I absolutely love SNEAKERS. My mom and I saw it in the theater when it first came out -- Her for the classic actors (Redford and Poitier), me for the story and the techno stuff ... I was in my early 20s. I agree. This movie is underrated.

When I met Robert Redford briefly after watching a movie at the festival, I told him I only had one thing I wanted to say. "Too many secrets". He, "belly laughed" as soon as I said it with that smile and twinkle in his eye and simply said "Welcome to Sundance".
The fake manufactured Zapruder Film is the #1 film of all no doubt about it! She was great pretending to get her head blown off! Almost seemed real didn't it? She should be behind bars but we all know that won't happen will it? Fooled you didn't she?

One of my all-time favorite movies. The sad thing is that it was trying *so hard* to warn people about what the future of information warfare would look like, but it was still just a bit too geeky for people to pay attention. Plus, it's still one of the most realistic depictions of "hacking" ever put on film, especially the emphasis on low-tech bypasses and social engineering.
On the accuracy it's probably why it didn't do as well as it should have. There is usually solid basis to the hacking in hacking based movies and tv shows but they don't trust the audience to understand and stay engaged with the story without making it sexier with fancy graphic representation which ruins it. Mr Robot does seem to have changed that, they seem to be much more trusting that these days people have enough basic knowledge that watching people doing social engineering and writing lines of code is something the audience can understand although its still not perfect
The passport scene was one of only two false notes in the movie. It could have been done differently and not been so forced. The other one being the scene where Poitier picks up the paper in the back of the car. I cannot beloved Redford would have purchased the paper and not seen Janek’s picture. Have a paper dispenser right there and have Poitier go get the paper while waiting for Redford and then go from there. Easy. ( Yes there could have been a deleted scene covering this, but…)
Yet another perfect blast from the past! I have this on DVD, and it gets regular play still. What’s remarkable is how well it aged, only so slightly despite it being almost 3 decades old. Of course, I remember what it was like back then; answering machines, the start of cyber-security awareness that rose to the Y2K panic.. I miss the 90’s.
I always say that a good actor can make you like them, a good actor can make you hate them, but a great actor can do both. David Strathairn is an actor who can definitely do both. His character in Sneakers easily makes you love the guy, then you see him play a complete monster in the film 'Dolores Claiborne' and you wonder whether you can ever like the guy ever again, but you do :)
The reason the older tech doesn’t age this movie badly is because it’s never presented as the cutting edge of the mainstream. This is about hackers who are “in the walls” doing unglamorous work. Any time a movie tries to show how up-to-date its gear is (eg from the 90’s: Hackers or The Net) it falls on its face during repeat viewings, but in Sneakers, its the characters and the heist(s) that keep our interest. The tech is just their tools of the trade.
I used to watch this with my Dad in the 90s and watched it again fairly recently. Definitely holds up. Chillingly prescient. Great characters and good comedic moments peppered in there as well.
I am not an 80s/90s kid so I actually just watched the movie yesterday for the first time! It's one of my parents' faves! And I loved that all of the characters were older because honestly? I've always preferred films with older people than teenagers.
I saw this in the movies with my parents at like age 9. I still love this movie and idk why its so underappreciated. This in top 20 and still in my yearly rotation of viewings

I love the balance and tone of this film. It's serious and suspenseful at times, yet has comic levity and tongue in cheek moments that gives credit to the audience. A rarity to find these days. Great review as always 👍

Being a teenager in the 90's, I saw this on the big screen. A most excellent cloak and dagger picture. One of the most impressive aspects of this movie is the late great James Horner's score. A great underrated score in his already splendid filmography.

I really enjoyed this film and loved the score by the late James Horner. I really think that the film would've been a smash hit had it included bigger action scenes.

