I grew up in Mentor, Ohio. I pass this almost daily and toured it dozens of times. We know it by it's name "Lawnfield". It was closed in the 1990's when the National Park took over and did a six year $12.5 million dollar meticulous restoration. His library became the first Presidential Library established in the U.S.
I love the walk in safe and the snuggery. What unique ideas ahead of their time. What could Pres. Garfield accomplished if he had completed his presidency? Thanks for bringing this wonderful house to us.
A question we ask about him, Lincoln, and Kennedy.
All of those focused on Country and People seem to be targeted and the excuses accepted ...
Look deeper.
"Federal Reserve Bank Corporation" (private family owners) were/are the power behind these losses.
Oh, that library 💓💓💓
I grew up in NE Ohio near Mentor. During my school years, the Garfield House was often an end of (school) year outing. After I moved away I recall hearing about repainting the house to period correct colors instead of plain white. It caused quite a stir. Next time I travel 'home' I would like to look at it again with more appreciative grown eyes.
I visited in October 2000 and the house was still white with black trim. It looks much better now with period colors
Thank you for including that excellent concise history with that beautiful house. I am thankful to everyone who worked on the restoration.
What a beautiful home! Even with the massive additions it stayed cohesive. Just think if Garfield had lived his entire presidency how things may have progressed sooner. Great information.
Loved the staircase behind the fireplace and the blue tile fireplace in the snuggery. Parts of the exterior, reminded me of Teddy Roosevelt's Sagamore Hill. Garfield was a Good man.
My favorite "rooms" : the water and gas systems. Science teacher here. His ideas for sustainability were certainly ahead of the times.
I absolutely love the house and grounds. One of my favorites so far. The library is stunning. Such artistry in all the details. A very livable house. Thanks for the history as well. 😊
I wouldn't live in a sterile, mass-produced shoebox in Manhattan if I could live afford to build and live somewhere like Garf's place. I think it's a sign of civilizational regression that modern wealthy people choose to do so as often as they do. Things are too easy; tastes are too cheap.
The library was my favorite. I’ve driven past this home but did not have time to visit. I’m going to have to tour this one.
He and Lincoln were my heros. His suffering at the hands of his assassin was so dreadful, it brings tears to my eyes even now. He lingered for days while his ignorant doctors did their best to abuse him. Only his death brought him relief.
I've been to Garfield's home. My brother lives nearby. It is a beautiful house! I grew up a couple blocks away from Spiegel Grove which is president Hayes' estate and home. The grounds are beautiful and I walk the trails there frequently. Would love for you to visit!
I live in Mentor!!! I have always loved this house!! In the early 80s I went to James A. Garfield Elementary School!! They tore it down a loooooong time ago!! Now I drive Uber Eats & I drive right by his house 20 times a day! I'm always looking at the windows for ghosts!! Haven't seen 1 yet!! 😜
I like the library. However, it has been quite a few years since I visited. Of course, if the doctors hadn't stuck their dirty fingers in his back looking for the bullet, he probably would have lived as he didn't die of the wound but the sepsis most likely caused by those fingers. Excellent video.
I love that you said, "Hook a right." I haven't heard, "Hook a right, Hang a right or Bang a right" in years!
I really like the campaign building with its tall glassed-in bookshelves. This is a great 19th-century house with such an interesting story, thank you, as always, for bringing it to life!
I love the idea of the water and gas system setups and a self-sustaining property.
By the way, you could narrate meditations or bedtime stories. You have such a soothing voice!
What a gorgeous estate! I love that the workmanship was elaborate without being over the top. Simple elegance. My favorite is the Snuggery. I could go for one of those in my house. I didn't know much of Garfield's history, and now have a great respect for him thanks to your video. Thank you, Ken!
The library is by far my favorite room in the house. The woodwork is absolutely incredible.
A great, great citizen, soldier and president.
Loved this one!! I always love watching/learning about President’s historic homes. I didn’t know but conclude that Garfield was VERY forward thinking and loved the house.
Your channel has fast become a favorite! As a History freak, I’m so fortunate to have your interesting, historic, fact based videos at my fingertips. I thank you! Interestingly, the man who became President after Garfield’s untimely assassination, Chester Arthur, is buried here in Albany, NY. Fascinating period in History.
