It's charming how much she really falls into a typical artist archetype. Very few artists are at all naturally inclined in the areas that make people good marketers or salesmen (or conversationalists). Also they tend to be fairly stubborn. Unfortunately I'm nowhere near as skilled as her but I share all the same foibles lol.
dont give up though, the whole idea is to transcend what you produced before and share how you perceive the world.

I love the way he was asking questions. He was genuinely interested in knowing about the process. And I think this is why Jordan Peterson is sharp and always seems ahead, his desire to learn and incessant curiosity about everything.
As for the advice given to the lady, as an artist, I think this is useful advice. Learning to communicate. Eventhough it can be difficult. And I think social media can help. Using hashtags and whatever necessary for visibility even coming on this podcast is a huge boost and visibility to her work. If she is willing to price her art, she might just gain potential customers

Ha! Two years later she has shown that she lacks an understanding of how social media works, of how free speech works, of how reading comprehension works, and how telling the truth and not lying works. Her illustrations for Dr. Peterson are amazing, but she is an illogical, nasty person.
Oh man you don't know how much I'd love to talk to you. I'm an artist, I have bipolar and I just saw my psychiatrist, today was the first time I talked about the things I learn from your content. This was the first time I was truly engaged in a constructive, meaningful and productive discussion. I think I might be getting out of the pit, a tiny step at a time but moving forward. I'm still young and "happily" married, I'm extremely agreeable, I've been "poor" the 15 years I've been making music, sometimes quality art that no one has listened to. All of us artists wish we could be featured by Jordan Peterson. The part about communication is spot on!
An artist has to be proactive not just in their work but finding their audience and maintaining that lifestyle as much as producing content. It's not impossible to make a living of art, only requires willingness, determination and sacrifice. Most people aren't willing to make those commitments. It really depends whether you want that life style and take that leap of faith. There is much more to art than simple talent. You must be daring to get out there and you must have this urge to break out.

I love how honest she is about her sales. So many artists would be tempted to lie about it especially on platform like this with Jordan Peterson.
I got the thought of making money out of my mind and managed to find a 9-5 fairly stable job that allows me to have a schedule, so I can make time for art. (I struggled in various hospitality jobs before that)
My main goal has become to make art so people can see it and the message can be communicated.
I now feel free to create whatever I want and take my time with it. If I knew that my living depends on the work I create, I would feel paralysed and perhaps would even compromise. I feel that there is a purpose in art beyond making money, it isn't a business but God's gift to humanity that has the power to influence souls and minds positively in suffering, hopelessness and manipulation.
If you sell your work, great... but if you don't and only manage to showcase it, maybe even better! Maybe certain types of art aren't a decorative living room lamp but a street lamp, or even a lighthouse!
You have to eliminate friction and resistance when making sales. You realize real quick when you sell online that every click is a hurdle for the buyer that you want to eliminate or at least minimize. Make the purchase as informative and easy as possible without needing to contact you and the sales will happen. The fact that she doesn’t list her prices will discourage a huge amount of people. Most artist don’t like marketing and fear self promotion but it is what will lead to success much faster. She has beautiful art but she needs to study sales and marketing and it will help immensely.
Networking is everything in this field.

Jordan brings up many excellent points, especially the need for an artist to communicate. And he is absolutely correct that it goes contrary to the nature of most artists. I used to teach photo marketing at a major USA photo school and the main thing I used to advise is for photographers to “get out there”, to create projects and get people involved. It important that people know you as an individual as well and to have them become excited about your art through keeping in touch with them. How I would not frame marketing to myself is that it’s “extremely hard” or “almost impossible”. That feels hopeless. Best for an artist to keep in the joy of creation and do their best. If a side job is needed then so be it. Keep on keeping on 💥
I inadvertently got into fine arts in August of 2013 after a breakup and I have not given up on it since then. I genuinely believe this was a gift given to me by God and I very much have enjoyed the journey and will continue to do so, which for me is being a successful artist in itself. I never enjoyed the idea of marketing or selling my artworks and reaching out to people on social media for commissions. I do have my instagram and facebook pages but those are just to share my love for fine arts into the world. Every portrait I have done ever since I started fine arts is like a child to me that I pamper and love with all my heart and just the thought of commercialising what I love gives me a lot of shame and anxiety. I need money but for that I have a job that pays me well.

