Talk about over-branding, car dealerships are the worst! I remember when I bought my 2016 F150, I had to take off two plate frames, four cheapo mudflaps, two dealer-branded floor mats, two window decals and a freaking painted on logo from the dealer!
I paid $3600 for my Autohome Airtop Maggiolina Range back in 2010. Still use it today. Wife and I spent six weeks in it this summer on 2 three week trips. It too is mounted on a trailer and sets up about the same. Just gave the fabric a solid scrub and rinse as it was loaded with dust from the Oregon desert. Looks almost brand new. Love it in wind and rain, as we can leave a couple of windows open or cracked near the top, along with a USB charged mini fan to keep the air circulating through the night while keeping the rain out. Hello brad, how are you? We are very happy you like our products and hope you had amazing trips with it. We put a lot of effort in designing and manufacturing the tents, and it's a good thing to know about the tiny details that make them top quality (like a couple of ones you already noticed), so we wanted to share our thoughts: - The Fiberglass ribs are a key design feature to make the shell stronger (you can press around the rib to feel it gets stronger) and increase aerodynamics. This way it's stronger and saves some mileage. - The decals. Actually in US we normally send the tent with more decals, some people even ask for extra, but now our tents are shipped with decals in front and back only. The idea is that when on the street, people can see the brand from the back and front of your vehicle. - The weather stripping is glued and pressure attached, it won't come loose alone. But sometimes when you're closing the tent your hand might slip and hit the strips, forcing a little. And it's ok, just like you said, some glue and it's fixed. - Ladder. It's interesting you mentioned because the typical telescoping ladder accumulate water inside, and in cold weather the water freeze and it was almost impossible to open. Along with that, normally when moving inside the tent the car goes up and down, sometimes moving the ladder and knocking it down. So our design was made to solve both of these issues. - Fan. If you contact your distributor he can fix it for you in a couple of minutes, either way if there's anything we can do to help let us know. - Place for shoes outside. We have an accessory called Adventure Bag that was made just for that. It attaches on the side of the ladder and also can be used as a backpack. - Wind. From that video it seems the struts of the bigger window (or door) weren't secured. When opening our tents, you should push the struts against the wall so it gets really tight. That way the walls should be straight and should resist even more windy conditions with less noise. - Closing - When closing the tent, leave the door zippers open in the red mark, so the air circulates better. Also, to keep your RTT preserved, try to tuck the fabric above the struts. Try not to leave anything above the struts when closing (mattress or fabric). Hope it's all clear and if you have any doubts or need anything let us know. Nice adventures

Brad, great video an content with TrailRecon! I've had a James Baroud Tent for over 5 years. With the gel coat many have had issues, but if you keep it clean and waxed one should have no problems. Biggest design flaw with the James Baroud tents is they will wear through the thick canvas fabric around the edges leaving one with a significant leaks within about a year of ownership. James Baroud claims they have a 5 year warranty, but they do NOT stand behind their tents.

Great video, Brad. Thank you. Since you asked, I think you might like the Roofnest Falcon Pro. It has the flat surface you’re asking for, it’s lower profile, though it will still hold your bedding and ladder, it has a shoe bag, and it comes with an exterior rack that will accommodate traction boards, bikes, or other light items. The mattress is decent too. The two negatives are cost ($4000+) and weight (180 pounds).
Hello, Just a small consideration: when closing the tent, open the door at least halfway and you will find that it closes much easier and in addition the closure is not left out.
Baroud Grand Raid XXL since 2014 here. Never had an issue with it. Upgraded from an ARB tent (which I think started it all). As someone who sleeps with his elbows out, the XXL is sweet when the girl joins. The latches have sprung nipples on it that makes working in cold weather a bit painful. I added 300W solar on mine which is streamlined due to the recess at the rear for additional storage.

Hi Brad! Nice review and a big Hello from Germany!! Have Evasion XXL … the one with the Cargo bay! JB has the largest RTT as Hard Shell on the market. Its 1.60 m x 2.20 m and is good for three people. Best thing about it besides it’s size is the fact that you can leave loads of stuff in it. It’s absolutely watertight! Easy work around for tucking the fabric in is to use some rubber straps in the inside. Attache it to the zippers and it will pull the stuff into the tent! I installed stronger gas struts inside to flip open even with two surfboards and two heavy bags on it! I am jeaulouse of your overlanding areas in the states! Bit tricky over here! Keep on rocking! Red gel coat would probably have faded but would have looked cool! Air under the Solar panel is actually a good thing for efficiency but would have a little more wind resistance. Thanks for the overview Brad looks like a nice RTT.
