Maybe they didn’t want to take a risk of making an edgy superhero themed movie that wasn’t even tied to marvel or dc. Don’t know if there were examples of movies like that working before kick ass that released 2 years later. I read somewhere that the curving bullet thing wasn’t in the original blueprint of the movie they put it in because Angelina Jolie said she wouldnt do the movie if they didn’t have a scene of her killing like 8 dudes and then herself with a single bullet.
Well can you give me a list of movies who are comic book inspired or adapted who Hollywood didn't screwd up . Granted some comic's can get to over the top but ..... When you try to adapt it this will give some red flag for some people .
The Hollywood version of humpy Dumpty . He was working in a burger joint till a sexy queen in a LaTeX show up and says . Come with me your the chosen one . Humpy ughhh aaa okay miss he said in a stupid way 4 min after a rocky montage from the 80s He is killing people and learn to talk less stupid . Scriming LONG LIVE THE QUEEN while some song from Queen is playing in the background . The killer Queen one . Yeah let's hope some from the trauma films or the mug busters didn't all ready made this movie to annoy Hollywood 😂 .
in my opinion, some things shouldn't be adapted one to one from the source material. just because a movie or show isn't exactly like the source material doesn't make it worse, as long as the changes service the story or fix things that are not that good or frankly stupid in the original. and in my opinion, the movie is better than the comic.
it does make it worse. if the movie only going to use 1% of the source material, might as well make the movie its own fvcking IP instead of borrowing source material's name to get people to watch it, which is dumb. The movie would stand on its own better if it never did borrow the Wanted name and went with an original IP but noped... Borrows 2 scenes from the comics and using character's names and throwing out the rest I would not consider it an adaptation.
The worst offence is not casting Morgan Freeman as Mr. Rictus. Mainly because it robbed us of Freeman saying "I don't fuck goats, Mr. Wesley. I make love with them."
I love how you break these stories down. I agree that the "casual" mentions of rape and extreme violence are disturbing. But I think they are meant to be disturbing. This is a story of villains, unhinged and unchecked - likely what would happen in any world with "super powered" villains. There are no heroes here - just villains in power having a major power shift. With this in mind - I think most of the story still holds up 16 years later. Still didn't appreciate the ending, but I understand where Millar was coming from with essentially holding up a mirror to the reader for "enjoying" or "participating" in this orgy of violence... Good stuff. Keep up the good work bro!
I fully agree with you, but I also think the casual mention of rape is a bit too far over that line just because in my mind that scene is almost a throw away and has no relevance except making me fucking hate the protagonist more than I think I need too
@@user-up8jj4wj4i mark millar has admitted before he does it because that it is the best and cheap way to portray a villain. Make them do heinous taboo shit, rpe, torture before death, and the like, overall just twisted acts beyond just stealing money and world invasion. We cant really hold him accountable, he's a practicing catholic, he has a kid or two, showing heinous stuff through say the medium of comics doesnt really mean he condones it. I wouldnt say he's mangaka creepy. the author is always a participant as well. they might say "i'm holding this up as a mirror to show how shitty you are" but they have to do that to themselves first. read the foreword to "a clockwork orange" for an author telling you the same thing.
I’ve seen Shocker from Marvel The Vulture, Marvel Mr. Freeze, DC Ghost Rider, Marvel Magneto, Marvel There are more but it’s crazy how many established supervillains make cameos here!
My boy. The Kontent King. Every video you put out is great. You cover the heavy adult comics. Shit is great. I always tell my friends about everything you drop.
While I prefer the premise of the Wanted comic and the designs of some of the villains, I prefer the plot and the film way more. I think the comic wasted its potential in my opnion. I do think the film Wanted has a solid story and an enjoyable watch.
If most of these villains could be stopped with a bullet then how were they able to beat their version of heroes like they must've had some real goofballs. Like they didn't have a frank castle?
34:16 => That shot of Wesley falling with his back to the looming ground and him shooting towards the sky at superheroes flying towards him. This to me is one of the GREATEST moment in sequential superhero art. You can feel the air as he is dropping and bullets zooming up into the sky hitting heroes left and right. That shot alone would make a movie whether it be superheroes or a spy thriller. But being that it is superhero makes all that damn more special.

