Aw honey... You know you had us with your very thoughtful replacement(?) for those freaking weird beads, down to your careful attention to a complementary color scheme. That garland of wooden crosses (more apropos for a Mardi Gras parade participant) left me very confused, befuddled even. They looked like decor for an exorcism 😮 (hope I don't offend the unfathomable sensibilities of the YT censors. You just never know any more).
You could sell your versions of these overpriced boxes of meh in one of your stores, put the original boxes out where people can see them, then display your choices. And make a large line item poster showing prices... No wait. That would be a really petty thing to do, and you don't do petty. That's Charlotte Dobre's channel😂 So sorry.
Loved your choices. It was a fun video to watch. I didn’t like the things that came in the box at all…especially the cross garland even though I’m a Christian 🥰
I think in the future, you should also do the tally for straight recreating the box, too.
Don't buy the items, just add a part at the end with pictures and prices of what it would cost to directly recreate it.

Exactly what I came to say. Find and tally the items to prove your point on value, but spend the money on what you would want to have (which kinda shows that the mystery boxes are not necessarily the best use of money, as there is always the risk of hanging crosses....)

I love that you recrated it with a twist, so you would actually use the items you buy. The main issues I have with subscription boxes is when I get stuff that I'm never going to use, it feels like a big waste.
That’s when I give it to other people for their birthday or Xmas.

I think it was a great idea to NOT duplicate the Mystery Box, but rather prove that you could buy things you like and that suit your decor style for the same $150 or less. Great job!
I personally would fail at something like this because I love the taste of Crate & Barrel but if something to expensive there I will find a slightly less expensive version(I hate the word cheap folks need to replace that word with inexpensive) at target...

I love that you decide to only buy things you actually want! It is so useless to buy things you wouldn't get use out of. I agree with some other people that you can can just take pictures of the other items to just recreate and give us that price.

Yes, please thrift and recreate these boxes
If a pot doesn’t have drainage holes, then it’s just a decorative cover pot. You put your plant in its nursery pot into the cover pot to make it look pretty! Typically used for indoor plants because you wouldn’t want a pot draining onto your floor 😅 When you water the plant you either remove it from the cover pot and water it in the sink, or if the material is permitting you can water as is, but you need to make sure that there’s no water left sitting at the bottom as that will rot your roots. So you have to tip out any left over water later. Which isn’t always the easiest. You can also put pot dishes under the plant so the water sits in there rather than running onto say a wooden cover pot. I have lots like this as I like wood and bamboo planters, so I just pop a dish that fits down the bottom.
But if you’re not into real plants then you can get some fake ones and either cover them up with rocks, or coconut husk fiber, just to hide any gaps. Or use them for dried plant arrangements which seem to be having a big resurgence in popularity 😊 Hope that helps!

I’m so happy you decided to get pieces you wanted and I agree with other comments that it’d be cool to find pieces that matched and tally up the cost without buying, that way you don’t need to even stress about getting items even close. Love the pieces too, especially the lamp!

Love that you decided to sub the lamp for the lantern - not everything you receive in a subscription box is something you want or will use, so it only makes sense to buy an alternative you actually like. 🤷♀️

I like the stuff you purchased SO much better! These 'recreate it' videos are some of my favorites. I love seeing how bad of a deal some sub boxes really are. You could do them by just showing us what you would've got to duplicate the box and how much it cost, but not buy stuff. I'd love those too and it'd save you money! It's kind of fun when you see stuff for $4 that they're saying is $50 in a sub box. Thanks for taking us to Home Goods with you!

The spooky crosses should be turned into Halloween decorations. Make a "vampires coffin" and wrap that around to secure the monster inside. But I love seeing you do the box recreations. I always enjoy seeing what you find and for how much.

I've found that if you take those broken clearance items up to the register and show them how broken it is, they'll usually give it to you for an additional 50-90% off. And if they won't take any extra off, well, it didn't hurt to ask! (Ok, well, for us introverts it might hurt a little bit, but hey, sometimes being cheap requires sacrifice!😅)
Wow, Alexandria, you did an EXCELLENT job with your recreation!! So smart that you decided to buy items that you actually LIKE and can USE instead of just recreating piece for piece, and then have to spend time returning/exchanging things. I like a variety of items from BOTH...a little farmhouse and a little practical!

More important than direct replacements for each item, is the idea of corresponding items with a cohesive look. Cohesion is often difficult on a budget, so that's the bigger challenge.

I love when you recreate but if it's cheaper for you to go and recreate but not actually buy the stuff and just show us the cart I'm all for that!! If you do actually purchase i like to see what you can find in store to match and then switch out at the end for what you can actually use! So we get all wins! Love these videos. Great job!

