Check the receiver window on the handle of the instrument, and the connections between the handle and the instrument for corrosion. If all good try hitting the yellow search button on the rc-pr5 unit, if still no luck maybe the infrared transmitter may be damaged, if it works it may be a setting in Carlson
Thanks for the comment. I was able to resolve this problem. I believe the problem ended up being the connection between the handle and the instrument. Although the connecting screws were tight, I don't think they were tight enough, and I'd advise anyone having this problem to clean the contacts (often an eraser is suggested for this purpose), re-assemble, and MAKE SURE THE SCREWS ARE TIGHT. It is hard to fit your fingers into the space where the screws are so you might want to use a tool, but be careful not to apply too much torque as you might break the screws off. I made a related video in which I confirmed that the infrared light inside the RC unit was working (at least one of the cameras on the iPhone, I can't remember whether front or rear facing, is capable of detecting infrared light), which led me to investigate the total station as the culprit.