MANNNNN this was the 1st comic I ever read cause I kinda liked the movie then found out about the book and saw how much better it was. It got me into indie comics and all the non mainstream stuff aaaaaand 1st black guy😂
I really like the movie, partially because this is one of those comics that cannot be translated faithfully into a movie (and I really like the bullet curving). I think it'd work as a show though
I loved the comic completely.... read it about 9 years ago in my early Thirties still reminisce over growing in the 80's / 90's. To me this comic book will always be special
I want to mention how spot on “The Killers” response was to an ambush. Being a Marine for 8 years and a combat vet kinda makes this my area of specialty. So when pro finds himself in an ambush situation they have been conditioned to not react by hitting the ground or hiding, since that is the kill zone. Instead we are taught to quickly “take the fight to them” or simply walk and shoot to the enemy. So while jumping out a high rise is not good physics it was awesome to see a writer who knew how a pro reacts to something. Sorry if I came off as preachy, but it just is very refreshing.
Thanks for coming forward, to many movies or comics are not very realistic(in my opinion) but there is no one with experience coming forward to correct or give context.
I am a massive Mark Millar fan. All of his Millarworld titles are awesome! I also love his major Marvel titles. I just picked up the Wanted movie for $5. I haven't watched it yet and I'm now apprehensive lol. I hope Netflix doesn't f*** up their Millarworld adaptations.
I'm convinced, based on his different comics, Mark Millar does not know how to write endings or villains. He just knows how to come up with interesting universes.
This is the best comic book series I mean it has the best premise villains who wiped out all the heroes and now run the world through the shadows that’s just impressive
It would be interesting to see a faithful TV series made out of this. The first season could follow the original comic book series faithfully, the second season could deal with an interesting story concerning superheroes somehow regaining knowledge of their past lives, as well as normal humans that have been wronged by the Fraternity seeking vengeance against it's members and members of the Fraternity, including Fox and Wesley Gibson having to face the consequences of their evil crimes.
Amiradi Coolisa Facts. I got Wanted randomly from Barnes and Noble back in the day not knowing what to expect. It was definitely money well spent and put me on to Mark Millar.
Hmm... wonder why they didn't want to go the route of the comic books for the movies. I liked everything about the movie except for the magical loom bit and the fox's death.
I was a fan of the book before I saw the movie. I was hoping that the movie was going to be like the book. If you never read the book and just watch the movie, the movie is good not great but good. I think Millar was showing how we are so desensitize to violence in the media.
The plot where the villains were gathered to work together to defeat the heroes. Reminds of old man Logan where the villains did the same thing by killing their hero enemies.
Great video, as always. But allow me to humbly offer a little extra context from an older comics nerd. Millar using character "homages" is kind of a thing for him. He started his run on The Authority by introducing a villain team that were direct reflections of The Avengers. Here in Wanted, half the fun is spotting the clearly intentional Marvel/DC supervillain analogues. You mentioned some of them, but also consider The Killer=Deathstroke/Bullseye; Sucker=Venom/Parasite; Professor Solomon Seltzer=Lex Luthor/Dr. Sivana; Mr. Rictus=The Joker; Adam One=Vandal Savage; The Future=The Red Skull (with maybe a little Kang the Conqueror); The Emperor=The Mandarin; Brain-Box=Brainiac... and the list goes on with visual gags like Mr. Freeze and Ghost Rider. You can almost hear the slightly stoner conversation that inspired it, "yeah, but, like, what if the bad guys won? What if they wiped the supes out?" "Nah, Marvel and DC'd never do that." "Well, THEY wouldn't." It's a trope Millar's returned to since. in Jupiter's Legacy/Circle, the generations almost line up to DC and the younger kids to Marvel, but that's a little more tenuous. Then there's Nemesis, which is pretty much "what if Batman were, like, a BAD guy?" And you thought Wesley got up to some heinous s***....
It's the treatment of the sick subject matter as just " a thing happened, things happen, so what?" combined with the relatability if the anti-hero main character. The attitude of the narrative is "aren't these villains sick and cool?"rather than how will they be stopped, why aren't they dead already?
Never read “wanted” but now I love it. Even the over the top stuff was to emphasize the over the top hedonistic life. Very Alaster Crowley like. Thanks again for another awesome upload. Keep at it
Was going to read this book again and thought I would wait for your narration. Glad I did as it picked up on a few things I missed when I first read it all those years ago. Another book I reread recently was Supreme Power. That is a really well written book that covers a lot of topical issues and makes you think. Worth checking out and seeing if it deserves to be DannyMaltified.