You're probably right about the fading. And yes, for cooling, air under the panels would be nice, but I've seen panels fly off of vehicle too often too not want to secure them down as best as possible with low wind drag.
@@TrailRecon Brad, you have been an inspiration for me for my channel, I'm more Ham Radio but I do have a well built 1987 Toyota 4runner that iwas going to mount a flat solar panel to the roof but for now I will just stick to portable foldout panels. Nice RTT. There's a company here in Australia called Drifta. They make a RTT that I like the look of. It opens sideways rather than front to back which looks like it offers a decent amount of interior space.
A little tip, when you are tucking in the tent, semi latch one of the back clips whilst you tuck the sides in. visaversa on the other side. It makes it much easier.
We have spent most of the pandemic watching youtubes on roof top tent. We were pretty convinced we were going to buy the ikamper, than the roofnest, then the cvt…a few others. We finally have ended up ordering the Bushcompany alpha. New Jeep is at the rail yard in Toledo. Once it gets here. We Will see how it is. Heavy tent. Requires a robust rack (using the maximus 3 roof rack). Also the bushcompany 270 xt awning. Really looking forward to overlanding. It was my wife’s idea. We havent camped in 20 years. But really excited to be getting back out.
I like this tent. However, I think the CVT Mt. Hood would be more suitable for my pocketbook. I am looking forward to seeing it in person at Overland Expo before I make the decision. As a complete RTT newb, I am wondering how the installation process works. Shipping the tent seems stressful and costly, as opposed to having it installed at a dealer. For me, a dealer would be a day and a half drive. Silly problem to have, but that has been holding me back alittle. Thanks for the update! Glad you mentioned 'Regina approved' I am right there with ya girl!! If it's comfortable, it will be used more.
I’ve had the CVT mountaineer for 5 years. My wife my 4 year old, my 11months and myself sleep up there with no issues. I love the thing If you have specific questions let me know.
@@Joes-Adventures71 yea thats the smaller 2-3 person tent. If you need the extra room go for the 4 person. Sooo much space and the mattress is extremely comfortable
I enjoy everything this channel is about, it would absolutely awesome to see you on trails some day. My 2021 Colorado just conquered Mu's Nemesis on Drummond Island here in Michgian this past weekend.
I am in the market for a RTT and considered this tent but the only think I didn't like beside the price. :-). Is that it does not have a rain fly by the windows. This means that when it rains, you need to keep the tent fully close so that water does not get in. I plan to use the RTT on all weather conditions and not sure this tent will do well in rainy or snowy condition. Great review. Thanks
Totally agree with too much branding on products and vehicles. The Aussie trailer would also look better with decal/stripe removal. Totally understand though if manufacturers are heavily discounting or giving the product for free. Good honest review. Thanks once again from Melbourne Australia.
I just got my GoFsr Evolution. I love it. I’ve been trying to sell the 63’ high country but I don’t think the market is here in Texas for one. Haven’t had any luck lol. I don’t see many rigs here in Houston.
love these demo on your equipment, this one may be out of my price range but at least I know what high dollar tents come with, a little off topic, what do you prefer cooking on the Scottle (sp) or a 2 burner Coleman stove ?
The big negative for me who does not pull a trailer is loss of roof storage space. With All-Cab gen 3.1 I get 110 lb/ 50 kg of storage space for Solar panel, Max Track and fire wood (total used about 66lbs/ 30 kg)
That’s a nice tent. I do prefer a lower profile. I have a Free Spirit Odyssey. It’s really nice but I could probably live without it. I previously had a Smittybilt and learned that here in Arkansas the trails get tight and low profile is your friend. Thanks for the honesty in your reviews!
Hi Brad , love your videos . Nearly miss any of yours. Unluckily I live in Germany where Overlanding is kind of impossible and being E3 member doesn’t make any sense. Anyway stay healthy during the times , best regards from Bavaria.
The sleeping pad thickness/comfort is the stickler for me. I can sleep in a Gazelle tent on a cot with a 6" Exped mattress for a fraction of the cost. Yes, it takes a few more minutes to put away....So many rooftop tents have these little 2" pads. Like sleeping in a box of rocks.....The best selling point to me for this tent.
I think the gazelle tent is a great option and I really like how quickly they setup. A 6" mattress I imagine is very comfortable. How long does it take you to inflate and deflate it?
@@TrailRecon It self inflates part way by just opening the filler valve and then three or four minutes to top off using the pump. I usually just roll it out and open the valve before setting up my tent. Deflating is easy. You can set the valve in the deflate position, roll it up squeezing the air out. The valve does not allow it to reinflate during the process.
