    HI Zac, finished off watching this morning on replay. great tutorial video and thanks for the shout out at the beginning of the show. I'll now be keeping a book detailing amounts used as I have cast some stuff that turned out great but can't replicate as not sure exactly what went into the cast. Cheers, Huw

    New to channel but I think the word you had been looking for is 'folding' the resin. which is raising the mixing stick up. This is used in cooking to mix both an ingredient and AIR into a mix.

    Hi Zac - I’m assuming that you toss the mixing cup after you’re done mixing the resin.

    When working with concrete, we vibrate the air out of the mix. Can something similar be done with Resin/Silicone ??

  • @tedspens

    I haven't cast pinecones yet but I'm thinking pour directly on the pinecone to fill the voids, then turn it over and finish filling the mold.

    At 53:36 is the reason you poured the mixed resin and hardener in four different cups because of how many color your using or does it always have to be done with four cups? If so does that mean if you use 5 or 3 colors would you have to use 5 or 3 different evenly distributed cups at that time?

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's correct, each color is going to require it's own cup

    Zac - I want to stablize and color wood for segmented turning. My question is - what glue is recommended for stabilized wood? Epoxy, Titebond type wood glue or some some variety of CA?

    Thanks for the tutorial. You rock the resin world. Anyway I was wondering how many minutes of mixing the resins does it take for a good blend? Appreciate you from Tennessee

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Carmen! There isn't really a set amount of time to stir that will absolutely guarantee it is properly mixed and it will depend on the resin you are using too. Make sure there are no wispy trails or cloudiness in the resin, that will definitely indicate it is not mixed enough, once it clears up just give it a little more time to ensure a good mix

    I used Liquid Diamonds to make small things like keychains etc. I was going to do two different layers but after 34 hours the resin is still rubbery. What’s your opinion on this and why? Do I still just need to give it time?

  • @tomcowsert8962

    Fantastic tutorial, Zac! Thank you for this video! Quick question. Is silicone mold release needed with a silicone mold? I may have missed it but didn't see you use any. I am getting a cart together with turners warehouse of several mica powders, liquid diamond, and a silicone mold or two.
    Also, I don't have a workshop and it is cold in my garage. Is the liquid diamonds too toxic to use indoors in an unfinished room in my basement, about a 10'x12' room?
    What is the de-mold time in a silicone mold with Liquid Diamonds? And will Solar Color Dust work with Liquid Diamonds good without pressure?

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great questions Tom! As you saw, I didn't use any mold release, and it demolded fine. Mold release can prolong the life of the molds though, not a bad idea to pick up a can to have on hand if your castings seem to be sticking to the molds. Liquid Diamonds can definitely be used indoors, it has a low odor to it and is one of the safer resins to use. You always want to work in a well ventilated area though, not a bad idea to crack a window or turn a fan on to circulate that air. I believe the demold time for LD is 8-12 hours or so. It's a longer one, so you're best just leaving it overnight.
      Glad to hear you're jumping in!! Can't wait to see some of your creations 😀

      Zac Higgins thank you so very much for the response! I ordered a can of the mold release just in case. So, I ordered liquid diamonds, several mica powder colors, two different types of cups, etc... I took notes while watching. Hope it is all here before the weekend so I can cast something then! You are a great inspiration and a great guy for passing along your knowledge. Thank you, Zac!

    Question. Can I use eye shadow instead of mica powder?

    • @tamijansen8025
      @tamijansen8025 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. But always remember your ratios. Typically it should be 10% or less of the whole body or it can skew the formula. I have crushed up many broken eyeshadows and used them. Depending on the brand a lot on the market are pressed pigment. So the only difference is cosmetic pigment has been tested for allergens and to be skin safe. You will notice a lot of "eyeshadow " palettes can't be called eyeshadow palettes because they have so many pressed pigments. You'd also be interested to see that a lot of them say to avoid your eye area on the back in small print. They have to say this either because of the glitter in the formula (typically cosmetic glitter is more expensive and has rounded edges) if they want to go the cheaper route they just put a warning... to not put the "eyeshadow " on your eyes... or they put it because the pigment can stain your eye. Typically reds and pinks. Mainly vegan formulas stain as the the pigment is artificial. The Non vegan Red, pink and some blues contain a natural colorant made from cochineal beetles.
      So. Yes. You can use makeup. Sorry. My nerd is showing. Lol

    Cleanup bothers me with Epoxy resin because it can easily drip and you can get over-pour while doing things like this.. so I'd recommend using parchment paper as well. Not a criticism, just saying. Awesome pour technique and info though, enjoyed it, and prior to doing the flip poor I was wondering how you'd dump it all at once, lol.

    I might have missed it buy why did you go to liquid diamonds instead of Alumalite ? was it for Slow set or your new choice,

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alumilite requires pressure, it sets too fast for the bubbles to float out on their own

    • @kountryedge
      @kountryedge 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ZacHiggins And I just bought a gallon of Alumilite Amazing Epoxy!
      I have been looking all over the place for different resin epoxy, reading review after review, and Ive never heard of this brand...AND to just read that Alumilite requires a pressure canister to remove bubbles, is depressing.
      I'm just starting in this, wanted to buy the best as I can't afford waste by the items ending with a lot of bubbles. I'm needing to be able to sell my product to purchase more epoxy.
      Excuse me while I find a wall with a nail protruding out of it.