So when I first started watching this video, I thought that they'd maybe taken some liberties when making the film, which I kind of liked. It's been a while since I've seen it, so it might not have aged well, and I might change my opinion on it. But to hear that not even curving bullets wasn't in the comics is.... odd, and to find out that it was an original idea for the film is actually kind of interesting. I think the concept is also interesting and feels very similar to 'The Boys', perhaps the opposite due to 'The Boys' being about a world where only Superheros exist and 'Wanted' being where Villains only existed and when watching this video there were moments where I thought "That's pretty cool" I didn't mind the bullet-time parts as it kind of showed that Wesley and his father perhaps has some kind of power, reminded me of the Winter Soldier a little. However, there were moments where I thought, "Yeah, this wouldn't be made today," and "I think I understand why they changed so much" even in the 2000s when things were pretty chill at least in terms of media entertainment. Then again, we do have 'The Boys' show, which was considered to be impossible to make into a show or film and has ended up being a well liked show, so maybe 'Wanted' (the true version) might be made, though I could still see a lot of things being taken out of it. Overall, it was pretty interesting to watch this video on the true 'Wanted'. I honestly don't know if to even say the comics and the film are even the same thing. Still, it was fun to watch.
I like how Millar used the "Old Man Logan" Comic arc as a repackaged "Wanted" arc...lol...I agree with Danny 100% Millar is a total Edgelord...I give "Wanted" a 6 out of 10...I like the world and the over-the-top action..but the water downed swearing and the obvious attempts to be edgy took its toll on me...Excellent Review Danny, love ur videos
Protagonist and hero are Not synonymous they are roles in a story the protagonist does not have to be the hero and the hero does not have to be the protagonist the protagonist is just the character through who we view the story
Tbh I don’t think the movie would’ve done well during that time if they kept it comic accurate but now with the streaming services kinda the perfect time
My boy I'm back. I've watched the video 2x and it's so many parodies of super heroes I'd have to write them all down in order to tell ya them all. This was a rly good comic to cover. It did have a lot of fkd up shit in this book but overall I liked rly liked it and would love to see expanded on. I'm not gonna say any spoilers for those who haven't watched but man... Wesley is the darkness people fear at night. I rly like that this was focused on the villians. The majority of comics never do that and when they do the villian turns good or some shit. I'd like to see more stories about villians in general. Also that last page I was like wtf.

Humpy ughhh aaa okay miss he said in a stupid way
4 min after a rocky montage from the 80s
He is killing people and learn to talk less stupid .
Scriming LONG LIVE THE QUEEN while some song from Queen is playing in the background .
The killer Queen one .
Yeah let's hope some from the trauma films or the mug busters didn't all ready made this movie to annoy Hollywood 😂 .
It was probably a finished script that they just fixed up and smacked the title Wanted on it.
Reed Tardio lol I wouldn’t even be surprised if it was true
in my opinion, some things shouldn't be adapted one to one from the source material. just because a movie or show isn't exactly like the source material doesn't make it worse, as long as the changes service the story or fix things that are not that good or frankly stupid in the original. and in my opinion, the movie is better than the comic.
it does make it worse. if the movie only going to use 1% of the source material, might as well make the movie its own fvcking IP instead of borrowing source material's name to get people to watch it, which is dumb.
Rictus is mentioned in the movie, but they say he was killed off. No morgan Freeman is more like the professor, but it is made to be an antagonist
I fully agree with you, but I also think the casual mention of rape is a bit too far over that line just because in my mind that scene is almost a throw away and has no relevance except making me fucking hate the protagonist more than I think I need too
All the racist mentions too. Wesley sucks
@@user-up8jj4wj4i go cry
@@user-up8jj4wj4i mark millar has admitted before he does it because that it is the best and cheap way to portray a villain. Make them do heinous taboo shit, rpe, torture before death, and the like, overall just twisted acts beyond just stealing money and world invasion. We cant really hold him accountable, he's a practicing catholic, he has a kid or two, showing heinous stuff through say the medium of comics doesnt really mean he condones it. I wouldnt say he's mangaka creepy. Writers sometimes want their bloat, throw away scenes with no relevance, he wanted to paint that house that way maybe you wanted it a different color, you can criticize a work but you should never say "it should be this way", just say i dont like it this way because... or "it couldve been better if"
the author is always a participant as well. they might say "i'm holding this up as a mirror to show how shitty you are" but they have to do that to themselves first. read the foreword to "a clockwork orange" for an author telling you the same thing.