Putting the tent away reminds me of our old VW Camper. Thanks for the walk around, seems like a great tent. We were disappointed with our soft shell tent's mattress (we added a blow up mattress that added to the set up and put away time) so maybe we'll check this one out or another hard shell that isn't $4000! Glad to See Rhino is up in San Marcos.
I agree with you that it is very pricey. However I've seen your review of it along with many others and everyone seems to agree that it's the most comfortable. I therefore think it's worth it
I am going to be utilizing this tent in Fairbanks during the -40F winter for a week long trip. I wonder how the weather stripping and the metal brackets would hold up. Also how well it retains heat.
Great Agreed, moving and traveling for long periods. Gotta have a quick and easy tent. I need one for winter. I plan on traveling strictly for ski season :) also wondering about wind and rain on this. But also, you have wife, and son. So I guess you can’t all sleep in that. What do you do when traveling together? I’ll have same issue But what I really want to know is. What you got in that trailer? I can’t decide on a set up. A: build out my Tacoma overland style no trailer B: get a trailer So let’s see that off road trailer !
Not for me but I definitely like your product reviews! The Velcro would be a no-go item for me as I would wake up my wife way too many tunes going to the bathroom!! Lol. Cheers!
How old is this tent? For awhile now they've had vents on the sides of the lower shell. I don't see them on your tent. Anyway, just ordered ours! Very excited! Wish they were still only $4k lol!
Hi from New Zealand! Love your channel, so inspiring. I'd be keen on your opinion of trailer campers. Australian mad Cub Drifter or Ultimate Nexus 360 type of thing. You're already towing the X1 and to have an all in one with the tent makes so much sense to me. Keep up the great work and entertainment. Cheers, Bruce Miller
lack of using top for solar panel, racks, storing small items, outside shoe storage is a game killer for my roof top tent needs. However a good review of the product.
Great review Brad. I always like to see other products reviewed. I really like my Bundutec RTT. I've had it almost 3 years now and spent many nights in it. Can't be beat for ease of setup and takedown (electrically driven). Also has a great double bed size 4" thick mattress. I store bedding, pillow and ladder in the tent. I've been from NC to the Rockies. Twice now and camped all along the way. I've also used on the outer banks of NC and only once did I feel the need to put it down and crawl in the Jeep. That was when my phone blew up at 3 in the morning with severe weather warnings on the outer banks. The Bundutec is just a little less expensive than the Baroud and weighs just a few pounds more. Thanks
I’ve had a number of RTT’s ranging from a basic soft shell smittybuilt, to a premium Treeline Outdoors soft shell, up to hardshell models. I purchased them all pre-owned and lightly used for decent prices. As I got more experienced in off-roading/overlanding, I started to realize that I was really paying for the “cool factor” of a roof top tent, and that the functionality really wasn’t there for me. Getting up in the middle of the night is a pain, getting changed in an awkward half sitting position is a pain, getting dogs up and down is a pain, and taking it down just to continue exploring was a pain! I’ve since switched to hub tent from Gazelle, and couldn’t be happier. 1/10 the price, 30 seconds to setup, room to stand, etc. I think the appeal of RTT’s has finally worn off for me!
There’s still function. I put myself in the rtt and dogs in the truck bed. So your argument is invalid. It had a purpose even if you fail to see it. Love dogs but would never sleep with them.
@@yabadoo8317 I wouldn’t say I’m arguing, and wouldn’t say it’s invalid. We’ve adopted dogs with neurological conditions and from rescues. They have a lot of anxiety at night and leaving them in the back of the truck wouldn’t go well.
you always give a great honest review oh boy 4000 by a lot of gas lol is nice tent , I’ve always been out in the open kind of camping rain or snow a cot a bag a tarp etc nothing like waking up to 5-10 or colder degrees on a cold morning 😂😂 good stuff as always be safe 👍👍👍
Thank you, really appreciate that. I've slept out in the open enough during my time active duty that I guess I prefer a little more glamping these days... not ashamed to admit it! LOL!
@@TrailRecon I concur! I’m done sleeping on the ground. I really like the idea of being up & away from the critters and not having to deal with roll-up mattresses and wet/muddy ground cloths.
Great video. Love to see your reviews. We just installed our new Alucab 3.1 tent. We had the softshell for a couple years now and it was time for something new. I guess we will try to make a video about it. Cheers Alex
Oh also, are you going to be at the overland expo in Colorado at the end of the month? I've been super looking forward to it and it would be great if I got to see you there. Thanks again
It’s definitely a great tent .. I much rather have it on the jeep then the camper trailer and have a larger tent on the camper since it was built to pretty much add any size rooftop tent
looks good but seems like it doesnt really shut properly (can see along the seams that its not completely closed at any point) and the fan is already broken? i dunno...