My dad rented this from the video store when it was a fresh new release, it had a stellar cast and the story was pretty interesting but at times was a little slow going, but I enjoyed it overall, own it on DVD now.
I saw this movie at the cinema when it first came out. I've always loved this film. I love that the hacking in this film is portrayed relatively realistically. I love the connection this film has with wargames as the writers came up with the idea while researching that film.
I worked at a movie theater when this came out. Had to build the movie from many reels onto one big platter. After that you have to watch the movie once to make sure its assembled right. I wasn't excited about watching it but man a surprise it was! Such a great movie, watch it about once every year or so.

I loved how quick Cosmo knew there was no way a computer paired Mary and Steven together for a date. also, of course it's underrated, but I think the scene of Whistler walking Brice back through his kidnapping and using just the audio clues he figured out where they went. (after figuring out the outdoor party he heard was a bunch of birds all cackling.)
For people who were teenagers when this came out, this film holds a special place in hearts. It also introduced me to the legends Robert Redford and Sydney Poitier. Great film.

I remember first watching little snippets of this movie. I think HBO or maybe VHS at my cousin's house when I was little and this was 92. so this must have been like a really '90s. I don't know, maybe like 93.94 but man this movie just stuck with me and I remember a lot about it and it seems so high tech and cool. that's why I stuck with me and then later on when I was adult when I found another video store I flooded back all these memories. then I just love to even more cuz I was able to appreciate it more as an adult and I have it on DVD. and yeah it really is one of my favorite movies ever. And it still holds up. believe me technology wise I'm surprise him. that stuff was even shown because it's dipping into some scary information. great movie perfect!
I had a chance to watch this movie in Times Square, but there was just a billboard for it and even though my dad explained to me that it wasn't about shoes, I wasn't interested. Me and my mom ended up watching it a lot on VHS and every time it was on Cable.

A super film. The combined talent is off the wall. "Wars aren't won with bombs and bullets, its about who controls the INFORMATION". I've always loved that quote.
I liked Takers also , not many people seen it . I think it was because ( and I no his real name just refuse to say it ) Aniken Skywalker and wannabe Ludicrous T.I. also Chris Brown where in the cast which BTW are all TERRIBLE actors.

I was around 10 when i saw this on TV and recorded on VHS. Watched it every day for a long time. I rewatched yesterday, and still holds up after 30 years. Interesting cast, good chemistry and great character writing. It's amazing how is fast paced and you catching up the story very quickly. Checked the director, shame his next project was decade after this one . Oh yeah.. and i still got crash on the blonde police girs that Phoenix was asking her number 🤣
I never saw this when it first came out - I think it was when I rented it from Blockbuster (eeekkk!). But damn, did I love it! I grew up with Mr Poitier watching his films with my dad every time they came on TV, and tech was just starting to 'take off' and becoming more normal. It was/ is such a great film to me - thanks for doing the video!

Yeah, making over a 100 million domestic in the early 90’s, adjusted for inflation, that’s a pretty good hit. I’m sure it did great on video ad well… but hey, it’s a good trip down memory lane.
I never get tired of watching this film. FWIW though, I'd class whistler as more of a phreaker than a hacker, based on his nickname and that he has perfect pitch :)
Hate to be nit pick but at 8:06 call Steven Tubaloski's (Probably not spelled correctly) character Warner Brans, it is actually Warner Brandis. Love this movie though, have it on my external hard drive with a bunch of other favorite movies.
This was one of the few movies my entire family liked and could agree to watch together. We had to buy a second copy after watching and wearing the first tape.
I love this movie. One of my absolute favorites that nobody else has seen...nor will put in the time to see. It's a shame people ask for, then ignore advice.
Incredible cast, a disturbingly prescient script that has aged like fine wine, one of the all-time great comedic cameos from James Earl Jones. And a horrifyingly underrated score - one of James Horner's masterpieces (having Branford Marsalis available certainly didn't hurt, my god). He's really at the height of his powers here - by the time Braveheart and Titanic were released a few years later, he'd already gotten into a pretty heavy state of derivativeness that only got worse as the years went on. But he's got full command of his creativity and mastery here.
People having never seen this film kind of blows my mind. The cast, the script, the MUSIC. It’s a very special film. And ho boy does it make you think.
I first saw Sneakers on home video in 1998 when I rented the cassette. It has been one of my favorites since that time. It was ahead of it's time in terms of it's subject and message and still holds up remarkably well today. Endlessly rewatchable.
This is one of my favorite movies. I still love it an watch it often. Such a good 90's hidden gem. I wish that it was more popular today. Great story, fun tech for the time, and just a really good adventure.

