    The penny sit-up was one of the first homeless shelters, created for the people of Blackfriars, in central London, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was operated by the Salvation Army to provide comfort and support to its destitute clients. What made this shelter unique was that in exchange for a penny, clients would be allowed to sit on a bench in a reasonably warm room all night. They were not allowed to lie down and sleep on the bench. A penny sit-up was the cheapest homeless shelter at that time

    A very interesting and sad account of the poor and their even poorer living conditions. These stories are all told about the areas in which I was brought up and even in the 1970's these areas were full of impoverished and homeless people. Dock street at the lower end of Leman Street still has one of the doss houses I knew of but I guess it probably isn't a doss house now. This video reminded me of when my brother and I and our three sisters were forced to share a bed. Five of us crammed into a very small double. At least the bedding was clean, it was only temporary and the only thief was my brother stealing all the blanket :) Thanks again for another wonderful slice of the poor life of London.

    How horrible to live like that! And I complained for sharing a bed and a bedroom with my older brother till we were 7 and 8 years old.

      Consider that, today, the poor in America (and other Western countries) suffer from an obesity epidemic, as opposed to scraping up pennies for bread and tea, and you can appreciate how fortunate we are to live in 2023, as opposed to 1893.

    A doss house sounds like a city shelter. During the winter, if there are no beds, you can sit in a chair for the night, if they don't turn you away. You better sleep with everything you carried with you, or else you'll be leaving a few items lighter. Men and women are all crammed together, hacking, coughing, stinking and snoring. As soon as the sun comes up, back outside you go. Most prefer to sleep outside when it's warm.

    Great channel! Sounds like the next step up from just being homeless. Our world today, with the overcrowding and financial woes, seems to be on a track to this very existence. I used to refer to my Victorian era row house as "me old doss house" but a place of my own is far above these conditions. Since my best friend kicked me out of her life I started thinking of my house, without the laughter and smiles it once had, as "the orphan's tear". Waiting for the next video 😁

    • @AnitaDil
      @AnitaDil ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Every country rich or poor had this deprivation. The problem usually stems from overcrowding from people coming into the cities trying to make their fortune. You must remember this is a different time, no contraception, sanitation or decent medicines, no real cures for diseases…even inanimate wallpaper could kill you (if you could afford it) .Many philanthropists really tried to help the destitute and did succeed to a degree. Also you must remember as is the same today, do you see many very wealthy people helping the poor? No.

      I'm sure it was but no more than today because people today are weak and cowardly. You see in this time there were still real men and women moving about in the world. Unlike today where most people, especially in the west and in America are overgrown, ungrateful, overprivileged children regardless of age. That's why as good as we have it today currently depression, suicide, anxiety, Etc are at an all-time high. Especially with kids and teenagers. That's what happens when the overgrown children that I was speaking about go ahead and crap more children. We need licenses to fish, Hunt, Drive, but for some reason not to breed. Anything can hump and crap a kid. Sad.

    What an interesting yet tragic video when we consider much of the world still lives in similar squalor.
    The viewers may be interested to know, the word 'hangover' finds it's origins in such places.
    A hangover was a communal pew with a communal rope hung in front. Unfortunate people would sleep 'hungover' the rope. Can you imagine the discomfort?
    Do a search and see for yourself what people have endured.

    Having gone through US Army boot camp (going on 22 years ago) I can understand the feeling of no privacy. However you rapidly get used to it and anywhere you can catch a few winks makes you an island of solitude as sleep is the grandest privacy of all. Funny how still to this day the younger men are 'hilarious' while the older men are sullen.

    How are you doing sir happy new year thank you for your wonderful cultural documentary channel although it’s really painful memories especially for poor people at Victorian era but really deserves research as always iam gathering main information about topics you mentioned briefly here it’s first of all definition of dos house American English flophouse British doshouse . It’s place that offers very low cost lodging space providing space to sleep and minimal amenities it’s costs to stay four pence which why believed prostitution of east end charged ad much of their services . In whitechapel at late 19 th century there were 233 lodging houses also known as doshouses as many as 800 poor people would pay for room lodging house either one or two nights. It’s cheap rooming hotel . Till nowadays dos house survives in London institution doshouse which is redolent of days of Charles dickens. Difference between doshouse and lodge house both they are same thing communal house for working members of society to live in they were also sometimes called single women houses , working men home , four penny hotel . Thank you for giving us chance to read learn new information improve our English language as well best wishes for you your family friends.
