I love that they used the existing pot - simply putting in holes, and then adding the stones. Such a resourceful idea but simple, and a gorgeous outcome! Love the rain chain, and really enjoy This Old House.

I'm 32, been watching this old house since Steve Thomas took over. (Maybe I watched 1 season with Bob Vila). You guys raised me on Saturday evenings from 4-6pm on PBS with all those DIY shows...
I'm glad Roger is taking a step back from the show a little bit and taking more care of himself this upcoming 41st season. I wish nothing but the best for you. Take care.

Who ever put that drain in the gutter didn't skimp on the sealant. There's going to have to be a half inch of water in the gutter before it will even be high enough to go over the glob.

    • @btrswt35
      @btrswt35 6 ปีที่แล้ว +38

Jonathan Castaneda No. The gutter and the outlet (the piece inside the gutter with all the sealant around it) shown here is aluminum. It can hold water and it won't corrode.
Old fashioned box gutters (gutters that are actually built into the roof) with terne steel could rust. Those have to be periodically painted inside to help protect the steel. Generally, it's not good to have obstructions like that for the sake of proper flow.

These actually do work. I have used them on the house and the garage. One fix I did, if the chain isn't long enough to go into the pot, simply attache a smaller section of regular chain to the bottom, set that into the pot or bucket. I use a bucket with a drip irrigation hose attached so water collects and then gets dispersed into the planter, great for summer when the rain is sporadic. For winter it has a dual spigot, I simply open the second spigot for winter when the rains are more prolonged.

Wow ive been looking for a solution like this for a long time. Have a downspout over concrete and need to either collect the rain or get it out to soil. But that requires something to hold the downspout. This is perfect!! Straight down into a rain barrel or something.

Roger Cook passed away a few weeks ago, and you can definitely tell something isn’t right in this video from several years ago. He’s moving slowly, looks stiff, and sounds tired. He always seemed like the quiet one on the show, but worked very hard and created some beautiful landscapes and hardscapes. Rest in Peace, Roger.

And instead of mulch that looks like compost that will still spatter. Heavier bark mulch might work better against the house.

How can rain water be moved away from the foundation. The roof is flat and projects about 4’ from the side of the building. The holes where the down spouts were are about 3’ from the side of the building. Over the years the rock that is directly under the 4’ projection of the roof has receded into the earth and the water pools and is absorbed along side the foundation. The lawn that is +4’ from the building is now higher than the bed of rocks.
I like the idea of the rain chain but how can we move the water

I made a chain exactly like that for my parents house and I was 19.
Last year when I saw the movie wolverine ? For the first time the new one where this Chinese house had a water chain and I thought how badass it looked.
And it goes good with our house Cuz we have rusted fences and alot of greens and chains and a same exact roof in front of our door so I had the idea for it because there wasnt space to add the gutter pipe either no walls and the chimney in the way so I bought some chain and made one exactly like this with chipped rocks and pebbles and it worked perfect.
Only bad thing that happened was a squirrel tried climbing it and got his tail stuck.

It looks like early on-set Parkinson's... My Co worker has it and it looks exactly like Rogers movements... There is DBS which my Co worker had it down... He was a different person after he had the surgery... Not a cure but it brings back some quality of life

How do these work in winter when covered in ice? It seems the weight would either pull it down or pull the gutter right off the house.

Maybe I missed it. So install the rain chain in the gutter or roof itself?

Still getting way too much splash in the last portion of the chain. Maybe a smaller hole in the gutter would slow the flow.

Can this also be installed by a front concrete steps, close to the house that has a basement? We get a ton of water off our roof into this one cutter and downspout.

Would this work on a roof that has no gutter. I have a point on the house where my front entry roof meets the rest of the hour and its like a waterfall whenever I get rain. Thank you for your response in advance

it probably wouldnt work as well as this did because the existing gutter concentrated all the water to the one spot where the chain is if your roof just happens to push all the rain water to one spot it could help maybe if you put 2 chains next to each other it will help but it probably wont get everything

I have a rain chain. My problem with my chain is that it keeps clogging up with shingle’s grit. How can I solve this problem?