As an artist myself, you have to know your market. She is vary talented with her realistic style... but she needs to promote her work to those who are likely to be interested. Also, clients like it when you talk to them. Tell them about your art and sound confident. She could also consider teaching workshops, there's always a market for that.

@georgemartin4354 I paint landscapes and animals and do miniature paintings, so luckily for me my art is easier to sell. However, I'm not putting a huge price tag on it either. I'd rather sell it for a little less than have it take up room in my studio forever. Right now, I'm making custom ornaments for people. They cost $15-$30 but it doesn't matter because they're a very easy seller, and I enjoy making them.

Well as this woman is undoubtedly talented she is also proof that if you don't promote/sell yourself no ones interested. At least she shares one thing with Van Gough, she's sold one painting in her lifetime.
The main problem is that many 'artists' don't know why they're doing it. If you know why you do it, you feel it and you'll be way more confident.

He is diplomatic and trying to help as best he can. Perhaps she didn't know this was going to be the direction of the conversation. I sense she felt cornered and unprepared for the questions. There isn't one answer, but getting out there and showing what you do is key to developing confidence and natural connections (those that resonate with you).I am very grateful for those who have been my patrons. They inspire me. I must underscore that the drive to create is everything. Some of us can't do without creating and are very introverted in our process. So...Baby steps and giant leaps. It is important to experiment with different avenues ( art fairs, gallery shows, community organizations and classes ( I meet some incredible people) and artwalks and art tours, art books, creating prints and keeping some originals, social media). It takes time to fully develop one's voice. That is a life-long journey and interaction that builds confidence. There isn't one right answer. I wish her the very best.
This discussion is very timely for me..I create "objects" with my hands, and am totally blocked and facing a wall when it comes to selling them, and like Juliette, I spend money to create them without anything in return , and have the same feeling of having to "sell myself" (which causes me great discomfort) to create a "business" with my creations. Exposing myself seems practically impossible to me, because my entire being refuses to "enter" this world of "over-exposure" that is the virtual world of the web. Thanks Jordan, as always I appreciate your opinions and advice.

I was represented once by that gallery as well . . . and of course I do not blame them for the way they run their business and ultimately I am thankful to have had the opportunity to show in NY, but I also spent all my savings on the chance to sell even one painting. Its hard to spend that kind of money as an artist. I didn't sell anything either.
I'd really value you going over more detail and information, apart from what you've discussed in your maps of meaning and personality courses, on your insights for artists, their roles in society, and further how you might rectify expression verses vanity. She expressed this conundrum herself, where she doesn't want to sell herself. Communication is good advice and yeah there's no shame in trying to survive with your art. I'm in that camp with a disposition opposed to marketing myself, yet I know I'm good at what I can do.

She went ballistic on me on IG. She had absolutely no problem summarizing her achievements with me as she was attempting to denigrate me. She didn't say anything about being a wife or a mother in her tirade, interestingly enough.
Her personality is her downfall. I'm an internationally published illustrator for Marvel Entertainment and I've been able to make money over and above whatever meager residuals the company pays due to my gift of gab. I get up in front of thousands of young people making visual art a performance art and serve as an inspirational speaker. This woman needs to learn how to value others and to become less self absorbed. Make your audience the central attraction, not you, and be sincere about it.
Artists have to be jacks of all trades to make a living. I have sold paintings and portraits but mostly graphic art work graphic design art direction illustration book design preparing books for publication playing in a band sign painting mural painting you name it.

