Making a STAR WARS inlaid cutting board with my CNC

  • With some leftover pieces of wood I made a 3-colors inlaid end-grain cutting board with an inlaid YODA on it! Full process detailed, including design in Vectric Vcarve. Engraved on an Aureus 3X CNC from Euro-Makers (similar to X-Carve or Shapeoko). This involves a lot of sanding. :)
    Please don't hesitate to leave a comment if you have a question, a suggestion or just if you liked the video.
    As some of you requested it here is a link to all the VCarve files. But... DISCLAIMER: those work for my CNC, please review the carving parameters (especially speeds, feeds and bit types) for your own machine! I don't want you to damage your CNC. :)

    Thank you for the great videos; I am still deciding which CNC machine to buy to start my journey with - but your videos are a real inspiration. One question.. for flattening purposes is there a reason you don't use a flattening bit rather than 6mm end mill. I'm guessing with the larger cut diameter it would save you a lot of time.

    • @stephanforseilles
      @stephanforseilles  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I have a larger flattening bit with inserts but I must go much slower and do several passes as it vibrates like hell in end grain hard wood. So all in all I'm faster with the 6mm. :)

    You have made a good video, but I doubt that all the settings you have made in VCarve Pro are the right ones. I guess the still image in the video on an End Mill 6 mm shows the End Mill that was actually used in the video.
    If you download the crv files for the Yoda project and in VCarve Pro and click on Edit… for "End Mill (6 mm) Stepover Fast", you will see that it is stated "1" at "No. Flutes ”. If, on the other hand, you look at the still image of this End Mill in the video, there seem to be 3-4 flutes.
    I am a beginner on CNC machines, but as I have understood it, the number of flutes (teeth) affects the Feed Rate that should be used.
    With kind regards
    Gert Jönsson
    Sweden

    • @stephanforseilles
      @stephanforseilles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gert! When I create a mill in VCarve I generally copy an existing one and set angle, diameter and stepover. As number of flutes doesn't have an impact on the tool path, I generally leave it alone out of sheer lazyness. ;) My 6mm mills are indeed 4 flutes!

    Hi Stephan, Great videos!! Thanks for making them and thanks for the files.
    How does the snipe affect your pieces with such short pieces in the planer? How do you deal with the snipe?
    How flat is your board after so much sanding with a ROS? Do the different woods make it uneven since some woods sand easier?
    Thanks again, I really appreciate your time and effort.

    • @stephanforseilles
      @stephanforseilles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Strangely my planer makes much less snipe on thin pieces. However I'm always ready to sacrifice the first 1.5in... because if you have snipe it will not glue correctly when you turn it 90°. I completely stopped planing end grain, too dangerous. Now I flatten with the CNC. For sanding I make light passes ( no pushing) so I don't dig in the softer woods. However on end grain, they're all pretty much very hard. 😅 That's why it takes so much time. But now that I flatten on the CNC I can make my cleaning tool paths much closer so I have less to sand.

    • @jasonevans9649
      @jasonevans9649 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stephanforseilles Thanks a lot Stephan. Wow your planer only has 1.5” of snipe. Mine has around 3”-3.25”. I need to practice my sanding I always get not flat boards with a ROS.
      Thanks again for the files. I may make a few for gifts and possibly sell a few.

    • @stephanforseilles
      @stephanforseilles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Normally there should a gap filled with glue (0.5 to 1MM). Finding the exact depth for that gap requires a bit of experimentation and there is not a "one-size-fits-all-designs" value, unfortunately. :)

    • @stephanforseilles

      Thanks. I generally go for a pass depth of 5mm (higher I can get chatter in really hard wood) and a stepover close to the tip width (0,2mm in my case). I don't need a super good surface finish at the bottom, it's never visible anyway.

      Hello it's sold by a French company called Euro Makers. But it's very similar to an X-Carve (but more ballscrews and less belts). Except for the spindle which is a Kress/AMB but that can be adapted to the X-Carve I think.
