This movie is criminally underrated!!! should be talked right next to movies like Indiana Jones or even Nightmare on elm street , cause this movie can go both sides , as horror as adventure... and its superrrrrr fun! With and A+ cast!

I remember I saw this in the theater with my friend. We were like 7 or 8 at the time. The movie freaked me out and I remember walking out of the theater and his dad saying, “You guys were pretty scared in there.”
Decades later I remember watching a tiny bit of it on TV and realizing how bad the effects were. But for a little kid watching this movie that it was truly terrifying.

Dreamscape, despite the bad special effects at times, is one of the few movies with realistic dream sequences. It is a good combination of mundane visuals with weirdness. The dreams don't make sense while at the same time making its own sense. I don't think there is any other movie this close to what dreams are really like.

Yes! With Dabney Coleman as the little kid’s super spy imaginary friend called “Jack Black”- (and somehow, also his father)- and the old lady villain who wore gloves to hide her missing finger. I like how Dreamscape came out before a Nightmare on Elm Street, which came out in 1984 as well. But Dreamscape hit the theaters first. Now though Nightmare is a different type of movie that has many similarities to Dreamscape, many similarities. You die in the dream, you die in real life. And there wasn't a real slasher type of element to Dreamscape. But if you want to really get into it,Tommy was the slasher/ assassin who would go into the dreams and do the killing for the evil owner who wanted to kill the president. If you were to watch these movies back to back knowing that Dreamscape came out first, you'd think Nightmare ripped it off quite a bit, especially in the main idea, and dream sequences. But,Nightmare did come to theaters in 1984,made much more at the box office, and was already made and post production was completed. So it was very coincidental, but not a rip off in anyway. Also Dreamscape had very poor marketing, yes,it was a classic. A great movie. But Nightmare had great marketing,Wes Craven's new Boogeyman had gotten ppl in line, and buts in seats,it was more horror than sci-fi and romance. And horror movies in the 80s were the movies ppl were wanting to see. Dreamscape would have probably done better if it was marketed much better. I really don't recall really seeing a trailer on TV for it. On the other hand, you couldn't get through a commercial break from your TV show, with at least a quick trailer of Nightmare. But Dreamscape I believe, was the first movie to explore such a concept of dream traveling and killing in a dream, only to awaken to see that if you die in your dream, you die in real life. Two movies, that came out in the same year, with the same overall idea. Dreams were no longer a game, you die in the dream, you are dead for good. And both were actually great movies.

Kelly definitely stole the scenes and let's not forget his awesome baddy performance in The crow with the inside tribute to The Warriors, love this movie still for nostalgia too.👍

Inception ripped this movie off! And Dreamscape had far more imagination on a miniscule budget!

Not really. A lot of the cast was old at the time and they managed to live really long lives. Eddie Albert was 99, Plummer was 91, and Von Sydow was 90. Quaid, Capshaw and Kelly are still around.

I'm a little late seeing your vid, but i just watched Dreamscape on "shout factory tv live com" last week! I found it completely by accident looking up Ultraman stuff! There is a lot of other cool (and not so cool) 80's movies and shows on there too, including some Elvira episodes! And i didn't know there's a 1945 version of Brewster's Millions, but i watched it too! I prefer the remake. ;)
Not intended to be an ad or anything, just sharing.
Great video! You really did a movie i consider a classic a little bit of justice.

Omg yes! Fun to revisit this, which I saw in the theater back then. Only thing is, that opening sequence you showed of the nuclear bomb looked way too stylized to me to match your idea that it would mean an R rating today…

Why is the narrator so hung up on the sweaters? Maybe he should text Dr. Freud or something.