The library is my fave. What an interesting story, definitely a man ahead of his time ❤
Ken!! Cleveland area again!! I live in Mentor, Garfield's home is gorgeous. Lots of events there. I like to walk the grounds oj my lunch break. Love your channel!!
My mother and I visited the site a few years ago and we loved it! I fell in love with the library because I am a total book nerd. I dream of having a room that size in my house for nothing but my books.
Such a shame; I had no idea he so progressive for his time.
I understand typos but I see this everyday. Lear to read/write
Indeed. Student’s should learn about his short lived Presidency and his goals.
@@chadcramer4024 Lear?
Fabulous free tour. Don't miss it if you are in the area.
It would be hard to pick just one room. It is a beautiful house, love all the wood. I never knew much about Garfield, he sounds like an impressive man. Too bad about the federal funding for public schools. I’m sure his heart was in the right place.
The snuggery ❤
The library!
Fantastic tour. I've been all through this house... Amazingly well-preserved, and stunning on a fall day. It's worth the trip to Mentor.
Garfield still lives with his owner Jon, and picks on Jon's dog Odie alot. He loves lasagna and hates Mondays.
The coffered ceilings in the library are gorgeous! Also the well and indoor plumbing system are really fascinating. ❤ Interesting history, great video! 😊
Why not show the kitchen ugggg otherwise a great video
Beautiful home! I toured this one a couple years ago in the Cleveland suburb of Mentor, Garfield was perhaps among the most intellectual presidents of all time
Been here three times, and hope to see it next year.
Snuggery sounds much better than man cave!
It's a lovely home.
The dining room was beautiful. Fantastic woodworking in the house. He was so far ahead of his time.
I went to elementary school in Mentor but never got to tour this! Fun to see it here on your channel!
Very good report. Thank you.
Can you feature castles from around the world. Also, penthouses in New York City.
An amazing house, an amazing man, a tragic story. We've progressed so far, yet now could easily lose it all.
Garfield's house is almost indentical to my wife's house right down to the snuggary, except in her house the library is on the first floor, it has a triple brick exterior and the walkin safe is more of an armory room. My favourate room in any house is the library. Something very special about curling up in a warm blanket and a hot cup of tea with your favourite book or to just check emails on your laptop.
Perfect projection of a man to do positive things for not only his family’s well being but was elevated to office, always a hard worker to accomplish great goals,a very good president. But unfortunately it took one angry jealous man to shatter Garfield’s dreams. A disgruntled evil man that could’ve done something else positive even some where else. Glad that medical procedures have improved but losing Garfield was a tragedy, but the home he built was perfect for his family, and chose a way to be self sufficient, completely!
That was excellent, 8 minutes of history and a beautiful house thank you, we need more people like you guys making video like this, thanks again.
I love this house
Would love to see the kitchen and the bathrooms…if they had them.
You forgot to mention Louis Comfort Tiffany designed the chapel interior.
Thank you for spelling out the policies of this man. I'd heard repeatedly of the unnecessarily horrible way he died, but had never heard or read about his political views. Great job!
Now I want a snuggery….
You should do one on Scarlet Oaks, The George K. Shoenberger mansion in Cincinnati Ohio it’s incredible very intact and in the same neighborhood is The Windings Mansion Bishop’s Place and Probosco House a wonderful book to provide information on these houses is by Professor Walter Langsam and it’s called great houses of the queen city
Thanks!
Thank you so much for the Super Thanks! Cheers!
-Ken
Beautiful
A very interesting and educational video! And also a lovely house 🏠 😊 😍
There is some basis for the contention that if they’d just left the bullet alone he would have recovered and healed, but all the poking around trying to find the was what actually killed him.
Thank you. that was so interesting! I'm an old hippie chick from Western Colorado and have lived with a beautiful butte type mountain designated Mount Garfield in 1883. I will appreciate the view even more now that I know the background. The house was splendid however, the wallpaper on the ceilings was pretty busy. Was that a fashion statement or was there a practical aspect?
