    Am I the only one that gets nervous when it comes to working on bikes? Irrational fear of breaking something I guess

    • @Duraltia
      @Duraltia 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      My old bike snapped in half after 7+ years and of the current selection the Manufacturer was offering I couldn't find one that had both the looks and parts I'd have liked so, in the end, I got myself a midrange model that had the looks and upgraded it from a Deore / Deore XT model to a balls to the wall XTR / XTR Di2 / iRD one.
      Never before replaced anything else on a bike except for the handlebars and maybe a tire - Rebuilding that bike with all the parts in more or less one go was nerve wrecking especially because of the internal routing the frame has requiring some generous rethinking on how to feed cables to certain areas.

    How to set up a coil shock please

    • @rogerneilson815
      @rogerneilson815 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Preload is really the only difference, since coils are linear spring rate the end of the stroke is not affected. preload stiffens the beginning the most and mid by half of what happened to the beginning, if that makes any sense. it's still linear, just starts stiffer when u tighten the spring.
      Compression and rebound settings will basically be the same, start with a mid point on each and adjust incrementally from there until you find what u like. Remember each trail needs different settings, there's no perfect set it and forget it for every trail

    • @rohinbakrania347
      @rohinbakrania347 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roger Neilson thanks, I understand most of what your saying, it's just that im not sure what to look for with those incremental changes, mainly with the low/high speed compression

    • @hobmarg
      @hobmarg 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As he said, compression and rebound are the same as an air sprung shock. Lookup the Vorsprung Suspension Tuesday Tune videos on TH-cam or Pinkbike if you want to spend a few hours learning about what the damping circuits do and how to set them up. Warning: this is a deep dark hole :)

    Hello. I wonder if it possible to use rc car shock silicone oil on the foam rings and as a bath oil for lubrication inside the mtb fork? It is pure silicone oil with different viscosity from 10w to 100k w. It works well in rc car shocks with anodized aluminum bodies and rubber and silicone o-rings and membranes so i think it should work fine with suspension fork too?

  • @carlomagnotm
    @carlomagnotm 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Erwin Meulman ohhh leftys nice,tbh those are made by fox so pretty much they're reliable,since under that rubber dust boot there's a square stanchion it has needle bearing in every face of that stanchion so good grease is needed such as royal purple synth high performance grease,just a rag clean of everything and re apply this grease,now the rebound part and such umm I didn't got that far in videos cuz usually that's straight shop work more than a user job

    All these fork maintaining videos you've uploaded have made me wonder, how do I know when my fork needs to be serviced? I have the tools and the knowledge. I just need to know what signs to look for that say "fix it"

    • @chadashton7029
      @chadashton7029 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah...I want to know this too. Do we just drop the lower every couple weeks or after a certain number of rides or mileage and check?

    • @GrimYak
      @GrimYak 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chad Ashton its based on the hours. Fox recommends 100 hours or 1 year whichever comes first

    • @chadashton7029
      @chadashton7029 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gotcha. Thanks for the info. Now that you mention...I do remember reading something about 1000 hours. Do the forks generally not dry out during that time? I guess it would depend on conditions as much as anything. I don't live or ride in a particularly dry area so it probably wouldn't be an issue for me...but I'd image someone that rides out west might need to check more often. Or maybe not...lol...I'm a rigid guy at the moment and have been for a while. But I'm in the market for a hardtail or full suspension bike as my older body is taking a beating and starting to feel the effects of riding with no suspension.

    • @globetlottel
      @globetlottel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chad Ashton, just to give a negative example, I never serviced my rockshox but always kept the tubes clean. Last week after >10 years of semi-frequent use it suddenly stuck completely. I opened it up only to find all oil had gone. The anodizing around the bushings is scratched.Kind of a facepalm moment, as there had been warning signs one year before (sticky remains of oil on the tubes after riding). Didn't do anything about it except for being impressed how great the fork had been holding up over the years, duh.

  • @GNX157

  • @The.JZA.
    @The.JZA. 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wipe my suspension down after every ride with a clean rag with a bit of silicone suspension spray on the rag itself. Should I ditch the silicone spray and just wipe with a dry rag or is silicone alright? I only spray a small amount on the rag so the suspension is not wet after wiping.

    • @gmbn
      @gmbn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that'll be fine Jaisah! You want to spray it on the rag and wipe so as not to overspray onto a disc brake. The main problems arise when people douse heavier greases and sprays on there which causes dirt to stick to the stanchion and seal

  • @Hawlkeye-e9p
    @Hawlkeye-e9p 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Clean the seals, put a few drops of lower oil on the stanchions and pump it 4 times. Rinse repeat till no more debris comes out.

      I agree, I live in Malawi - No bike shops apart from 1 dodgy one. I'd love to have one on my fork because parts are only available by post. It would probably allow the fork to last longer as no dust is exposed to stanchions and seals, internals too. The main reason for oil changes is contamination from dirt. It makes sense to have boots on stanchions, it would also stop scratches

    • @p4inmaker
      @p4inmaker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The nastiness will get inside anyways, causing even more scraping.

    • @p4inmaker

      Dust gets in everywhere, even through the tightest seals. There's a reason modern mountainbike forks don't have sleeves on the stanchions.

    • @gmbn
      @gmbn  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your stanchions are 'running dry' it's because the wiper seal and foam ring inside the fork aren't lubricated enough, therefore your lowers need a top up of oil! Don't lubricate the stanchion with an oil or lube as this inevitably be too much and will attract dust and grit which will damage the stanchion and eat through the wiper seal in no time at all!

    Basic maintenance? So nothing about lubing the stanchion tubes? Just replace the seals when they dry out from lack of basic maintenance? Weird. I

    Everything functions properly th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of TH-cam. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!