i've got to mention the amazing soundtrack by branford marsalis and james horner. it's different than your usual fare...it's both mysterious and playful. the woodwinds featured really help this music stand out from the rest of similar flicks in the genre. love this movie! (edited a few hours later...) catch me if you can has the only other playful, yet suspenseful soundtrack i can come up with that is in the same vein, by the great john williams.☺
HELL YEAH!!!!! Loooove this movie. Nobody I know has heard of it. Here in Australia it was a minor hit. It's my go to flick whenever I need a smile and movie "comfort food" . The cast really look like they are having a blast. The way Redford plays the scene where he is caught in the Hotel room is brilliant. The way he delivers the line ... " Give him h.....help".... when he is being fed something else to say as a joke...still makes me laugh out loud.The guy is never given the credit he deserves for his acting because he's so natural he makes it look easy. Lots of great actors out there but to be charming likeable and funny....that's a STAR my friend. Plus what a great soundtrack.i think it might be James Horner. Thank you Jo Blo I love this series.Youve hilighted so many great films. Many to my delight I've loved for years but equally some new discoveries I thank you for. Great work
I have seen this. I have it DVD and have watched it numerous times. And yes, you're right about the casting, it is terrific. The scripting was excellent too. A great mix of drama and comedy. Everyone is great, but my favourite is David Strathairn. I liked the visual computer decryption effects too (which were interestingly cameoed in the opening credits). A little unrealistic, but a joy to watch. I doubt it could be remade. I just can't see it escaping from its technology age intact.

I grew up in Hayward and always got a kick out of knowing the sound of the San Mateo bridge was an important plot point.
Amazing, thoughtful movie - way ahead of its time - also appreciated disabled people for their special abilities...

I saw this in the theater, and I loved it from beginning to end. I have probably watched it more than 30 times since then, and I never get tired of it. It was so very well done, and with such a great cast. RIP River Phoenix
I remember first watching little snippets of this movie. I think HBO or maybe VHS at my cousin's house when I was little and this was 92. so this must have been like a really '90s. I don't know, maybe like 93.94 but man this movie just stuck with me and I remember a lot about it and it seems so high tech and cool. that's why I stuck with me and then later on when I was adult when I found another video store I flooded back all these memories. then I just love to even more cuz I was able to appreciate it more as an adult and I have it on DVD. and yeah it really is one of my favorite movies ever. And it still holds up. believe me technology wise I'm surprise him. that stuff was even shown because it's dipping into some scary information. great movie perfect!
I had a chance to watch this movie in Times Square, but there was just a billboard for it and even though my dad explained to me that it wasn't about shoes, I wasn't interested. Me and my mom ended up watching it a lot on VHS and every time it was on Cable.
This was one of my favorite movies when I was a teenager absolutely. I had it on VHS and wore the VHS out because I watched it probably hundreds of times.
A super film. The combined talent is off the wall. "Wars aren't won with bombs and bullets, its about who controls the INFORMATION". I've always loved that quote.

