    "The Europeans drive on the right. The British drive on the left and the Maltese drive in the shade!" - old Maltese proverb!

    Malta and Cyprus are weird countries as they differ from the rest of Europe. Not only they follow UK in terms of driving (left side), but also the electrical socket and plug!!

    Right lane hogging is not really a problem; it's an infuriating habit that a lot of Maltese have, so you don't really stand out.
    Nice video: I work on the top floor of the 5 or 6 floor building (depending from what side you approach it) with the Vodafone sign, so I drive part of this route every day.

    Liked the vid! I drive these roads everyday ....... but have you ever tried driving during peak hours (between 07:00AM - 09:00AM and 04:00PM - 06:00PM) ? Peak hours in Malta are atrocious ....... a 10 minute journey can take you around 30-45 minutes during peak hours ....

    Impressive, wipers didn't go on by mistake even once.

    • @SeverityOne
      @SeverityOne 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, no. They are on the same side regardless what side the steering wheel is on. Same with the pedals. The gear stick, however... that's another issue.

      Severity One not necessarily. Japanese brands have their stalks reversed for pretty much every market except the RHD euro market (probably for consistency across euro vehicles). You can easily verify this with a simple image search. That Yaris at 4:27 is, judging by the license plate, a JDM used import (goes by the name of Toyota Vitz), and will have its stalks reversed from a euro spec Yaris. Same in Australia, for example their Holden Commodore has its stalks reversed from a LHD Opel Insignia (naturally) but also the corresponding RHD Vauxhall Insignia

    • @SeverityOne
      @SeverityOne 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @A A What I noticed is that Japanese cars have them reversed compared to European ones. I can't for the life of me remember what type of Japanese car it was that I drove, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't a JDM import. Anyway, most cars here are either European or Japanese, but I only drive European ones. Not because I don't like Japanese or anything, it just happened that way. Even on the continent, it's always been Opel, Volkswagen, or something similar.

    It's easy... all us Brits are born naturals :-D
    Whoops... old habits die hard... I see a bit of right-hand lane hogging going on :-)
    I’m ambidextrous and also suffer from Left-right confusion so find it natural to drive a left-hand or right-hand drive car on either side of the road... very handy as I drive both in the UK and on the Continent :-)

    • @erka001
      @erka001  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The hard thing wasn't really the left side driving, but the right hand side vehicle, doing the same gear change but with the other hand, rear view mirror on the other side, turning back for reversing etc. Also the signing in Malta is strange, they are very late and small.

    • @ZilinaSK
      @ZilinaSK 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You did well for your first time; some people wouldn’t even dare to try :-)
      As Malta was ruled by the British until 1964, they pretty much have the same small road signs we have. You spend most of your time trying to spot the tiny speed limit signs at the side of the road rather than concentrating on your driving... it's a real bugbear of mine :-/

  • @austprodriver
    @austprodriver 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The road signs are strikingly similar to those found in the UK and Gibraltar, although Gibraltar is left hand drive. Gibraltar is more similar to the UK in terms of the houses, and street name signs though. You've done not too badly for a first timer driving a right hand drive car, but, as ZilinaSK highlighted, I also noticed some right hand lane sitting, too. But don't worry, here in Australia, we have those kinds of drivers ALL the time, that have never driven left hand drive cars. I call them 'Speed Kills' serial do-gooders, that don't want anyone overtaking them, because they think they're doing the right speed.

    • @erka001
      @erka001  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, but that was mainly when I thought I needed that lane, I don't like hogging the fast lane either :) sometimes you really need binoculars to read these signs. And a lot of signs just say some town name for each lane, so it was a bit difficult. But it does look like the UK, well it only bacame independent in 1964, I think. Cheers

    One thing I hate the most about being a Brit is driving on the left. I wish we changed to the right like Sweden did in the 1960s. Living in Germany for 2 1/2 years with a right hand drive car was not good. However, our cars are very very cheap compared with mainland Europe :-)

    • @britiw
      @britiw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MisterHughie yeah, but fuel prices, road taxes and insurance rip you right off
      I'd rather pay once large sum of money for a car and go on cheaper maintenance

    Just did this for the first time a few months ago. You took the same route that I did to my hotel in Valletta. Why did you go back the way you came? Driving isn't too bad as long as you have a GPS... The roads can get very slippery when it rains too.

      Hi, strangely enough, that only took a little while to get used to, for me the hard thing was knowing where the front left of the car was, from the right side seating position. Which was never a problem the other way around before.

    Aww... where are my beautiful 1950s and 60s Fords? When I was there in the mid-90s it was the last redoubt for (then) 30+ year old classics in pristine condition! Everyone in Malta seems to have junked their old cars, gone out and bought new superminis. :(

    Thanks for the video...going there in Sep 2017. Can I ask two questions: 1) Is the gear shift the same as in the U.S. but you just have to do it with your left hand, or is it a backwards "H" shift. 2) Do you only get in the right lane when you're passing or speeding? (Opposite of U.S.?) Thank you for your help.

    • @erka001
      @erka001  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rebecca!
      1.) The gear shift is exactly the same, that's sort of the confusing bit, you would expect it to be mirrored. The gears are the same as in a normal stick shift, but you're doing it from the other side with your other hand, which is what makes it weird. So now 1st gear is away from you etc.
      2.) Yes, the basic principle is cruise left, pass right. As you can see I forget about this in the beginning of the video.
      But here are the things I didn't expect:
      I did not know where the left front of my car was. I don't normally have a problem with that on the normal side. I have a video when I really hit a curb :))
      Whenever you try to look in the rear view mirror, it's not there
      Signs are really small, late, and very faded, take a gps
      If you never drove in Europe, know that some of the highway code is different from the US (e.g.: no four way stops, but right hand rule)
      that's all I can think of now :) have fun!
