My great uncle Hubert Dinwoodie commanded 5140 BD Squadron after working in BD at the Air Ministry throughout the war. He entered the Mittelwerk/Dora underground V2 factory with the US Army and assisted with the removal of the rockets in the weeks before the area was handed over to the Russians. In the British Zone post war, he was involved in the destruction of Luftwaffe munitions and much of it was demolished in situ, but most was taken up to Lubeck by train for transferring on to hopper barges for dumping in the Baltic. After a fatal accident involving unstable bombs being dropped on the dock, uncle and his assistants had to go in and make safe the train trucks full of bombs, and he was awarded the George Cross for this work. His photos are very interesting and include the "Herman Goering Wind Tunnel" as he calls it, the demolition of aircraft including FW190s and Mistels, and futuristic rockets along with the V1s and V2s they came across. In one letter to a colleague in England, he mentions that Customs are starting to take an interest in the flights that are bringing the material back to Farnborough, so if they question any of the tools, etc, being sent back for personal use, they must tell the customs men that they were bought in the area now behind Russian lines, and the paperwork is now out of reach!

My Dad, who was an aircraft engineer, once mentioned to me that at the close of war he was shipped off to Belgium in a landing craft on his way to interview German aircraft designers and engineers. I have his photos if you're interested.
