  • When Thames flows fast for an inflatable kayak, there are still alternative waterways in and around London.
One of them is Grand Union Canal, which starts from Paddington Station and goes all the way up to Birmingham. The Paddington arm is a convenient kayaking route as it is lock-free until Cowley near Uxbridge.
We took our Gumotex inflatable kayaks to Grand Union Canal and traveled from Paddington Station to Hayes & Harlington Station, in vicinity of which we had parked earlier.
A certainly great day spent on the water.
    I hope you enjoy.
    Let's go paddling!

Super vid. It's nice to see the area where I used to live from the perspective of a kayak. In addition, the commentary is a nice enrichment of the video. Best Regards Mike

Thanks very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
That might be the way to go from now: long touring vids would stay without commentary for those who want to enjoy long and peaceful trips but highlights would receive commentary and some annotations. 😁

The Collective old oak in West London used to be my put in spot. Used to do similar route up to Lake farm county park (few minutes after Bull's bridge) and back. Or up to Victoria park return. Recently did Lime house basin up to Pickett's lock. Take Regents canal up to Victoria park and take right on Hertford Union canal what leads on to river Lee. It had 5 or 6 locks to carry over. Before Tottenham Hale or just after Markfield park river Lea splits in two. Navigable and right side. If you take right you're in for a treat. proper jungle. You can only get up to green metal wall. you can get out before metal wall (after bridge), climb steep bank and carry kayak about 20 meters over to navigable side.

So your launch point was just a moment before our first pause spot. 😉
Thank you Kris, that's several insights and ideas for potential trips in a single comment. Who knows, maybe we'll stumble upon each other too. 😁

Like that Tom. How many locks were there to get around?

      @@grahamashby1409 Hey Graham,
Between Paddington Station and Hayes there are no locks. 22km of uninterrupted flat water paddling.
First lock is only at the beginning of Uxbridge, and that's another 6km from Hayes.

      @@grahamashby1409 Happy paddles! 😁
Just don't go eastwards into Little Venice. That's where Regent's Canal starts and that one is a bit more problematic. Stevie Wyatt paddled there, I won't. 😅
