A saw in another video discussing backlogs that offered an excellent suggestion: Tie your backlog to a gaming fund. For every game on your backlog you finish, give yourself $5. As you build up enough "credit," then you can get a new game and add it to the backlog. It forces you to be more selective about the games you buy (sales included) and makes you prioritize playing the games you have first. It helps give you something to look forward to, where completing games leads directly to new ones rather than a checklist for the sake of it.
I blame the advent of digital libraries. When shit was all physical, i would cherish about 3-5 games at a time, and sell off or borrow the ones i was done with. It made me consume less at a slower pace. But now its like "heres 12 games for $20", or "remember that game the internet wouldnt shut up about 5 years ago? well its 2 bucks now, buy it, coward". Knowing damn well its a walking simulator that will bore the shit outta me...but its $2! Theres no way i'll finish my backlog without no lifing it, including quitting my job, having no relationships, consuming no other forms of media, buying no more games from this point, and not playing any live service games. And only then, i might finish my backlog by the time i'm 80. Theres just too many games.
The only way I found to not make the backlog grow, is to just buy one game at a time and immediately play it. That and also realising that it's completely fine not to finish games if I'm not into them after I started playing. That helped thinning my backlog down a bit. Unfortunately bundles are a thing and I don't see my backlog ever going down to 0. Which honestly I don't really even mind at this point, I just know that I will never run out of new games (new for me) which sounds good.
What works for me: - Play one game at a time. - Have a main platform. (PS for me) - Have a clear objetive (beat, platinum) - Drop live services when starts to feel like a job or you achieved your objectives. - Never repeat a genre between games to avoid burnout.
First one is good but going to more games at the time might actually help it because it prevents burnout, second isn't great if you're a collector like me because I have too many consoles fron Megadrive to Nintendo Switch and for the last one if those games are similar maybe but not doing the first one might help and also when you play the next game in the series sometimes is so fresh it won't, for example it happened to me with Demon's Souls to Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 to Bloodborne
@@placekpie i agree with you, but for me, when i'm playing 3 - 5 games at the same time, i end up not finishing anything, but when i'm playing just one or two games max, i usually get 100% on them, so i think that is more like "play a number of games that you can manage" haha And about focusing on one platform, i was beginning to feel overwhelmed with how many games and consoles i had and was not using, feeling like i would never play all the things i had. Choosing one platform helped me with that, but i can see how collectors may not have this kind of problem. And lastly, i'm currently playing Dragon Age 2 after Dragon Age: Origins and having lots of fun, i'm with you on that too.
@@LuisMicrute Max I was playing was 3 so yeah I would agree while some people can manage 9,10 for me 2 is perfect but it depends on you and the game you're playing about the platforms for the first time yeah focusing on a single platform on maybe even franchise is a really good tip for a first few games but after a while you won't feel that overwhelmed and you'll be able to look at other platforms normally but yeah I feel like those 2 tips are good mostly for begginers but depends on a person after all you literally wrote "What works for me:" so it's not guaranteed for everyone
I enjoy switching between games to have other option if I don't feel like playing that particular game that day. Most of the time if I don't like it I'll just end up not playing anything and just watching YT instead.
Last year i had 118 games on my list. Now there is only 30 left to beat. I wonder what happens when im finished... Probably wait for GTA VI or Silent Hill 2

@@rasmachris94 Play different genres, a racing game now, then a FPS, then a RPG... Playing 2~3 games at a time will help too, if you play too many games in the same week or month you will eventually lose interest in some of them
I think analysis paralysis can be a big factor. Basically having so many options you cant pick anything. What it might be best to do in these scenarios is ask a series of questions to figure out what genre you really want to play; Do I want something competitive? If yes: Valorant, League, OW2, CS, DOTA 2 etc. If no; Do I want a shooter? Do I want a story game? Do I want an RPG? Lets say I want to play a singleplayer shooter; Do I want to play a shooter with a story? Do I want to play a shooter with RPG Mechanics? Do I want to play a shooter that is a rogue like? Do I want a shooter with realism? By narrowing down the genre, game type and specifics you want to play you can get a fewer and fewer selection of games to play making a decision easier.
i *TRY* to keep max 2 singleplayer games at a time and mix in infinite number of multi games, whatever my friends playing rn otherwise if you play like 5 singleplayers back to back their story loses novelty, not a big deal with dying light 2 as the story is just a bonus for me, usually my gameplay consists of fucking around, but games with heavy story narrative are the best experienced when you just play it without bigger breaks. one exception is rdr2, that game takes me months already, not really trying to speedrun and just launching it for few hours every week or two, such a slow pacing kind of works even with longer breaks. takes me hella long time to complete games now cuz i have like 5 singleplayer games to complete and dragons dogma 2 coming in 2 weeks ;_; let alone ghost of tsushima in like 2 months...
@@imfurea yeah finally a game i can get off the main story and just get lost in the world doing side quests and exploring, if it gives me half the feeling i had in skyrim i'll be satisfied.
I keep my backlog small. I have 6 games in backlog rn, one of them, Bright Memory Infinite, is like 2 hours long. The rest are Judgment, Okami, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Resident Evil Revelations 1 and 2. I mean there are also all the Game Pass games I wanna play but we don’t talk about those😅😅
Here are two simple ways to decide what to play. Make a list of everything you feel like playing right now. Then go by title order. Alternative: Put everything on a decision wheel and roll it.
My problem is I'm too busy trying to 100% the game while I play it but I also work got a wife all that gets in the way and before you know it I stop playing the game The only game that I can say I've been truly dedicated to was call of duty with over 100 hours. If only I could find 20 hour single player games that would be more my speed but I choose all the open world games with constant side quests to do.
the start of the video represents 99% of the people who want to knock off their gaming backlog, but instead of choosing a single player game with a great story, they opt for multiplayer games. This happens because there are so many good games to choose from, they don't know what to play, they feel bored for no reason, have too many games installed, or because after waiting too long, they just don't have the same hype they had when they bought the game and end up playing the same games over and over.
I finished AC Origins.. hated every one of those hours. For real, if you don't enjoy every minute of it, don't. Throw that b**ch out of the backlog and move on no matter what somebody says. Game had it's chance.
Step one get a Steam Deck I’m telling you those couple minutes in bed or on the throne add up. I’ve gamed so much more because of the Steam Deck but it hasn’t affected anything I do because I just knock it out in those little moments. You do have to kinda limit yourself but still.
