      Those boots have $100 worth of steel on them in the form of nails ! Thats why they charge $500 for them the extra effort in the construction /details is very important . They do last long if they are oiled and cleaned periodically.

    Some people may say, why just not buy a new one. For some people if they throw away old boots they still have to pay for a new one, so why not save a piece of sentimental value at the same time rebuilded by their favourite maker. 👍🏼 Awesome.

    Just finding Nick’s boot’s YT channel. While part of my does wonder “why not go with a new boot,” I’m also thinking, damn, the old+new looks really, really cool, not to mention, there’s really nothing wrong with the part of the upper they kept, and structurally, it’s basically a new boot; so even if there isn’t much cost saving, you’re not really losing out on anything either going with the rebuild.
    Great work, I definetely want a pair!

      Believe it or not, that part of the boot has very little wear, and most importantly cuts down on a ton of break-in. Another big plus, is it cost about 1/3 the price of new

    • @jensrb50
      @jensrb50 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@glendelong1023 the boot in theory could be 1 third of of its current price

    • @glendelong1023
      @glendelong1023 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@jensrb50 Maybe. Leather price for tight grain like they use cost them I would guess about 30 bucks a foot and conservatively a boot takes 4 feet, thats 120. Soles if they are cheep cost 10 bucks. 8 to 10 hours build time at 20 bucks an hour that puts you near 300. figure in last rental/build, shop expenses ect.. and you get close to 400 dollars. I am also sure they figure that most will be rebuilt so there is a surcharge figured in to. For me, I would rather pay their asking price for a boot that will be used for 4 or 5 years then rebuild then say a redwing that will wear for a year and a half and be thrown away. just my opinion.

    When the stitchers re-stitch the upper are they able to go back through the old stitch holes or is it a brand new stitch job. What happens to water resistance during this process and the end of the leather where the stitching occurs?

  • @R.J._Lewis
    @R.J._Lewis 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Let me preface my question with the fact that I am not a cobbler, nor will I likely ever be: wouldn't removing all of the stitching between the vamp and the upper, then resewing the vamp to a new upper create lots of holes and therefore weak point between the two pieces? Unless you could perfectly utilize the old stitch holes, it feels like it would just provide an easier way for some stitches to tear out. Again, I'm not a cobbler, so I could be way off, but from my decidedly uneducated layman's POV, that's what it looks like.

    • @R.J._Lewis

      I’m a cobbler, and I change out our 24 grit sanding belts typically once a week, and that’s on about 50-75 pair of tear downs/finishing work. It all really depends on the grade of belt to. Also depends on the material you’re sanding as well. I’ve burned through a belt in 2 days sanding JR leather(oak bark tanned leather).
