  • This tutorial walkthrough beginner guide is aimed at camera collectors and students learning the Canon AT-1. This video will provide a general layout and handling guide for the Canon AT-1 as well as tips about how to use the camera effectively.
Canon released the AT-1 as a fully manual 35mm film camera. The AT-1, a direct competitor to cameras like the K1000, was a student- and hobbyist-focused camera sold outside of Japan and primarily, if not exclusively, in the U.S. Today, nearly five decades after the A series was first released, the AT-1 remains, in my experience, the most-robust, most-reliable of the Canon A series cameras.

I adore this camera. It's what I learned photography on as a kid, and it taught me so much. Using a fully manual camera really helped me understand how each setting impacts exposure and focus. The analog light meter also helped me wrap my head around the concept that one frame can have multiple levels of light to account for.
I got back into analog photography a few months ago, and after 20+ years of sitting in the closet, all it needed were new light seals and a cleaning. Still a joy to shoot with and reliable as always. It was originally my dad's, and he was stoked when he found out it was still around and functioning.

I found an AT-1 near a lake when I was a child, we finnished the film and never used it again.
I just bought a new film a week ago and wanted to get it started again...
well... thanks for this video 🙃

Great job, David. This is my all-time favorite camera. I was still in high school when these came out, so I couldn't quite afford a new one, but I bought one as soon as I could. Today I have several, including my original which is still my main camera.
My experience mirrors yours in that I've bought several on the 'Bay, and even the ones that were sold as non-working only took a minor homemade CLA to get them going.
Canon originally brought these out as a bargain alternative to the AE-1, (although the ad copy skirted that so as to not offend anyone) but quickly discovered that the primary reason that people were buying them was for their features and ease of use rather than the price point.
Now I'm going to watch the next installment. Thanks.

Thank you, Mike! Yeah, these are great and by and large problem-free, even today.

I let my AT1 get wet in a drizzle and the light meter is no longer trustworthy :( it was my first purchased camera (from a thrift store 2 years ago) and i loved it so much. This camera is a great teacher not only about metering, but patience and decision making. I went with an F1o to replace it but the AT1 has a special place in my heart and on my shelf

Oh that's a bummer. But if you have a hand-held light meter (or light meter smartphone app), then you could still use it.

Do you really need a light meter?

The Canon AT-1 is like a Canon FTb mark II... 😅

Absolutely yes. That's a pretty apt comparison.
