@Self Motivator For example, all Google products that are free are free because Google makes a ton of money from selling user data and further using it to show us more enticing advertisements. There are some exceptions like FOSS but apart from that it's almost always true.
it means that you are the product being sold, for example, many apps are free and everyone can use them but in reality, the advertisers and CEO of those company make money because of your input. Let's say you are a normal user in Instagram and you happen to see an ad and got interested and ultimately decided to buy it. So you became a product of the advertiser. Instagram sold you to that company which you have seen the ad of.
This whole situation is scaring, SO MUCH SCARING. I’m 16 and I have passed my whole last year addicted by social media. I didn’t know what was wrong me, there was something that kept me apart from the life that I was living. Multiple times I tried to stop completely to use social media, but, for an addictive persone like me, it was pretty impossible. So I went every time less and less, from 4 hours per day to 2h, to 30 minutes. I noticed that the less time I spent on social media and the more I was happier and in peace. I started looking at people around me, and they looked like zombies, and I was SO TERRIFIED by the thing that I WAS EXACTLY LIKE THEM. Six months ago I deleted all my social media accounts, I couldn’t take a best decision in my life!
what worked for me was switching my phone from my galaxy s7 to a Nokia 3310 (the new one from 2017) for a month. i found it helped a lot with getting away from being beholden to my gps for directions as well, which helped redevelop my sense of direction. I'm back on an iphone 8 now, but the only apps i have installed are messengers and financial apps. getting away from the notifications should be the primary concern for taking back control over your attention span. good luck!
@Beige set a time limit on your phone for TH-cam specifically if you do that you will eventually be forced to use TH-cam more intentionally and your time will be better spent. I hope this helps :)
@Beige just click the "don't recommend this channel "or the "not interested button " on the videos that you are addicted to ...as the boy in the video said Then i think TH-cam will change into a place where you learn a lot from it (That if u have the intention to learn ) 😊
Please note that Andrew does not speak against the algorithm or usage of online content, but for an intentional use and curation of your consumption, strategic use of likes to take control of your mental ecosystem, as well as the intentional, occasional detox to clear yourself of inner junk that builds up. Like food, like exercise, it is about how you use it that will determine the quality of your life, the value you get and receive, as well as, ultimately, arguably, even the length of your life (e.g., stress ages & kills).
I remember when I was a child, I really enjoyed doing my homeworks, and was actually sad when I was finished because it was so much fun for me to learn new things and I had no better thing to do. Social media was not a thing yet and the best phone available on the market was the Nokia 3310. Even though I'm not against technological progress, I kinda miss those times sometimes. Anyway, it's time to use the algorithms instead of being used by it !
That’s the solution. Social media algorithms give us what they most think we want. If we want to waste our time with nonsense that’s what we’ll get but if we intentionally use these platforms only for things that add value to our lives the algorithm will feed us content that does that. It’s all up to the individual basically
@@Nik.No.K This is great simply just change who you follow if it dosen't help you mentally emotionally or physically it shouldn't be on your page that is what i do it helps you realign your focus on things that actually matter. I have also relapsed once. But i never relapsed after that ever again and just limit the time your on Social Media in general so check it in the morning before work not when you JUST wake up and at night if you want to post post but turn off notifications from people that don't inspire or add value to you so for me the only notifications that are on is people that are in my field ahead of me or someone that inspires me that's like 4 people or i look up to again 7 people. Don't like anything unless its adding value to you support your friends though
That is simply not possible for some people. I am a cs undergrad, and being in front of the screen is literally what I have to do for work. In fact, I aspire to be one of those engineers who design said algorithm. But in order for that to happen, I have to avoid the algorithm as much as possible. See the irony? It's complicated.
I tried to get into social media to try and build a large network like my mother has, but turns out she works 6-8h+ a day on maintaining that with endless rotating friends and keeping up with endless notifications, most of which are mind-numbingly dumb, boring or pointless. So did I not give the algorithm enough time or does it not apply to everyone? That I wonder, since I cannot even maintain a base-line interest to keep my family satisfied. Yet I can listen to youtube-video during a meal and type a 5m comment with no issues, then head out for a walk, do dishes and just cannot re-engage with it unless it's interactive, e.g. I'm learning something with a purpose. (Meal-vids are just information sticking from overconsumption or less value attached to it, like a select few fitness youtubers and Andrew.) It's all good since I piggyback of my mother, her second home is near where I live so if I make a post that I'd like seen by a lot of people, she'll simply share it. It's how I found a place to rent at the most impossible times, at an amazing location and price.
Playing the algorithm doesn't work, because this strategy happens on the conscious level, while the magic of the algorithm happens on the unconscious level. You just betraying yourself, have a good feeling, and got played more. If you think the videos you are watching have the label "value" instead the label "entertainment" (and I doubt that this differentiation can be made) then you just created an excuse for your addiction, the same way, every addicted person makes excuses. If you want to gain back control, you have to get offline. Learn to cope with boringness, go for walks, learn to focus on all your senses (smell, taste, audio, etc.) and embrace nature, meditate, etc. Emancipate you from the internet. Trying to play the algorithm is like trying to play your cult leader.
Cal Newport's book: "DEEP WORK" the whole book is about getting away from this stuff. You cant go into deep focus unless you learn to shut out a lot of things. I don't own a smart phone, not on facebook, instagram, twitter, any social media,I dont text people, I only talk to people face to face, I read more books from the library about educational topics, practice a hobby (play an instrument). I do get on TH-cam for educational topics like this but usually for only about an hour a day. The big thing i've learned to do is go into deep focus away from technology and read more books.
@@unknowninfinium4353 The point I was trying to make was about getting away from distractions that steal our time. In the book he talks about how much modern people can't go into deep focus because we get so distracted by all these things. I find it kind of annoying that these guys had a hand in starting this whole problem and are now telling us that we should stop using social media as if they never had anything to do with it all. It's like a person who started a fire with a flamethrower is now telling us to stop making it bigger by lighting matches.
We're halfway of becoming fully domesticated humans. We don't own anything ourselves, we're dependent on abstract systems and they shape our ability to reason and think to such an extent that even just mental autonomy is slowly becoming impossible.
That is truly reality we are moving towards to. There is no more pressure on owning a house, infact it is considered a liability not asset. If Uber succedes, drivless car will be the norm, owning the car will be again for the rich only. And right now, considering this video not even our time is ours. We spend it as algorithams present it. I can say for myself, I wanted to play some video games today after a long while. But instead here I am on youtube for 4 hours already. Yeah sure, listening to Michael Franzese mob stories is entertaining and quite educational. But it is not how I told myself that I wanted to spend my time today.
I find myself watching old shows I've watched on Netflix over and over again I've now seen the office 17 times Community 13 times and parks and rec around the same amount as well... the scary thing is is that they are starting to bore me. I find myself aimlessly searching for something new but nothing interest me. I feel like a zombie constantly searching but I never find anything so I just go back...

