    When I first read God Emperor of Dune, I had just read the prior three books in the recent editions, and GEoD was a vintage, used one. The change from new to old gave my experience a mystical feeling, since the many differences in print added to the changes in the world across the thousands of years. I just found your channel on utube this evening. I am soooooo glad that you examined the books as objects. This is really important to bibliophiles such as myself. Readability and 'hand' is part of the 'mystique' of books, imo. Thank you so much. I've been putting off purchasing that last one with the blue pages but this clinches it for me. As I collect many other vintage books (Easton & Franklin, for example), the look and feel of a book is very important to me. Thanks again.

  • @sarmatiko
    @sarmatiko 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks for the review! It was really interesting to compare them visually, I was kind of surprised by above average quality of mass market paperback edition - from the experience, those glued books rarely live for long time. Cover artworks are wasted on that edition. I would happily buy Ace Deluxe edition on first occasion though, the only problem is that the series probably wont continue after one premium book.
    That Folio Society edition is really amazing. I'm fortunate enough to have hardcover Ukrainian edition of Dune that is almost exact copy of FS edition with Sam Weber illustrations and cover art. Obviously not the same quality (our hardcover edition sells for 10$ per book compared to FS 85£ for standard FS edition), with thinner paper and different cover material, but still looks and feels incredible.

    Sorry to comment on an old video, but i wanted to share that the current paperback series, the second one shown in the video, actually has a larger version with an extra inch or so added to page height and width. (Maybe they are new since this video came out?) I sampled a chapter out of the smaller version and ended up buying the larger version. The extra page size greatly alleviates the stiff pages and desire to bend the spine. My favorite edition is the 1999 Ace hardcover, dust cover is the same design as your first paperback. I love the design itself because it looks like the book is wearing a tuxedo, a distinguishing look to complement the text within. One of the few editions that comes in at under 500 pages for the main text (just barely crosses the 500 threshold if including the appendices and index). The pages are nice and thick and the font size is perfect, both comparable to the modern Ace deluxe edition. I've seen copies in great condition being sold for $30-40 so not much more expensive than the Ace deluxe or B&N LB for an edition that is IMO the penultimate hardcover edition of this book.
    Altogether I would say the best reading experience comes in the form of the trade paperback version. I'm still on the hunt for that beautiful 1980's TPB from Berkley, but for anyone currently looking to get into the books, I believe a TPB is currently in print following the same cover design as the current mass market edition.

    After all the hype, i purchased the movie edition. But man, that Burnes and Noble's Classic one looks so cool! I regret that i did not look for a different edition.

      You're welcome! Yes, the cover art on the 50th anniversary edition is beautiful. That's one version I wish I had.

    Jooooooo I got the dame Kobo libra (first one, not v2). I absolutely love that thing. In fact honestly, I prefer reading with an ereader most of the time due to all the conveniences. But reading a good hardcover feels special

    Gah! Where were you a week ago when I ordered the penguin Galaxy Edition! 😂 (Honestly, I just wish they'd release all 6 books in hardcover with reprinted dustjackets featuring the art from the late 70's / 80's... I'm sure you know the typeface I'm thinking of. Just *gorgeous*.)

    Great review! Thanks! I have the Ace Deluxe edition and love it. Do you have any recommendation for the other books in the series? I have seen a lot of various editions but not quite sure which to do for.
    PS: I saw the movie a few weeks ago and loved it! Have you seen it already?

    • @NateNakao
      @NateNakao  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! I absolutely loved the new movie! I'm so glad it's getting a sequel!

      I haven't found any new sets of the other books that I'm totally sold on yet. As far as I've been able to find, the best ones are older, out-of-print editions. I'm hoping that with all the excitement around the movie, we'll see some nice editions of the rest of the classic series become available

    I must be a book nerd as well. I enjoy hearing about the book as an object. I've watched several reviews on the readability of each edition. Very informative. I've listed after the blue edged edition. Have you seen the Easton Press edition?

    I own the Folio Society hardback edition. To me that is the perfect edition with the exception of the generic cartographic endpapers it’s contains - they really clash with the overall art style.
    The Barnes and Noble has nicer endpapers and a ribbon, which the folio edition lacks. Im British, so I don’t experience the extortionate delivery charges that overseas countries face for folio editions, but it was still quite an eye watering price. I do love paperbacks for transportability however 🙌
    I agree with one of the other comments on here about there being a need / demand for nice Messiah editions… those are sadly lacking.

    • @NateNakao
      @NateNakao  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I completely agree about all of this! And now, 2 years later, there are at least two really nice Dune Messiah editions, including one from the Folio Society.

    3:33 but isn’t there a trade market edition where the book is longer & you would probably not damage the spine?
