- Infinite Wealth takes one step forward and two steps back and undermines the series' storytelling strengths, but its incredible character moments and standout RPG systems shine.
On paper, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth has everything I could possibly ask for in a game from RGG Studio: Kasuga Ichiban from the 2020 RPG Yakuza: Like A Dragon co-leading with series legend Kazuma Kiryu-- two characters I love dearly fighting alongside one of the most memorable supporting casts in recent years. It's the best of both Yakuza worlds coming together for a story about life, legacy, and the daunting realities of the world we live in--but, more than anything, atonement and the various forms it can take. It also comes with greatly improved RPG systems that nail the tactical joy of turn-based combat while upholding Yakuza's identity in remarkable ways. And in splitting its time in Hawaii with Yokohama, you get two robust and detailed locations to explore new and old ideas through the biggest suite of side activities the series has had thus far.
For all its comedic absurdity and optional diversions, Infinite Wealth brings its heavier themes into focus--at times--with the kind of dramatic storytelling the franchise has mastered over the years. It's unfortunate to say, however, that the main story loses the thread along the way. By putting unearned emphasis on its least interesting aspects and meandering for much of its runtime, the compelling narrative ambitions it sets up are largely left unfulfilled. That's tough to grapple with for what's supposed to be a monumental passing of the torch between the two beloved leads and one last hurrah for one whose life we've seen unfold across nearly two decades' worth of games. And so, instead, Infinite Wealth becomes a game about individual moments--moments of bittersweet reflection, moments of heartfelt camaraderie, and moments of hype that uplift legendary characters even higher. These are moments that remind you the Yakuza franchise is much bigger than any one game. Even when Infinite Wealth's overarching plotline comes up short in crucial ways, those moments still make it worth playing.

Next month it is Persona 3 Reload and VII Rebirth which will probably be 90+ to. This truly might end up being the greatest year in video game history.
I'm so glad i invested time in the series and played all of the main games + gaiden, i am so ready for this game.
Don’t skip the judgement games + kaito files DLC they’re phenomenal.

This month was surprisingly full of great games.
a game cannot be great excluding female protagonist and other races from lead role. thats why most play mmorpgs instead. They let people be what they want to be. even Fortnite has diversity. most videogames cater to GamerGate misogynists and racists.

Ichiban just isn't the right replacement. The right replacement should have been Kiryu's adopted son or something.

I don’t see him as a replacement & I neither believe RGG wanted him as a replacement cause u simply can’t replace him it’s something new w new fightsystem born out of something we love to bits (me at least) that’s also why the new system didn’t bothered me. Maybe there will be some spin offs w Kiryu as Agent depending how his Story ends in LaDiW. Maybe the game will ad more rpg stuff. Hanging round w ur mates is for example very Persona-ish. It’s also possible that’s the story of the individuals in the group would get more into the focus instead only Ichiban. Now it’s time to get a cha and wait for what it will become. :)

I can’t wait to play this game! It’s shaping up to be a real masterpiece. RGG is one of my favorite studios in the world it’s just a shame they failed miserably when casting the insufferable and nauseating YongYea to play Kiryu in English. I loved Ichiban’s English voice in Yakuza 7 but this time I will be playing in Japanese for sure.

Got the digital deluxe. I’ve always been a fan of physical media, but there are more and more games going straight digital, I’m relegated to not actually owning them via digital purchase. What I don’t like the most is hearing about accounts being permanently banned with no reason or appeal and folks losing all of their games tied to their account.

I think 0 is the best but I loved kiwami 1 and 2 as well.
I just think kiryu is one of the best protagonists ever. And his story is pretty emotional and he's had a pretty rough life.
Both kiwami games are worth playing for sure. Especially kiwami 1. The gameplay isnt quite as good as yakuza 0 but the story is just amazing and its shorter as well.
I think it's mostly just important for understanding who kiryu is. He went to prison for 10 years. And his life completely changed unrecognisably while he was away.
I’ve played all of them and my favorites are probably 0 and Like A Dragon. Kiwami 2 is amazing too. One of my favorite game series and excited to start this ine.
got me recently 0 - 7 on PC played 0, 1,2,3,7 on PS before. Just loved it, I thought the change of the fighting system would bother me but surprisingly it didn´t at all
I played 0, a little bit of 1 and 2, and about 70% of like a dragon and 50% of lost judgement. Only game i finished was 0 lol
0, K1, LJ, K2, and Gaiden are my favorites
im now 100 hours gameplay , chapter 6, and 35% on story mode, 😆😆, it a great game

Supposed to have the song 'Ariamaru Tomi' (The Invaluable) by Shiina Ringo in the finale, right? Is it in the Japanese version only? It's such an incredible song, I have to say. The comments (in Japanese) underneath the official MV (th-cam.com/video/GvHmMv2JHDk/w-d-xo.html) tell so many different, incredible stories of what this song has meant to so many people, preventing them committing suicide, giving strength to face bullying, get through harassment at work, get over lost loved ones etc.

@@CC42_ Yeah any halfway decent game getting 9/10 even 10/10 these days from reviewers is crazy. I remember when 10/10 was reserved for the most groundbreaking experiences gaming had to offer now its anything goes. I'm a Yakuza fan but I can't even say the games are masterpieces especially the new ones that came after Yakuza 0 have either been underwhelming like Yakuza 6 and Gaiden or poorly paced in Like a Dragon and Infinite Wealth. Tbh Sega probably paid reviewers I know they paid streamers like XQC for sure.

Wow you're the only reviewer who has said that the story is weak... Everyone else calls it a masterpiece.
The story is longer than any previous Yakuza game but they did not make all that time worthwhile and left a lot of plot points to side quests or completely ignored and this is Kiryu's final game as well.
Go to the yakuza subreddit. Vast majority agree the main story is one of the weaker parts

You actually get and out of combat faster with the new turn based combat system, makes it easier to grind and it's suprisingly fast
Yeah they made improvements to the combat but I'd rather it just be action based with multiple styles like yakuza 0 or Lost Judgment. Turn based lengthened a lot of encounters when they only took 2-3 minutes in the action games. Its not really even good turn based strategy combat it pales in comparison to more dedicated games like fire emblem, xcom, or final fantasy tactics.
They seem to be stretching the stories thin now as well focusing on too many characters like who actually got good character development in Like a Dragon other than Nanba main story wise everybody else kinda just joins up, gives their initial motivation and leaves the rest for side quest that won't matter to the main story. Character development shouldn't be a side quest in a Yakuza game thats what makes these games look at Yakuza 4 they built up 3 new characters in Akiyama, Saejima, and Tanimura during main story and it was great when you hit the finale with them working together but fought their own battles and other issues themselves.

But I feel the Yakuza franchise really loses its magic with this JRPG system.
I thought it would only be in Y7 but they're really going with this for the long haul.
Also, Ichiban is an uninteresting character to me. Just not as epic as Kiryu, and I want to feel epic in games.
