In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Gordon Setter that you might not know.
    A Quick Overview:
    Group: Sporting Dogs
    Weight: 45 to 80 pounds
Height: 1 foot, 11 inches to 2 feet, 3 inches tall at the shoulder
    Life Expectancy: 10-12 years
Gordon Setters need a firm hand when it comes to training but not so firm that their sensitive spirit is damaged. Consistent, firm, fair training using the techniques of positive reinforcement will prevent them from becoming dominant, wilful, and stubborn. The mental activity provided by training will help keep them occupied and out of trouble.
Some Gordons can be aggressive toward other dogs, but it's not a common trait in the breed, and they should never be vicious. Toward strangers Gordons can be aloof, preferring the attention of their own people. They'll tolerate attention from strangers but don't actively seek it. To avoid any aggression or fear regarding strangers, it's important to socialize your Gordon Setter - expose him to a variety of people, sights, sounds, and situations - in puppyhood. A properly socialized Gordon is alert and fearless, an excellent watchdog.
The Gordon Setter is a loving companion and steady protector of the children in his life. Gordons are generally patient with children and tolerate much of their teasing and treatment, although of course, they shouldn't have to. It's always important to supervise interactions between children and dogs.
Known for their vocal skills, Gordons can be verbal in conveying their likes, dislikes, and other feelings. When they're provided with the attention and exercise they crave, they're loving, protective, and intensely devoted to their families.

I had to put my Gordan setter Tucker down about a month ago. They're such loving and affectionate animals. My dog did have horrible seperation anxiety. If he was left alone he would howl and howl. Otherwise, I never heard a peep from him. He only had issues with one other dog otherwise he had no issues with any other animals or people. I highly recommend this breed, Tucker was my best friend.

Don't know where you get your "facts" from, but one of the best things about setters is that they only bark when they have a good reason. Yes, especially the Gordon is alert and will watch strangers with some healthy carefulness. But nothing more. I really liked that about my Gordon. If she barked, I knew I had to check.
They are also perfectly happy to live in a small apartment close to their owner. If you have a dog like this, your home is just the "home base" for eating, sleeping etc. You should spend a lot of time outside and take your dog with you most of the time. It doesn't matter how big your house is. Dogs don't like to be left alone, especially hunting dogs. If you have a job where you can't take your dog along, you simply shouldn't get one.

Our Gordon loves other dogs and loves running. A very consistent approach to recall training is essential. Large garden/yard is essential. wouldn't be without one.

I don't agree with 2 points: 1) although they are known to be vocal, they do not bark a lot. They 'talk'.2) they are in general very friendly with other dogs, we go to a dog park twice a week and we have dogs visiting all the time. The gordons are friendly and playful. Yes, they talk! I've had two Gordons, one made it to 14 years, the other is 14 1/2. Both had bloat; caught it early, got surgery and they survived. Stubborn. When they learn something, they don't forget it. Great exercise companions - we've walked 2 miles daily for years. Mine were fast - if they get out of the yard, they run and run (beautiful yet terrifying). Do not get this breed if you're not up to giving them attention and exercise. And again, stubborn: They have nothing better to do than outlast you. And the coat: It will matt - you must brush it out out. These are wonderful dogs, but need responsible owners.

I had a Gordon as well. She behaved just like your dog. I would add though that my dog would eat anything. One day I left a frozen roast on the kitchen counter to thaw out. The dog grabbed it and ate the whole roast.

I share my house with one 7 year old Gordon and he is a great companion. This dog is a hunting machine. Birds around my area will literally let you step over them if they think you don't see them. I know this because my Gordon has found and pointed at the path people just walked on finding birds. Contrary to the video mine only barks when he wants to get my attention or he wants to scare someone away. Such as at the UPS guy. So he only ends up barking maybe once or twice a week. He is friendly to people he knows and he plays well with my cat. They definitely need a lot of room.