“Sneaking into cribs” refers to Rictus breaking into homes. He was most likely entering other Fraternity members’ houses, betraying their trust
No they meant literal cribs as in babies
I love how the boots the killer was wearing looked very much like spidermans
What no one has noticed is that Fox is twice Wesley‘s age she is a middle aged woman!
It's Halle Berry. You wouldn't notice either.
I’ve seen
Shocker from Marvel
The Vulture, Marvel
Mr. Freeze, DC
Ghost Rider, Marvel
Magneto, Marvel
There are more but it’s crazy how many established supervillains make cameos here!
also Scott Steiner, WWE(WCW) 56:57
and knock offs
Hooded Justice, Watchmen 57:27
Darkside 58:05
And the iron-man villain the Tornado
Also sun fire (X-men) at 14:20
And Baron Zemo
My boy. The Kontent King. Every video you put out is great. You cover the heavy adult comics. Shit is great. I always tell my friends about everything you drop.
Did you get this video a day before everyone else?
Man I thought that curving the bullet stuff was so dumb when I saw that movie really glad it isn't in the comic
Same i hated the movie
And the bullet deflecting wasn't or his jumping and dodging bullets
I don't see how much of an issue it would be in a story that already is speculative which isn't 100% realistic
While I prefer the premise of the Wanted comic and the designs of some of the villains, I prefer the plot and the film way more. I think the comic wasted its potential in my opnion. I do think the film Wanted has a solid story and an enjoyable watch.
Why would Wesley need to inherit any money when he is a villain and can do whatever he wants?
If most of these villains could be stopped with a bullet then how were they able to beat their version of heroes like they must've had some real goofballs. Like they didn't have a frank castle?
Yeah there is gonna be a badass who doesn't care and kills them all.
If you dyed your hair blond, now you looks like him!! 😂😂
I really can't get over Wesley being drawn like Slim Shady 😂
Johnny is clearly Steve Buscemi, and I love that.
We not going to talk about the Scott Steiner Easter egg? 😂😂 *Holla if ya hear me*
What
I thought the same thing.
I would love for you to continue the Britt comics from Invincible.
that didn't age well
Oof
Wait what did I miss?
@@ErraticWarlock Danny covered all of invincible and brit comics last year but had to take them down even almost took down his YT too
@@ErraticWarlock haven't you heard?
Best comic book channel on TH-cam. Well done. I always get excited when you pop up in my feed 😂
I always wonder if he pronounces his own name as "Miller" or "Mill'LARR"
I’m still not 100%, but the top Google result said to pronounce it “MIL-LER” so that’s what I’ve been going with.
www.ircbpodcast.com/comic-book-industry-name-pronunciation-guide/
@@dannymalt Thx. Yeah, i see YT ppl pronounce it both ways, but i have never actually heard him pronounce his own name
If you ever find how Millar himself says it, let me know.
@@dannymalt being like Mr millar Scottish I've never heard it pronounced MillAR, its always MillER
I saw him interviewed years ago where this question came up. It's pronounced "Miller"
MANNNNN this was the 1st comic I ever read cause I kinda liked the movie then found out about the book and saw how much better it was. It got me into indie comics and all the non mainstream stuff aaaaaand
1st black guy😂
I really like the movie, partially because this is one of those comics that cannot be translated faithfully into a movie (and I really like the bullet curving). I think it'd work as a show though
I loved the comic completely.... read it about 9 years ago in my early Thirties still reminisce over growing in the 80's / 90's. To me this comic book will always be special
Mark Millar and Garth Ennis really are some of the edgiest writers
Yeah because it’s sooo realistic to get yourself out in the open instead of taking cover so you don’t take a 7.62 to the gut
Not sure this was based on real life combat tactics. Cool to know it lines up though. Also 🫡 thank you for your service sir
Only $50 Million? Guess I was wrong. I figured top tier hit men made over a million per hit.
I'm convinced, based on his different comics, Mark Millar does not know how to write endings or villains. He just knows how to come up with interesting universes.
It seems like an open secret that he only writes comics so he can sell the I.P. for a movie adaptation
I kinda liked the loom part in the movie it just felt kinda unique
This is the best comic book series I mean it has the best premise villains who wiped out all the heroes and now run the world through the shadows that’s just impressive
The sucker is obviously inspired from a DC supervillain named parasite
Im so glad you covered this, no matter how polarizing it is. Just goes to show youre not a genuine creator.
