    Great Channel. I'm enjoying your setups. I do have to say that these long cycle periods seem a little crazy to me though. I've kept shrimp on and off for the past 17 years. Over that time period I guess I've set up at least 7 shrimp tanks without any problems. In the past I have generally set up new tanks with an inch or so of Fluval Stratum (sometimes with layer of beach sand on top). I have only used the beach sand with Neos. All of my shrimp tanks have been set up with sponge filters. My Neos have had either well water or remineralized RO. My Caridina have always received remineralized RO. I insta cycle my tanks by taking a mature dirty sponge filter from one of my fish aquariums, and squeezing it out into the new tank. This has always worked for me without any problems. Most of my tanks have been relatively short lived because they have been set up in my classroom or at my summer house, but I have not had lots of shrimp deaths and I have had lots of baby production. I'm preparing to set up three 9 gallon cubes in my classroom. This time I'm going to use a thin layer of lava gravel for a Neo tank and a Sulawesi tank and a thin layer of Fluval Stratum for a Caridina tank. Each tank will also have an UGF filled with 1/8th inch lava pebbles for the Neos and the Sulawesi, and with Fluval Stratum for the Caridina. These will all be insta cycled with the shrimp being added within a week of setting up the tank. I don't expect problems but I'll let you know if I do.
    Cheers,
    Chris

    People make keeping shrimp SO complicated. I breed shrimp that i sell to the trade, mostly crystals and galaxies, and you can have a tank set up and running perfectly well in 48hrs. Ph 5.4 is so unnecessary, 6.5 - 6.8 is optimal, UGF filters, tried them exactly the same as yours and they dont have any advantages over sponge filters. Bacterial powders? Again, innecessary. Powdered tetramin bioactive grows biofilm much faster.

      Of course, if you are fine with keeping your shrimp in a higher pH you don't need to use ugf filter and aqua soil at all because their main purpose is to lower your pH. From my experience caridina shrimp don't do well in the high pH that's why I like to use a combination of ugf with ada Amazonia to lower my pH below 6. Bacterial powder is optional but I noticed a huge boost of biofilm and dust algae growth in my tanks when I use it.

    • @markclayden7654
      @markclayden7654 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ShrimpMania Thats great, but you should never keep caridina below PH 6.2. Optimal is 6.5 - 6.8. Shrimp shell is made of Calcium Carbonate which reacts to acid, it makes their shell soft which leads to moulting problems and is a sure fire way of opening up your shrimp to potential disease. It also causes infertility problems and lower hatch rates and low reproduction. Keeping Caridina in water lower than PH 6 also decreases their lifespan by up to 50%. I don't know where this worrying trend of trying to keep shrimp in highly acidic water has come from, but NO invertibrates in the wild come from highly acidic water regions because they require calcuim to build their shell.

    Hey Leon, such a great video! 7 days is amazing! thanks for pointing out that ammonia is less toxic in lower ph, i've heard it a few times but first time seeing it. I'm a little bit weary about 7 days, but i might give it a try as i need to reset a bunch of tanks soon. Did 4 already. Happy to see the golden galaxy/yellow pintos doing well for you, over 50 that's amazing, I had 6 berried in the summer but only 1 baby survived, kinda (later found out the pH was too high) now I have 6 left and moved them to a new tank and hope they'll breed for me. Keep up the great owrk and can't wait till the next update!

    • @ShrimpMania
      @ShrimpMania  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ray, definitely try it, just use a cheap shrimp in the beginning and then you can replace them in a few weeks, that's how I do it now. Good luck with yellow galaxies I hope they'll breed soon.

    I’ve accidentally had little hitch hikers a few times in brand new setups when using established plants and rocks, I was to scared to remove them and put them through more parameter swings! They always made it some how, maybe youth or the fact there was only 1 but I agree with using inexpensive shrimp or culls initially, better safe than sorry! Look forward to seeing your results, the tanks look great. I can’t believe how many different ways there is to set up a shrimp tank… size, soils, bacterias,filters, boxes, built in, ph, gh, lights, times, feeds, fertz! There’s prob 10 choices of each item and every combination 😂

    Could this be one possible drawback with setting up the tank like this.

      @@PapaShrimpTX interesting, I just saw it in your video. Looking good but you need some space at the bottom for the soil powder to sink otherwise your filter might clog very fast and you going to get a lot of soil powder dust in your tank in a little while

    • @PapaShrimpTX
      @PapaShrimpTX ปีที่แล้ว

      @ShrimpMania thanks for the tip! I've been paying close attention to that. That's the reason for one that has inlets on the bottom and the small one with inlets on top. The powdered dust on the initial tank setup definitely came out but it's easy to siphon. 2 and a half months so far on the first tank ... I'll keep checking it

    Clean tank, add new soil, add old water and filter, add new water, then add shrimps, al on same day, and never have any issues.
    And yes, also running Ph- soil.

      I hear a lot of things and I really don't know if these informations are true or just a bunch of coincidences/skills. Last one I heard:
      Adding shrimps, not bit a bit and since day 0. All new... Substrat, water and filter. Only adjusting temperature of waters and shrimps inside. He affirmed that there were no problems.
      I prefer to go slowly and if I would have some audience, even being very small, I would show this as a professional method and I'll tell to begginers better to be patient.
      Breeders need to go to the limit but we don't need to go there.
      Great job bytheway. I'm new, just discovered the Channel since last visit to the breeder. 😉👍🏻

      @ShrimpMania  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FlinJarri I know what said, it's always a bit of risk when you add shrimp earlier but what I noticed that with the shrimp the tank matures a bit quicker and better. In the future, I would just first use a cheap shrimp to cycle the tank and then replace them in a few weeks once the tank fully cycled.
