hello all~ I keep getting comments saying the N5 vocab Anki deck download link isn't there anymore, but it is!
if you go to the NihongoShark website, the link just now says "AnkiWeb's shared decks database" instead of "JLPT N5 Vocabulary Deck", then the download button is under the samples.
    happy studying!! 🥳🍥

Hey, i saw your comment and i wanted to give you some advice. Im a low intermediate in japanese and ive done maybe 80+ hours of research on how to learn a language and these are the steps you should take:
      1. Learn hiragana and katakana
      2. Basic grammar and 100+ vocab (from textbook or apps like duolingo)
      3. Just immerse in japanese content (anime, youtube, books, music etc.) And make sure to listen actively and with 100% focus. Trust the process and you will be fluent. Also i reccomend matt vs japans channel on this. Also, anki is a waste of time in my experience. Dont learn, aquire through immersion. Good luck dude!

I was indebted to you after just 2 minutes. Thank you, handsome man
I'm keeping a light record of my progress here, as this is the video that started it all. Hopefully it motivates someone to take the plunge.
    *Entry 1 - 12/11/2023*
(TLDR: Finished hiragana and katakana in 17 days with JapanesePod101 videos using mostly the Kana App and a few small writing drills.)
26/10/2023 Thursday night - Hiragana start
29/10/2023 Sunday morning - Hiragana finish
So a little over 3 days.
I planned from the start to take a short break before katakana, as I thought this would help with confusion between the alphabets, and so I did. I reviewed little hiragana in the run up to katakana.
    *2 day break*
01/11/2023 Wednesday night - Katakana start
11/11/2023 Saturday night - Katakana finish
So 10 days start through finish.
I felt drained during the early days of this time period. Perhaps my initial flame of motivation started reducing to embers after I took a break, but I don't regret my decision.
Looking back, my exercise book looks worse and lower effort now than when I started out with hiragana lol. Maybe my brain just got used to remembering stuff?
I waited until finishing katakana to resume practice with hiragana.
My method: Using JapanesePod101's videos, I used a pen and notepad to write the romaji and the character, then wrote character out for about 4 rows. I used 2 lines at once to make it easier.
The bulk of my time I spent in the Kana app, practicing the last 20 or so characters I learned at any given time, then doing a big review later on. I used the "hard" setting for reading and writing, so I had to remember how to write each one. If I didn't know *or* got it wrong, I made sure not to accidentally mark my answer as correct out of habit (my writing score tended to be about 90%)
Now I'm just over 17 days in, I've started to read Tae Kim's guide and I'm about to watch a video right this second on optimising Anki's settings for my Japanese learning.
I easily found some N5 decks and imported one, so starting out shouldn't be such a hassle I hope.
It's a good outlook, and the forecast is sunny with some light drizzle (Not literally)
    *Note - 09/04/2024*
    Started sentence mining
I have read the Basic and Essential Grammar sections of Tae Kim's guide, and have "learnt":
    700+ vocab
    200+ kanji
    *Note - 12/04/2024*
    "Finished" N5 deck
Reached end of N5 deck (654 cards), doing my first review on the last remaining new card in the deck. So 4.3 new cards a day on average over 153 days (starting 12/11/2023)

It looks like the deck he showed in the video has been lost, are you willing to share some of the decks you found?

    • @blubber0_0
      @blubber0_0 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@StepRBX Same here. I found presumably the same deck in the first few results on a google search. It has audio (sound quality was meh, but better than nothing) for each word and an example sentence, and the card type is literally named after nihongoshark.
I also found one with anime plastered all over it (always good), and decent audio from a site called Jlab (Japanese like a breeze), which follows the order of Tae Kim’s guide. It’s more convenient to use the recommended Anki add-on for this deck so it’s up to you.
I doubt I can link them here, good luck.
Unnecessary answer but I feel like it so: I’m also currently adding words I come across in my immersion to my own separate deck, along with the vocab in Tae Kim’s guide, in the most basic card format with a basic one or two word definition for most vocab. People probably stress about good cards too much I’d assume.
I’m also suspending/deleting cards for words that I recognise instantly or that are obviously extremely commonly used. My current approach is to focus more on listening (me regurgitating Jlab’s approach like), so I just read the hiragana and don’t worry too much about the Kanji, but everyone works differently I guess. I could record my own audio and probably will in future but I’m lazy lol, and practicing reading hiragana can’t be that bad. I’m doing 5 new per day in the N5 deck, 8 per day in the Anime deck, and adding on average 7 per day to my deck from immersion. But of course, I’m currently suspending/deleting words I don’t expect to need to supplement the frequency of appearance of. Not too many though, since I’m still just starting to build up my vocab as a beginner.
Japanese will be my second language besides English so feel free to ignore my approach and do whatever you want to do lol. And good luck everyone 💜

I've always had interest in learning languages, I've been studying French for the past 3 years and I'm upset to see that I've done my finals and I don't have an excuse to learn it anymore.
I thought about continuing with French but I've decided to start learning Japanese instead. About 5 years ago, I tried (failed) and gave up pretty quickly, I also consume a LOT of Japanese media - mainly things that are vocoloid related. I also would like to travel to Japan one day and not be a lost tourist.
I've recently started learning Katagana and it's pretty exciting to begin recognising characters in Japanese writing. Since I knew that I wanted to take it seriously, I was thinking abojt where to start and was pretty lost so thank you for this video, it's been helpful! :D

I started learning 日本語 during winter vacations on the pandemic.
I like to learn new languages, and with the years I've learnt english to the point I could have some conversations with natives in my country.
With japanese, I started out as a hobby, but being a huge enjoyer of manga and anime my curiosity took over and it turned into something serious, a goal. I begun using Duolingo and quickly discovered the powers of Anki, but after some time I kinda plateaued and got bored, so I stopped.
Recently I picked it up again, although in a relaxed fashion like at the beginning, because I have college and other stuff going on, but still with that long term goal of reaching some level of fluency and being able to hold normal conversations in japanese.
I've been like 2 weeks in and right when I was starting to get stuck again I started wondering if relying only in Duolingo was a good way to go, so this video is a GEM to me! So, thank you so much!

Great job studying japanese for 5 months already, and knowing 30+ kanji already is amazing!! 🎉👏 i think that you being so young is actually and advantage - i think you’ll be able to learn new concepts faster than adults! Just stay patient and keep working hard, and you’ll see amazing results. Keep it up!! 🥳