Her work is better than the sill lifes at my local art museum in Pasadena, CA. I’ve sold about twenty acrylic paintings on Reddit. I paint people’s pets. It’s great because I love doing it and there’s actually a market for it.
The gallery system isn't necessary to sell one's work. The internet has democratized access to the market.

Hmm... Music Artists that make their way ... All of them talk about the band and edify each other and it lifts the band and carries them. They are able to " self promote". That is the proper word i believe. As a solo musical artist this is far more difficult.
Writing and painting is the same arena as solo musical artist except musicians and writers have more platforms or stages to perform on and sell their work.
There is a different approach needed for each artist in artistic categories. You cant lump all artists together. How to self promote a tap dancer ... Writer... Painter ... Cello player... Symphony.. It may seem like the same steps and so on but it is not. Major major differences in them.
But most artists evade this conversation because to some this is a natural act especially to those high in narcissistic personality...and some artists are appalled at that behavior. But it is necessary for self promotion.

I don't mean to be rude but I am just wondering; what is he liking so much about the art? It is a very realistic as if she just copied what was in front of her. Is the point of art not to stylize or embellish reality? Or am I just not appreciating some impressive technique she used? (I don't understand fine art, I'm a commercial artist).
You’re spot on, ultra realistic art is kind of pointless
It's not that hard to price the work of an upcoming fine artist. She needs to work out the cost of materials and her overheads such as her studio, etc., and how many hours it takes to make a painting. Then she needs to decide on an hourly rate for her labour to create each painting. This rate should be commensurate to the pay of a working professional of about the same age as the artist who works freelance as an illustrator or graphic artist. This is to establish the material value of her work. The works will only gain artistic value after she creates a demand for her work via exposure generated by the early sales. (Naturally, she should hold onto the very best work.) At which point, prices will naturally go up with her increased profile and she may even start taking bids. It's only when her work becomes a commodity in the art market that it begins to attract astronomical numbers, most of which will not reach the artist except when she sells work directly from her studio, accepts a commission or via an exhibition or using an art dealer.
My 2 cents: Very few artists make a living from selling art via their website. If she wants to start selling (without marketing herself) then find a good gallery who will sell and market for her.
I agree with you. However, she couldn't stand me offering my opinions about her work on IG. I don't see how she can handle people looking at her work in real time and saying anything positive or negative about it in real time. I wonder if she would go ballistic if people walked by and said nothing about her work. I even told that to her. I can't help but wonder if the fees she would have to pay for a gallery would cost more than the fees to self promote on a website.
it's also very difficult to find a gallery before you have sold at least 10 or 20 paintings. It is even more problematic to find a gallery and collectors who are interested in realism. Realism does not hold much value in the art world as realism is a technical skill and not a creative talent.
I have asked many artists at 'affortable are shows' if they can sell online, not one said yes.

@@steveis33 My current focus is comics and maybe shift into animation if it works out well. Though I don't know if there's really a demand for comics. Especially locally physically, so I'm torn between self publish physically or just put them online to a broader audience. (But the few friends I've spoken to, seem to warn me that just print is the better option as they don't know much about online comics except for those 4 panel ones you see for free on Facebook and such.)
So my content would be more commercialized I guess, but I just don't like the idea of constantly showing people my work and asking for them to buy. That's the sort of pester I want to avoid.
I also do some graphic design occasionally since that's what I studied at college, but I suck at promoting myself with that also. My low self esteem/self worth doesn't help either.

When it comes to anxiety, depression,self doubt etc this all comes with being an artist and you have to watch your back for scammers etc who will offer peanuts and sell to someone else for a mass.
You need to hang out with artists that are either making a living or fortune that will make you persevere and keep going.
When it come to prices The prices have come down it used to be in the 1990s roundabout 150 a page but now it’s about if you can get 75 per page that’s very good, however, there are other artists in other countries offering around 15 to 25 per which is just unsustainable in the west, you would have to be turning out at least 12 to 25 pages a week at that rate😑😞 and it will probably be not your best work.
With the kickstart, you can get the short story done, then do a kickstart, and I think a nine page kickstart comic $5 for a physical comic.?
It's hard when you find out you actually dislike business. I learned it but I don't have what it takes. Its better to have some kind of job and make art and have a good, user friendly website. The old masters made maybe 6 or 7 pieces a year and now we are expected to churn out that many in a month!

