UPDATE I have been reading through everyone’s comments and I wanted to add some additional information about the project here. 1. Where are the benchmarks and games? Because the Xbox is a locked system, there is no room for overclocking without modifying the console’s software which Microsoft really doesn’t like and will likely get the console banned. There also isn’t a good way to measure performance, but it is likely very similar to stock. Gameplay is also similar to stock. You can monitor various temperatures on the display which gives some insight into performance. 2. Why is the console water cooled? While water cooling doesn’t yield much direct benefit to console performance it does reduce heat-soak which will allow the console to run at 100% without throttling. Cooler components also generally last longer. Also, the world's greatest Xbox has to be water cooled or it isn't really the world's greatest is it? 3. Why not build a PC? The goal of this project was to build the world’s greatest Xbox, not PC, so building a PC wouldn’t exactly accomplish that goal. For the time and money spent on this Xbox, I could have multiple gaming PCs that outperform this console, but I wanted this to be a more unique and challenging project. 4. Where are the STL print files? I have not released the STL files because there are about 50 disjointed parts with random modifications and revisions that are in no way intuitive. The 3D-printed parts are also a very small portion of this build, and when combined with the other custom pieces and modifications after printing, it would likely be much easier to start from the ground up. I also kinda like the idea of this being a one-off. 5. Why is the coolant purple? The coolant is supposed to be pastel gray, but it does have a purple tint. I went with gray so the accent could be any color without clashing, but I will probably go with green once I flush it. 6. Is it for sale? I have considered making custom Xbox cases without the water cooling, but that has been put on the back burner for now as I work on other projects. If there is enough demand, I might reconsider it. As for this console, I actually tried to auction it off on Ebay, but sadly everyone on the internet just wants to troll so most of the bids ended up being fraudulent and I had to cancel the listing. 7. S*x box? Lol, I heard it too after rewatching the video. 8. What does Microsoft think about this? I have tried reaching out to people at Microsoft and Xbox about this project, but I have yet to get a response. 9. Are there any more videos? I originally made a lot of content for this project on TikTok so if you want to see some more Xbox videos you can check those out over there. My username is the same as TH-cam. EDIT 1: I don't check this channel very much and this video has gained a lot of comments and attention recently which I am incredibly thankful for. I am starting to reply to comments and I hope to get to everyone soon! EDIT 2: Replying to comments is taking much longer than I expected, but it has been fun answering your questions. It is definitely going to be a while before I get to everyone.
Your engineering and design skills are as professional as it gets. Of course, the clean, almost cable-less interior layout, the slide-in design of components, and the use of the Pi and the external display are immaculate, but the small little things like the leather strap for removing the custom backplate, powder coat finishes, and the rotating 3D model on the front display really make this creation feel polished and complete. I hope this video gets more traction!
As awesome as this is, I doubt it would have very much, if any impact on how well games would run. The Xbox would have to adjust the clock speeds of the CPU and GPU based on thermals. This probably does happen to an extent but I'm assuming Microsoft only had thermals with their OEM cooling in mind. Unless the Xbox team pulled a chad and left headroom for mod enthusiasts by design. Don't get me wrong though, this is cool as hell and took a tone of skill to make look as clean as it does.
Performance will be identical to a non overheating xbox, the temps will be dramatically different though. My guess would be a 20 to 25 degree drop in peak thermals.
I'm 45 years old. You can't imagine what it was like living in the time we are in now. You can't know what it was like to go from Atari to Nintendo. Fast forward to today's machine, the XBOX. @@bravefastrabbit770 it's set to power limit not thermals like you can on PC! And there isn't enough power there to make the APU "thermal throttle" The maximum draw on the APU is 200W! In exactly the same way, if you tried to LN2 a series X you wouldn't get any more performance out of it because it's power set...not thermal set!!
I think the water cooling purposes are to 1.) See if it’s possible in a small footprint, and 2.) If so use the cooler to make the XBox last much longer. Not to perform better because there is no current way to overclock a console CPU (as of now) and really no need to.
@@kid_rajah 1) i doubt it's just to see if it is possible in a small package, sicne it's probably just to see if it's possible at all. 2) water cooling is absolutely NOT more reliable or long lasting than air cooling, this is not for longevity. 3) even if there was a way to overclock, most games would just have a hard limit on 30, 60 or 120 frames, so at best you'd be on slightly better resolution, and again, as @senilestix said, it's power limited, so even that would be hard
Usually, these kinds of mods end up feeling like prototypes or proof of concepts, even in their finished state. This one, however, feels like a genuine product, like something I’d actually bother going through with, rather than appreciate from a distance. Wonderful work.
Ark would be a fantastic benchmark since it runs like shit on the console and comes with a built in fps counter/graphics settings. for tiny water cooled systems it can help filling if you can run a vacuum before filling. it tests if the lines can hold pressure but it's main function is when filling you hook a sealed tank to the cooling lines and open the valve and the coolant will get sucked right in the entire system. kinda confusing explaining it for my lil brain. but it's how A/C systems get filled quickly