I liked Takers also , not many people seen it . I think it was because ( and I no his real name just refuse to say it ) Aniken Skywalker and wannabe Ludicrous T.I. also Chris Brown where in the cast which BTW are all TERRIBLE actors.
Amazing movie! I'm surprised you didn't mention James Horner's incredibly underrated score. Really elevates the tension in the serious scenes

This was one of my favorite movies! I almost forgot about it.
I was around 10 when i saw this on TV and recorded on VHS. Watched it every day for a long time. I rewatched yesterday, and still holds up after 30 years. Interesting cast, good chemistry and great character writing. It's amazing how is fast paced and you catching up the story very quickly.
Checked the director, shame his next project was decade after this one .
Oh yeah.. and i still got crash on the blonde police girs that Phoenix was asking her number 🤣
I never saw this when it first came out - I think it was when I rented it from Blockbuster (eeekkk!). But damn, did I love it! I grew up with Mr Poitier watching his films with my dad every time they came on TV, and tech was just starting to 'take off' and becoming more normal. It was/ is such a great film to me - thanks for doing the video!
I remember this movie being a really big deal when it came out. The theatre was quite packed when I saw it, I guess I am surprised to see it on your "...Never saw" retrospective.
Yeah, making over a 100 million domestic in the early 90’s, adjusted for inflation, that’s a pretty good hit. I’m sure it did great on video ad well… but hey, it’s a good trip down memory lane.

I never get tired of watching this film. FWIW though, I'd class whistler as more of a phreaker than a hacker, based on his nickname and that he has perfect pitch :)
The two other people i know with perfect pitch are both blind!!! But my son can tell you which musical key you are hitting!!!!!

Hate to be nit pick but at 8:06 call Steven Tubaloski's (Probably not spelled correctly) character Warner Brans, it is actually Warner Brandis.

This was one of the few movies my entire family liked and could agree to watch together. We had to buy a second copy after watching and wearing the first tape.
I love this movie. One of my absolute favorites that nobody else has seen...nor will put in the time to see. It's a shame people ask for, then ignore advice.

Incredible cast, a disturbingly prescient script that has aged like fine wine, one of the all-time great comedic cameos from James Earl Jones. And a horrifyingly underrated score - one of James Horner's masterpieces (having Branford Marsalis available certainly didn't hurt, my god). He's really at the height of his powers here - by the time Braveheart and Titanic were released a few years later, he'd already gotten into a pretty heavy state of derivativeness that only got worse as the years went on. But he's got full command of his creativity and mastery here.
Oh great now i have to go watch this movie again...cheers

People having never seen this film kind of blows my mind. The cast, the script, the MUSIC. It’s a very special film. And ho boy does it make you think.

I first saw Sneakers on home video in 1998 when I rented the cassette. It has been one of my favorites since that time. It was ahead of it's time in terms of it's subject and message and still holds up remarkably well today. Endlessly rewatchable.
Truly an underrated retro tech and quirky spy thriller. Love this movie.
This is one of my favorite movies. I still love it an watch it often. Such a good 90's hidden gem. I wish that it was more popular today. Great story, fun tech for the time, and just a really good adventure.

Big Redford fan so I went to see it as soon as it came out and I loved it. Then rented it as soon as it came out on VHS. Great movie.

This was actually one of my late father's favorite movies, and one of his first VHS purchases. I used to think it was a basketball movie! LOL! =)
i've got to mention the amazing soundtrack by branford marsalis and james horner. it's different than your usual fare...it's both mysterious and playful. the woodwinds featured really help this music stand out from the rest of similar flicks in the genre. love this movie!

HELL YEAH!!!!! Loooove this movie. Nobody I know has heard of it. Here in Australia it was a minor hit. It's my go to flick whenever I need a smile and movie "comfort food" . The cast really look like they are having a blast. The way Redford plays the scene where he is caught in the Hotel room is brilliant. The way he delivers the line ... " Give him h.....help".... when he is being fed something else to say as a joke...still makes me laugh out loud.The guy is never given the credit he deserves for his acting because he's so natural he makes it look easy. Lots of great actors out there but to be charming likeable and funny....that's a STAR my friend.

I have seen this. I have it DVD and have watched it numerous times.
And yes, you're right about the casting, it is terrific. The scripting was excellent too. A great mix of drama and comedy. Everyone is great, but my favourite is David Strathairn.
I liked the visual computer decryption effects too (which were interestingly cameoed in the opening credits). A little unrealistic, but a joy to watch.
I doubt it could be remade. I just can't see it escaping from its technology age intact.