I was on their website the other day and saw they have a version for space on top to pack extra gear. I believe that would have a flat surface. Love the videos! 🤩
That small cargo are might work, but there is a lot of real-estate on the top of a roof top tent, so being able to mount a 160 watt panel would be a huge benefit, I think you'd only be able to squeeze a small panel in that cargo area... but better than nothing.
Thank you as always, my wife and I were thinking about the “ikamper” roof top tent. Have you had any experience with that one the cost is about $3,500.
Excellent video Brad, thank you. I have researching about roof tents for a drive from London to Capetown. Have done long drives before but not much experience with camping so looking at hard-shell options that are easy to pack up. Thinking about JB Space XL for Land Cruiser 120. Did you ever feel the need for windows overhangs during the rains, do they make much of a difference?
Stupid question, if I may please: Where do you place your head when laying down in the tent? At the front or at the back? Do you feel more protected if the head is at the front?
I am curious where you picked up the Space standard size in black for $4100? Every where I look they want $4900. I am considering putting this tent on a mid-height rack over my 6.5 foot truck bed. Would there be anything that would prevent me from using the back window as a door? It seems it would be easy to use the open tailgate to enter and exit the back of the tent. I would appreciate your thoughts.
So agree on the over-branding going on. We wind up taking logos off of things as well.

Would love to hear your opinion on the iKamper Mini.
I had the Smittybilt for years, just switched to the Tuff Stuff Alpha tent and its absolutely amazing so far
We still rocking the shhhhmitty, works well, I think it's our 3rd year.
The tuff stuff alpha 2 looks pretty cool and more in my price range.
@@res0zn4c oh yea mine was still great but growing family drove the need for a bigger tent
Thank you and hope to see you out there some day!
Thanks
Great review. Love that you have owned 5 other tents and you compare. I would love a comparison of this to a Roofnest. thanks.
Totally agree with too much branding on products and vehicles. The Aussie trailer would also look better with decal/stripe removal. Totally understand though if manufacturers are heavily discounting or giving the product for free. Good honest review. Thanks once again from Melbourne Australia.
I lov these products reviews and the trips. Thanks for making this great content.
Glad you like them!
You should try the RedTail Overland RTT next! That seems like an intense setup!
I just got my GoFsr Evolution. I love it. I’ve been trying to sell the 63’ high country but I don’t think the market is here in Texas for one. Haven’t had any luck lol. I don’t see many rigs here in Houston.
Try the Skycamp 2.0, 😉👍
love these demo on your equipment, this one may be out of my price range but at least I know what high dollar tents come with, a little off topic, what do you prefer cooking on the Scottle (sp) or a 2 burner Coleman stove ?
Well, by wife likes the Skottle and I think I prefer the standard burner stove.... pros and cons to both.
The big negative for me who does not pull a trailer is loss of roof storage space. With All-Cab gen 3.1 I get 110 lb/ 50 kg of storage space for Solar panel, Max Track and fire wood (total used about 66lbs/ 30 kg)
Hey Brad. How do like this compared to your ROAM hard shell tent?
I'm sure have a little experience sleeping on thin Mattresses Master Chief! Great Video brother.
WHILE LOOKING FOR POP UP TENTS I FOUND YOUR X1N TRAILER VIDEO : )
Oh wow that is really impressive and pretty easy to use! Great review
Great review Brad. Thanks for sharing. Maybe you can try out and IKamper some time?
Autohome maggiolina rooftop tent from Italy,,,,great videos...regard peter from Belgium 🇧🇪.
The best! I've had one for 5 years
Great
Agreed, moving and traveling for long periods. Gotta have a quick and easy tent.
I need one for winter. I plan on traveling strictly for ski season :) also wondering about wind and rain on this.
But also, you have wife, and son. So I guess you can’t all sleep in that. What do you do when traveling together? I’ll have same issue
But what I really want to know is. What you got in that trailer? I can’t decide on a set up.
A: build out my Tacoma overland style no trailer
B: get a trailer
So let’s see that off road trailer !
Nice video. Thinking you should do a review on GFC Superlite
IKamper "Skycamp" comparison vs James Baroud and your final choice thoughts.
An updated overland gear video would be awesome! 💪🏽
Nice video, Brad! Thanks!
Brad. Love the National parks y-shirt you are wearing in this video. Do you remember where you got it, or have any links to it? Thanks in advance.
