problem with soccer in the United States is we treat the sport as a business and not as a game.

Also, dont forget there is no relegation / promotion in the US. Which just makes "bad" teams tank / lose on purpose which is dumb and very unsportsman-like, IMHO. In global football, fans can STILL be happy about surviving in the league and not getting kicked out(or a lower league team winning promotion).