Shopping in the U.S.A would drive me insane being on a tight budget. The shelf price isn't what you actually pay at the checkout. In Australia, the price you see is what you pay. Any tax is already included. Much easier to manage your finances when you know what you're paying up front. [rant done] Love ya Alexandria 😊
4:11 the pots without holes are called “cache pots”. You put plants in plastic nursery pots that have holes down in the decorative cache pot. That way you can bottom water if you want and it won’t make a mess.
Honestly, I love the items you chose! It looks like what a lot of these subscriptions boxes claim to do, which is give you a strong aesthetic with cohesion! The box that you received was so all over the place, I couldn't imagine who that would even be for. It would be nice if they had a person in mind while creating these mystery boxes, but it kinda feels like they just throw whatever they can find for cheap together. I love these videos, it makes me want to go to home goods and up my home decor game haha
If you like the look of big lanterns and candle holders, but never end up lighting the candles, I highly recommend getting some rechargeable LED candles, specifically a set that also has a remote control. You press one button and voilà - a room of flickering candlelight.
(A lot of them have timer functions as well, and will automatically switch off after a couple of hours.)
I love what you found. I think the choice to omit the garland was a good one. The picture is much better than the strange cross thing. ❤
I loved seeing you buy items you'll actually be using. I tend to not subscribe to boxes due to knowing most items I wouldn't use, so recreating a box in a discount store with items that are similar to what you received is always enjoyable to watch! These are my favorite videos you make :)

Love your choice of replacements, both because it’s less wasteful to get things you’ll use and because I think you’re better at picking items than the curators of these boxes. If I got the original mystery box I would have been so unhappy. You say you got close to the $150, but even with buying more expensive, higher quality items you saved almost 20%!

This video just shows why those original housewares subscription boxes are so bad. Because you really can, with intention, get things you actually want and can USE for the same or less! Your substitutions made sense, and were still on theme. Love it! It's a shame Gordman's closed. You could've spent half what you did at HomeGoods.

I love the intentional recreation of the box. I go to HomeSense and Marshall's when I can; oddly enough for food and pillows/tablecloths. If you're on any kind of special diet they're awesome for it and I found a lot of snacks and occasionally baking mixes that were under the diet my doctor put me on. The one I went to had FODMAP/Paleo/Keto foods. I'm not here to recommend dieting to anyone though; I quit because it messed with my mental wellness. Just meaning it's friendly to those on a diet and some of the snacks I kept eating because they're good.
I like the concept of adapting the recreation to stuff you can use!

Yes! I am glad you voiced what a lot of us have been thinking. The prices have gone up. The pandemic had a lot to do with it. They had to get their products from other sources and with inflation and the current economy the prices have gone up!

Your recreation videos are some of my favorites on your channel. It only makes sense to purchase items you would actually get use out of, be it at home or your store. You've successfully done it again! I really love the idea of storing coasters in that cute box btw.
I loved what you bought more than what you got in the Decor Steals box. In the decor steals box the latern is cute but not something I would use. Maybe stick out at Halloween so kids know to stop by the house. I dunno. The planters in that box, I would have to drill holes in or I would never end up using a planter. Your planters were super cute, I'd put an aleo plant in them since they were ceramic and wouldn't rust with watering. I love a lamp, that would have been great in my son's room. Those cross garlands would have gone to a donation pile because they were creepy. I loved the sketch picture. The heart box was interesting but not something that I would want or know what to do with. I love the box you got and I understood the heart connection before you explained. I love that you put coasters in it.

Former HomeGoods employee chiming in regarding the damage markdowns: we are limited by corporate how much we can mark down damaged items because we receive merchandise already discounted. However the lantern you showed should have been damaged out and trashed lol. That was too damaged.
Girl you need to start shopping at Kohl's! They have a lot of the little boxes and decorations and stuff these boxes try to convince you are worth a crazy amount of money.

Hi Alexandria Ryan I like the items you got they were a bit more expensive than the other box but they are better quality and look like the would last much longer than some of the items in that other mystery box. It totalled close to $150 which I liked better. Me personally think that other box did not look better quality nor did I think the items even came close to the $150 amount so I think your did well! 👍💛😊
I like the items you picked way better! The only thing I’d keep out of the box are the planters but I’d spray paint them white and then slightly distress them and put cute short feet on them so they don’t scratch the floor.
I liked the planters that came in the box, sad they were not quality made. Overall though, you have much better taste and your choices were superb.

I love these videos! You were talking about cost at the start, and I think it would be equally fun to watch you try to “window shop” online (like shop without buying them) for the actual items and then for stuff that’s similar but more in line with your own style! Then we could see if it was a good value in terms of what you actually get AND in terms of what you could be buying instead.
with $150, you could most definitely do better! excited to see what you were able to find.
This is great, definitely how I think you should do these box "recreations": show off whatever equivalents you can find, but then actually get what you will use/what suits your taste. It would be a waste to buy things just because they match the box closest if you still don't like/won't use the recreated item.