Did Brad just say, “be like?” My mind has officially been blown 🤯 Great video and review nonetheless.
If you are going to use it every weekend during the summer - the expense is worth it. If you are going across country that would be great for it.
If this RTT was $2,500 - $3,000, it would be a much better value and could warrant having those defects mentioned in this video.
I would love to see you running the Tuff Stuff Alpha RTT!
Have you tried the James brood awning the 270 awning that has the axis tunnel
I Kamper vs James Baroud comparison?
Great video, would like to see the roofnest sparrow xl. It’s about $1000 less than the James. Seems well built and what I’ll most likely end up with.
It would be nice if that fan could be operated from the outside, so it would pull a slight vacuum when stowing, and keep the fabric sucked in.
It would nice if the little lamp can be charged from the solar panel.
Is the top shell insulated?
Can the fabric be removed so it can be washed?
How about the Alucab hard shell roof top tent? I believe price point is similar or a bit more than the JB. Great review. Thank you.
They make a great tent, might be cool to try it out.
I’d like to see the Alucab as well. Love Josh’s setup. It’d be cool to see their RTT products.
Add me to the list as well
I love my All-Cab. Best tent to carry 110lbs/ 50kg weight on the tent. I have solar panel, Max Track and space for carrying wood. Works just fine.
@@boymeetsbush8232 Hmmm…I better look into that one.
Come to the light!
Oh ya, but that's a whole different conversation. I enjoy sleeping in my ShiftPod ground tent, but kind of depends on the situation.
There’s still function. I put myself in the rtt and dogs in the truck bed. So your argument is invalid. It had a purpose even if you fail to see it. Love dogs but would never sleep with them.
@Phillip Connolly well said!
@@yabadoo8317 I wouldn’t say I’m arguing, and wouldn’t say it’s invalid. We’ve adopted dogs with neurological conditions and from rescues. They have a lot of anxiety at night and leaving them in the back of the truck wouldn’t go well.
Hi Brad, thanks for sharing this video. I have a question, Which one is better for overland, Pop up Camper Hawk on DCab or JB Space roof top ten?
When are you going to do a top 10 overland vehicles, I’m a big Jeep TJ guy, but also love the newer Jeeps.
Free spirit rec.? I’d like to see a review of their new line of tents.
you always give a great honest review oh boy 4000 by a lot of gas lol is nice tent , I’ve always been out in the open kind of camping rain or snow a cot a bag a tarp etc nothing like waking up to 5-10 or colder degrees on a cold morning 😂😂 good stuff as always be safe 👍👍👍
Thank you, really appreciate that. I've slept out in the open enough during my time active duty that I guess I prefer a little more glamping these days... not ashamed to admit it! LOL!
@@TrailRecon oh definitely ,you have a awesome set up for sure I should change before I become bear food 😂😂😂
@@TrailRecon I concur! I’m done sleeping on the ground. I really like the idea of being up & away from the critters and not having to deal with roll-up mattresses and wet/muddy ground cloths.
Yes to the red
Great video. Love to see your reviews. We just installed our new Alucab 3.1 tent. We had the softshell for a couple years now and it was time for something new. I guess we will try to make a video about it. Cheers Alex
Can’t go wrong with a James Baroud. They been in the business for over 25yrs.
Oh also, are you going to be at the overland expo in Colorado at the end of the month? I've been super looking forward to it and it would be great if I got to see you there. Thanks again
Yes I am!
Try out the new ikamper mini coming out in 2022. Give us a review.
The review i’ve been waiting for. Honest and constructive, well done Brad! 👍
Hey Brad what about the 23 zero tents?
It’s definitely a great tent .. I much rather have it on the jeep then the camper trailer and have a larger tent on the camper since it was built to pretty much add any size rooftop tent
Can you go topless on your Jeep if you have it on the Jeep?
Brad where did you buy the tent from. If you have the link I would appreciate if.
23Zero tents. Let me know about their mattress. I have heard it's pretty awesome.
Definitely better than the old shelter half and IsoMat back in the day Doc !!!!
100%!
looks good but seems like it doesnt really shut properly (can see along the seams that its not completely closed at any point) and the fan is already broken?
Hey David. We moved on from considering the ikpamper because reviews about mattress and condensation.
Great review!
What wheels on the wrangler? Love them
Good to see you with JEEP
I'd like to see demos on Eezi-awn tents.
Stupid question, if I may please: Where do you place your head when laying down in the tent? At the front or at the back? Do you feel more protected if the head is at the front?
You can put your head on either end, but it's just more comfortable on the tall side so easier to sit up.
Nice! How much for the trailer?