WOW i saw the movie a dozen times and when finally got the chance to read the comic i was blown away. This looks like a way better story.
Did we really see the same movie?
@@augustuzmoon3814 yeah
All the superpowered villains and the top one is guy with guns
Well spoken, to the point, and most importantly no side geek thoughts that go on for minutes. How are you getting so little views?
Dude I love your channel got hooked on it when you did "The Boys" series. Right now finishing "The Last Man" saga; please keep up the content.
Is that big poppa pump scott Steiner with sunglasses at 39:28
It would be interesting to see a faithful TV series made out of this.
That could be pretty cool
even though wanted wasn't anything like the comic it still was an epic story
Only the truly initiated know that this was a comic book before a movie
Amiradi Coolisa Facts. I got Wanted randomly from Barnes and Noble back in the day not knowing what to expect. It was definitely money well spent and put me on to Mark Millar.
I never read the comic but saw the movie 3-4 times. Very interesting how different they are!
Hmm... wonder why they didn't want to go the route of the comic books for the movies. I liked everything about the movie except for the magical loom bit and the fox's death.
I was a fan of the book before I saw the movie. I was hoping that the movie was going to be like the book. If you never read the book and just watch the movie, the movie is good not great but good. I think Millar was showing how we are so desensitize to violence in the media.
the comic eclipses the movie on all aspects but tbf in 2005 the world was not ready for how superhero-ey a faithful Wanted adaptation was
Wanted had some serious potential..
It’d be cool to see a story similar to this that isn’t such a parody..
The plot where the villains were gathered to work together to defeat the heroes. Reminds of old man Logan where the villains did the same thing by killing their hero enemies.
Also written by Mark Millar.
@@joeparrigen4982 yea that what makes his story fascinated.
What if they wiped the supes out?" "Nah, Marvel and DC'd never do that." "Well, THEY wouldn't."
It's a trope Millar's returned to since. in Jupiter's Legacy/Circle, the generations almost line up to DC and the younger kids to Marvel, but that's a little more tenuous. Then there's Nemesis, which is pretty much "what if Batman were, like, a BAD guy?" And you thought Wesley got up to some heinous s***....
2 WEEKS NOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU NEED TO HAVE AT LEAST A SMALL STORY NEXT SUNDAY!!!!! THIS IS WHAT I LOOK FORWARD TO EVERY WEEK
Love it, thank you for doing the whole story. This was the 1st Mark Millar I ever read and i never made the connection to other Mark Millar stories.
How do you like the villain concept but dont like them doing actual villain things 💀
Keep at it
As you say why didn't they just call the movie something else and avoid the franchise fees, it was entertain enough but it was not "wanted"
I found this comic book very intresting, thanks for covering it Danny.
They can bring this back as a series like the boys, and do it properly. Maybe tone it down a little, but it's a great concept.
Man you always choose some unique comics.
Did Eminem get a check for this? Haha it’s literally his face
Protagonist and hero are Not synonymous they are roles in a story the protagonist does not have to be the hero and the hero does not have to be the protagonist the protagonist is just the character through who we view the story
This is the 3rd time I've watched this and every time I see this I find new characters in the background.
That is the funniest ending I've seen in media
Never read the comic, so I totally live the movie, but im open to hear what its actually about
I like these one and done stories, this could have been a great movie. But Hollywood always drops the ball
oh Dannymalt you make me the happyiest man alive ive wated so long for this video
I take back that this isn't as worse as The Ultimates
There was a wanted game for ps3 I remember playing it and beating it
Tbh I don’t think the movie would’ve done well during that time if they kept it comic accurate but now with the streaming services kinda the perfect time
Honestly i hated the comic books. They’re edgy for no reason and not like just weird edgy, like edgy to the point of self parody
Great video!! Thank you very much. Especially the last part with your afterthought.
Wtf

I really hope they allow us to swap between 3rd and first person. Why build this awesome character model if we can’t even see him 90% of the time.
Don't know if anyone noticed this, but The Killer is supposed to be a messed up version of Spider-Man, with his uncanny marksmanship, wall clinging ability, and powerful jumping, it's pretty clear.
Really think so?
@MegaAmir46 Look at The Killer's shoes when he's wall running, and the uncanny marksmanship I equate to Spider-Man as well because Spidey is known to be a perfect marksman. Ever read the Punisher version of Spider-Man?
Listening to this, realizing the 2008 Wanted movie is not even close to the real story.... comic book is more bad ass