You should do the Steel Mansion. It’s only 6 1/2 miles from the Garfield Mansion. It has a rich, interesting history. You can even stay there.
Sad ending to a good man. Was there any guards or serviceman to protect him at the time?
I liked that the home wasn't too ostentatious, even though it was large. It looks like a family home. Another beautiful library! I notice the wood is lighter than what is often used. I wonder what kind it is. Restoration normally removes old shellac that has turned dark. It was interesting to learn he was so progressive. My maternal grandfather was from Ohio.
Read Candace Millard's biography of Garfield: 'The Destiny of the Republic'. It is very sad but wonderful!
Maybe it actually is simply: 'Destiny of the Republic'. But it truly is the best possible account.
When someone uses violence to achieve any end we ALL suffer and are set back from the good things that could have been. He sounds as though he was a wonderful human being and President with his efforts firmly set for the American people. It must have been TERRIBLE for his family and the country. I like the upstairs library his wife built and the safe room. I think the gas and water facilities were simply amazing for the time. He could have done the country so much good….
a toss up between the snuggery (every home needs one!) or the verandas . . . most likely the verandas, if they count as a room. I've often said my veranda is my favourite room on my house.
❤ your channel. What State is this in?
Ohio
@@debbieburris9453 thank you
@@Lili-xq9sn No problem, I'm from Ohio
GO BUCKEYES ❤️🩶❤️🩶
Garfield also served as a Gospel preacher in Disciples of Christ congregations. If i recall, when he decided to run for President (or after he was elected), he told his congregation that he was stepping down from the pulpit to become President. He was apparently a very intelligent man, and could read and write Greek and Hebrew. I think he even could write with both hands at the same time. Even more, he appointed Lew Wallace to an ambassadorship because he wrote "Ben Hur". 😅. My father had several biographies of Garfield and wished more people knew about him, as he had all the markings of becoming a great President. Sadly, a nut with a gun ruined it all.
❤
Wonderful house. Love the self-sustaining features. I think every house should have a snuggery.
😎😎😎😎😎
This house seems 20 years NEWER than it "should". The Exterior seems so 1905! P.S. Pittsburgh's Garfield neighborhood is named for the President. When the are was laid out in lots, The first buyer bought his lot the same day Garfield was laid to rest!
So it was Garfield that truly attempted to turn this country from the tides of slavery..(Lincoln,and Kennedy get all the credits..) Garfield and his life needs to be told showed with pictures to more ppl, continuously so the msg gets to everyone.
Garfield won his brigadier star at the Battle of Middle Creek in Eastern KY, about ten miles from where I write this.
When does the self-sustaining part come in? Also, you said there'd be more about the library Mrs. Garfield built later, and you never mentioned it again. The bedrooms were my favorite. Too much wood in the rest of the house
I don’t know, it sort-of feels like, instead of giving off about the information this guy provided to you for free, you do your own research?!
@@rainbowsandlove That's right, I can look up all the information I want. The point of my comment was that the information advertised in the title wasn't exactly what was presented. This is a frequent click-bait issue on youtube. I enjoyed this video despite not getting what I expected from it.
Wow! America's first off-grid luxury mansion with amenities. Very modern thinker; this President Garfield. My friend said if alive today he would be considered "woke". There was nothing but surprises and revelations galore on this video. Cheers and thank you. Enjoyed it.
You never show off the outhouses the staff used. Please show off these vital structures that America was built on.
The library
Its a shame that London killed him.
Ps that fire stove looks incredibly sketchy directly under the lower part of the stairs.
Check on imminent vs eminent.
His entire life sounds sketchy
What a cool guy....Buuuut, 'Equal Rights' are not in the Bible, thats why he was such a breath of fresh air for the times........ And the USA was occupied by people that followed the Bible.... It says in the Bible.... "Black and White shall live next to each other but must not mix" Most Christians pass this part up... But that why if you are white and grow up in a mixed/black neighborhood, the African Americans will repeat the same verse. Any written book of religion separates the people, period.
And was he pulling a boat down a canal? The same system they blew up and lie about yeah
Oh yeah poor… weren’t they all so poor but went to college. Lies