These past few years I’ve been addicted to using Instagram for memes and following models etc, and youtibe for videos, and 3 years ago I could easily spell words without thinking like a normal person.. But being so addicted I started to notice I would take 30 seconds to figure out how to spell a simple word such as “squeaky” not even lying. I was struggling to spell words I always knew how to spell. My brain is changing towards social media and instant gratification. I’m on social media for my own entertainment, I don’t post anything on ig nothin like that.. The social media curse is real.
Having watched TH-cam videos for over 15 years now I've never felt the need to comment on a video, but I have to commend how awe-inspired I am after watching this. Keep up the amazing work and you've just got yourself a new subscriber :)
This problem has been my concern for a long time, but I didn't speak much about it because I was afraid of being called a Luddite. The book "Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products" has a lot of information on this and breaks down how these algorithms are designed. These companies literally pay millions to "Attention Engineers" to keep us all hooked and addicted.
I hope there is a new digital detox series. I loved the dopamine detox series and the digital detox series is what is needed at a time like this. This documentary made me realise how much time I was wasting helping robots program me when I'm the programmer
Be aware that following one program after another may become another form of consumption or addiction replacement. The question may be: Do you need another detox program or just turn off your phone and other addictive activities - and detox.
I feel like this video is a breakthrough that can change our lives. All the things he is telling nobody tells us in school or in home by anyone. All the reasons and advice we get for help is so superficial that we are tired of Hearing them.
If someone would show me the time I spend on TH-cam in a month, I'd probably faint 😂 Tbh, TH-cam is the only social media I'm on now. No facebook, no instagram, just got off twitter. I'm never going to go back
Thank you so much for not only presenting the problem like so many do - including The social dilemma documentary itself - but also giving examples of how to solve the issue at hand. The only thing I didn't like about TSD is that 95% of it was “problem, problem, problem” and only at the end did they give a few ideas on how to solve the problem, by which point a lot of viewers were already feeling afraid and helpless. So, thanks again for not feeding into the fear and helplessness, but instead helping us feel proactive and giving practical solutions on what to do. Much appreciated.
Judgment day is everyday. But the machines take over, not through Terminators and physical violence, but through gradual elimination of your mind. Disconnect, detox and be conscious about when you are in and out of the Matrix - or be another puppet on the strings. The choice may be yours, if you are not programmed too much already to break free.
I find it kind of annoying that these guys had a hand in starting this whole problem and are now telling us that we should stop using social media as if they never had anything to do with it all.

