visionary at times. when morrison was earnest & his heart was right, his lyrics could tap into the cyclical & eternal.... loved how he used blake symbolist technique. succinct dense word images/metaphors. inconsistent so he doesnt get his due... but I will always stand up for his best stuff. when he got it right, the guy had a staggering talent and vision. wide scape, epic poet stuff. whitman & blake come to mind..... ck out waiting for the sun. its honest but also hopeful.

This song is the final song on their first album, which I call their "acid trip opera". Jim Morrison told Ray Manzarek that he had tripped on acid and saw "a whole concert in my head," with complete songs, lyrics and everything. That batch of songs went on their first album, with a couple of them landing on the second album. He never really did much in the way of drugs after that, sticking mostly with drinking. But his image as the dark psychedelic messiah was cemented by that first amazing bout of phantasmic revelation. :)

HazeBruv: I got Doors stories for you fa days because I lived in LA & saw them live many times. omg omg omg omg. Ya got it dang straight that people lost their minds when we first heard this music. The album "The Doors" was released to massive reaction from fans & critics.. Now considered the greatest debut album of all time by any band in any genre. The End was like nothing heard before or since. The Doors were absolutely unique. I knew it as a teenager when I lived in Connecticut & used to sneak out to New York w underage girlfriends to go to clubs & we found the Doors at Club Ondine in Manhattan where the Doors were the house band. Jim Morrison was so shy back then he sang with his back to the audience. I convinced my father to hire them for my sister's homecoming queen dance at an all girls school in Connecticut in the spring of 1967. The contract was signed in Dec. & they were booked for June for $500. By the time June rolled around Light My Fire was in heavy rotation on all radio stations all over the USA. I told my parents I was certain the Doors would not show up for the gig. The band honored the contract. Jim came in swinging on a rope from the stage curtains like Tarzan. Stole the homecoming queen's crown off her head & rolled around on the floor banging the gymnasium wood floor w the mike while he screamed the lyrics for "The End". I could go on. Too awesome.

Jim Morrison is buried in Paris. Much to the annoyance of many French people, his grave is the most popular tourist destination in Paris. For many years it was traditional to leave as offering on his grave: Dead flowers and empty liquor bottles. For several years now, women's panties has been an additional offering.
Back in 1998, I read an article that said neighbors of the graveyard where he is buried were so annoyed by the wild late-night parties that fans would throw in the cemetery that some of them were agitating to have his body moved somewhere else. The guy who wrote the article remarked that what other celebrity could complete with that for being a party animal? Jim Morrison's neighbors wanted to evict him for his wild parties--and he had been dead for 27 years. Now that's a party animal.

Oh man, I swear Haze listens to me. But what he's probably doing is listening to all of us. I don't know if this song will make him giggle, but it will bug him out. Weird song, one of a kind.
EDIT: Haze got it good. It's a vibe. This song is more like taking a little trip. To me it's like beat poetry amped up. Some of it is dated, like the 'Blue Bus' acid test. But this song is trippy and might have been inspired by LSD. I think everyone remembers where they were when they first heard this song. It makes that much of an impact. You did good Haze.

Better as an overall song. The End had considerable shock value though.

hard call. cant say one is better then the other b/c the go different directions. WTMO is more succinct & structured composition wise.... the end is more free form jazz structure. its also lyrically & singing wise more beautiful yet dark.... both masterpieces. I dont get why the doors arent placed higher. youd be surprised how many haters there are out there listener wise & even peers in the industry.

The End was released in January '67 .......way ahead of it's time! UK band the Stranglers were often (and wrongly) compared to the Doors but check out their 8 minute epic Down In The Sewer from 1977......in my opinion the best song ever recorded full stop!

amazingly this was crafted & produced in mid thru late '66.... the doors were an amer quantum leap when they entered the scene. velvet undergrd & floyd deserve their due too in that period, but wow, the doors not only pushed the envelope, but they had major talent via each member. composition & performance wise a very potent amer product in their day.
