J’ay si grant doeul et peine doloreuse Qu’on me verra brief mes jours deffiner. J’ai si grand deuil et peine douloureuse qu’on me verra vite mourir. English: A thousand regrets for abandoning you and being away from your loving face. I have so much mourning and painful grief that I will soon be seen dying.
On top of the incredible technical and musical skills on display, it's an amazing bonus for the viewers that you achieved a real Chiaroscuro aesthetic with the lighting. I mean, you look like an actual Caravaggio Renaissance painting.
Ms. Roux communicates the grief of deep regret in a sublime way. You get the full effect during her pause after it ends. I love that. Silence is to music as a frame is to a painting. It’s the moment where you can feel what happened to you while listening to it.
For those who might be wondering, what Ms. Roux is doing is very difficult because she is in fact playing two instruments at the same time, both of which require concentration and control. Her beautiful rendition of "Mille Regretz" (or the "Song of the Emperor" as it is sometimes called) is like a swan: swimming gracefully and serenely, while no one suspects the efforts being made below the surface!
I regret abandoning you a thousand times Pushing myself far from your loving face I've such sorrow and pain for these, my crimes, You'll see my time is short within life's space.
Mille merci.
This is wonderful in so many ways! Please keep on recording more of this stuff. May I even utter a wish? Please have a look at "Hortum musarum" (Phalese, Louvain 1553), which contains many intavolations in exactly the same style (for soprano plus a lute intavolation of the bottom parts), among others "Je ne desire que la mort" (fol. C. v),
Incredible and lamented music - it encapsulates all that a person can do in regards to the beautification of humanity. Lovely work, Miss. A true inspiration. Best regards from California and happy Lute-ing 😀
I was at your performance in the "Fundatie" Utrecht (NL) yesterday where you performed this piece. Bravo what a performance. Visually stunning. Your voice combining beautifully with the lute, tender, vulnerable. Bravo. Merci. Merci Bien.
I'm spellbound! Absolutely captured! I'm glad I survived Covid just so I could discover this video. My god she heaven sent.... astonishing. Beautiful is putting it mildly. There are no words... ...this is a pure treasure.
Not sure the vocal term for it but I love the way you put a bit of subtle diaphragm supported pressure and open up the throat for that breathy last note. Really beautifully performed. Hope you do more videos in future!

Qu’on me verra brief mes jours deffiner.

qu’on me verra vite mourir.

A thousand regrets for abandoning you
and being away from your loving face.
I have so much mourning and painful grief
that I will soon be seen dying.
Kills me every time
I've always loved this song. A very beautiful recording of it. I think I fell in love a little bit.
This is incredibly beautiful - visually and aurally. Like a Caravaggio painting that sings.
Thank you, Emma-Lisa!

Playing and singing at the same time is so challenging. You make it look so easy. This is such a classic of the renaissance repertoire. Well done!
Being a crow, mainle capable of death metal grunt, your singing reminds me of all the beauty that still exists and long for it. Thank you!
Just. Stunning. The performance, the visuals with the lightnings. Lovely accompaniment.
If angels can sing it will be as this song. Bravo!