I might be wrong but youtube doesn't recommend his videos or videos from education related channels. Like after watching a ton of videos from Khan academy, not even a single video, from their channel, was recommended to me.
I recently hung out with My Friends after months of being stuck in my home, having only social media, My family and school as companions. Can't describe the beautiful feeling of being with friends again, after so much lack of contact, it showed me how much of our needs get neglected in quarantine. I always feel lonely, only having a screen as a companion through my day, and I always start to wonder if this pandemic was planned (not saying it is, but shows how much corruption we are capable if). It's the perfect way to get people addicted to their phones, no physical contact, no normal school, no places to hang out, etc. We are now not only incentivised to look at a screen, we are FORCED to do so. I hope this whole thing ends soon
This video is amazing! Your channel is so educational and your ideas are life-changing. Thank you so much! Quitting social media was the best decision I’ve ever made! It improved my life on so many levels. I’ve begun reading more and also started journaling, two activities that also are changing my life! Also, quitting social media services improved my mental health, I’m no longer stressed and I’m more focused and enjoy the little things even more. It also made me more optimistic and more knowledgable about what I want to do in my life. Plus, it made me closer to my friends! I’ve also read Jaron Lanier’s amazing book on the subject: “Ten Arguments For Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now”. My advice to everyone, delete all your accounts, your life will really change for the better!
Thanks for sharing that. The video's only been out a few minutes and there's already been five people sharing positive experiences with deleting social media...
It was a wild experience to actually seeing these things brought to life in the mainstream. I'm not sure anything will actually come from this but I sure hope we start connecting with each other!
good to see that people recommend the thing i've been doing for about a year - having separate TH-cam accounts for different purposes. One day i just realized that it's really hard to click on an educational video that i need for work when there is so much entertainment stuff on my TH-cam home page. Also i've tried different accounts in separate browsers, but it doesn't work - i always end up with both browsers open and watching stuff on the entertainment account.
I've been doing the exact same thing, Andrew. One YT account for entertainment only, one for educational/self-improvement stuff, and the third for current events related content. Always do use the "not interested" and the "do not recommend this channel" options. Massively helpful to filter out junk for your recommendations.
Thank you for making this video Andrew it is much needed. I got off all forms of social media a few years ago and it was the absolute best decision I ever made. No more stress, anxiety, or unhappiness due to comparison of what I have and don’t. I felt free, as if I had broken through my mental shackles. I regained my self control and was able to finally have meaningful relationships once again. No more over stimulation of dopamine, I was once again living in the present moment. I recommend everyone to rid themselves of the beast if for personal use vs business use.
I can only imagine once they start inserting chips on people's brains, so they may see their social media in their visual field. I watched a TED show where someone excitedly was mentioned this future technology.
I believe that short attention span can also be resourceful for creative matters. Not going for an extreme limitation in one's individual and integral habilities. Everything processed in its right dosis, at the right place and time.
I find it kind of annoying that these guys had a hand in starting this whole problem and are now telling us that we should stop using social media as if they never had anything to do with it all.

@The alien in your backyard Example: TH-cam earns money from advertising. Companies pay TH-cam for putting ads on users videos (essentially making them the sales person). We in turn sees these ads that are ment to influence us in buying the product/service that the company offers. The takeaway is that TH-cam sells users "eyes" per say. The product itself thats advertised doesnt matter.

You are 100% correct that we need to have separate profiles for work and for entertainment. Otherwise the algo will mix both up. This is also a problem neurologically when work and entertainment is done in the same place, from the same computer. It's better to physically go to a different place where only work is done.

You're a genius dude. You're pragmatic and honest, and you cut straight through the bullshit, but to me the most impressive of your myriad of abilities is how you tell us that which is best for us and show us how you are part of that. Practice our attention span by sticking with longer clips, demonstrate our interests to the algorithm by positively interacting with your content, etc. It's brilliant marketing that unveils true value and entices us with it rather than what marketing is supposed to do, e.g. dangle shiny false idols in front of us.
Thank you so much for giving us inputs, on how we can deal with algorithms that are sucking our attention out of our brains. I watched the social dilemma a week ago and it feels like waking up from a nightmare. I deleted unnecessary apps, removed social media notifications on my phone and unfollowed around 500 instagram pages... I'm so scared of the future, because I don't know how we're going to change peoples minds in such a capitalistic and advertisement driven world... Knowing about the problem of social media is one thing...but have you taken action and done something for your mental health? Social media is not contributing anything good to peoples happiness in the long run... Thank you for this powerful video
Our brains give us a natural resistance to "difficult" tasks. We used to just sit and watch TV when we didn't want to think much about something, but social media became easier. It's always there in your hand, and you don't even have to think about what you read or engage if don't want to. Scrolling on social media during your spare time is the path of least resistance for the brain--so we choose it. Then add in the addictive components and the problem is compounded even further.
Confirmation bias is HUGE! I hadn't considered that social media might be behind why so many today seem to be unwilling to see the opposite side of an argument. (Also, having two TH-cam accounts is pretty genius.)