@@morro8785 That's kind of the impression I've gotten from her too. I have the luck of being able to do commissioned art on a fairly regular basis, and in some ways I can sympathize with her. I can't really put it in the right words, but I think many artists have a certain disinterest in talking about their own work or showing it around. And yet still trying to do it, probably cause it seems like the logical thing to try and make money off of something that we spend so much on.
Obviously I might be reading her wrong, since everyone is different. And it is something I myself haven't fully thought out. But I think there is a kind of conflict in many artists when it comes to this problem, and it might go even deeper than the 'selling out' part of it.

The majority of people interested in art for art's sake is usually other artists but they are not normally interested in buying, they tend to be selling and/or creating for fun... or they are broke.
The "normie" market is usually the target but you have to consider subject matter, medium and most importantly cost.
A lot of people are struggling financially right now and shelling out 3, 4 or more figure sums of money for a picture to hang on a wall is out of the question, but a T-shirt with a cool design on it for 20 quid... Not fine art but still art and a sale.
"The only problem with art is the artists." After she became belligerent with me on Instagram, I can now see the transcendental wisdom in that phrase. We got into a beef on IG where she claimed I was "arrogant." I apologized profusely and asked her many times what exactly I said that upset her. I mentioned what she has said in this very clip, and all she could do is lie and say "it's all in my very head." She herself may need a psychiatric hold in Russia with a state of the art detoxification program.
All fair enough from JP, but it fails to tackle the very first question - 'Do you want to be successful, or do you want to be good?' Not at all the same thing, and you have to allocate your time between the two things in the proportion that matches your answer.

My guess as to why she doesn't sell a lot of her work might be because she over prices it. I don't paint as realistically as she does but I have sold probably over three hundred pictures online. If you're an unknown artist people won't pay a lot of money no matter how good you are. That's been my experience anyway.

Artists will never be good at selling themselves by and large except for a few of them. They need agents to promote and sell their work and the agents take a cut of their profits. That’s the proper relationship.
The reason why most artists are miserable, is that they just focus on their art, and forget an essential skill : "how to sell".

The very successful galleries don't put prices on the works they exhibit either. And neither do they have set prices. The prices will depend on who is interested in a certain work. As for communication, for an introverted person it very likely will feel like wasted energy. I guess I'll never be successful. I lack the energy.

I had a telling set of interactions with her on Instagram. Her art for Dr. Peterson is majestic, but she isn't there in the head. She isn't that bright. She doesn't understand how the world works. She has a husband. I am sure he and his salary is the reason why she isn't homeless.
In this age I think the public are often told what is beautiful via marketing "certain galleries," like the the 3 stripes worth over 2 million, a dress made from meat etc.. , and thousands more which is very sad. These croc pots are what ruins good art here in the west today. IMO.

I am of the mindset of I am not really wanted/needed (in the sense of there are who are more unique/far better than me) so I don't really share my work (besides I rarely do "presentable" work anyways so I don't have much to show). My low self esteem also doesn't help.
This lady is setting herself to not sell… putting a price is the first step to maybe have a chance of making a living out of it in the future…. If it’s hard for her to put a price on it (which I completely understand) , she should at least put a ridiculously high price. One of two things can come out of it - a very wealthy art collector would be willing to pay this amount- or alternatively- a less wealthy person would contact her and discuss a possible alternative price.
She's painfully awkward and timid. I know all artists just want to paint and that's it, but at least learn a bit on how to sell, marketing, networking to be able to make a living.