(Meal-vids are just information sticking from overconsumption or less value attached to it, like a select few fitness youtubers and Andrew.)
It's all good since I piggyback of my mother, her second home is near where I live so if I make a post that I'd like seen by a lot of people, she'll simply share it.
This book is the reason I deleted my social media accounts. It's a great read.
@@unknowninfinium4353 The point I was trying to make was about getting away from distractions that steal our time. In the book he talks about how much modern people can't go into deep focus because we get so distracted by all these things. "A goldfish has a longer attention span than a modern person" -Cal Newport.
I find it kind of annoying that these guys had a hand in starting this whole problem and are now telling us that we should stop using social media as if they never had anything to do with it all.

Have you tried Arrested development?

I love the Social Dilemma. It makes me suddenly aware of everything I used social media for
I hope there is a new digital detox series. I loved the dopamine detox series and the digital detox series is what is needed at a time like this. This documentary made me realise how much time I was wasting helping robots program me when I'm the programmer
Be aware that following one program after another may become another form of consumption or addiction replacement. The question may be: Do you need another detox program or just turn off your phone and other addictive activities - and detox.
your editing is insane. It hooks me onto your videos even more as of late
I feel like this video is a breakthrough that can change our lives. All the things he is telling nobody tells us in school or in home by anyone. All the reasons and advice we get for help is so superficial that we are tired of Hearing them.
If someone would show me the time I spend on TH-cam in a month, I'd probably faint 😂
Tbh, TH-cam is the only social media I'm on now. No facebook, no instagram, just got off twitter. I'm never going to go back
You can see how much time you spend on the last week in the youtube app when you tab at the top right corner.

You changed me life Andrew kirby
Thank you so much for not only presenting the problem like so many do - including The social dilemma documentary itself - but also giving examples of how to solve the issue at hand. The only thing I didn't like about TSD is that 95% of it was “problem, problem, problem” and only at the end did they give a few ideas on how to solve the problem, by which point a lot of viewers were already feeling afraid and helpless. So, thanks again for not feeding into the fear and helplessness, but instead helping us feel proactive and giving practical solutions on what to do. Much appreciated.
Elon Musk is right AI is dangerous. I just think people don't realized how subtle that danger could be and that it's already here.

Quitting social media was the best decision I’ve ever made! It improved my life on so many levels. I’ve begun reading more and also started journaling, two activities that also are changing my life! good to see that people recommend the thing i've been doing for about a year - having separate TH-cam accounts for different purposes.
One day i just realized that it's really hard to click on an educational video that i need for work when there is so much entertainment stuff on my TH-cam home page.
Also i've tried different accounts in separate browsers, but it doesn't work - i always end up with both browsers open and watching stuff on the entertainment account.
I feel tired of thinking right now.
Do you think soo much ?

I've been doing the exact same thing, Andrew. One YT account for entertainment only, one for educational/self-improvement stuff, and the third for current events related content.
Always do use the "not interested" and the "do not recommend this channel" options. Massively helpful to filter out junk for your recommendations.
As soon as I'm done watching your video, I'm heading over to watch the Netflix documentary.

The TH-cam algorithm recommended me this.
You are 100% correct that we need to have separate profiles for work and for entertainment. Otherwise the algo will mix both up. This is also a problem neurologically when work and entertainment is done in the same place, from the same computer. It's better to physically go to a different place where only work is done.

@@pushparahi5681 Not sure if I'm feeding the trolls here, but anyway.
It's an old map showing parts of Poland and Kaliningrad being part of Germany. This is therefore problematic because some far right wing tendencies in Germany claim that this should be Germany again. Practice our attention span by sticking with longer clips, demonstrate our interests to the algorithm by positively interacting with your content, etc. It's brilliant marketing that unveils true value and entices us with it rather than what marketing is supposed to do, e.g. dangle shiny false idols in front of us.
Really appreciate this comment!
there is nothing exposing to already known this. this is just an awareness for the lazy zombies 24/7 on social media.
I'm not having fun on social media. Why do I still use em?
It's the easiest and the fastest way that your brain think it will make you feel good (dopamine) for the moment
@Lucia Starkin aaa, maybe, probably
You are an npc, make sure you get back to your media routine. Don't ask questions that are not yours
Confirmation bias is HUGE! I hadn't considered that social media might be behind why so many today seem to be unwilling to see the opposite side of an argument.
(Also, having two TH-cam accounts is pretty genius.)
