woman here and I just started tattooing last year. I can't speak for any other woman but for me it took so much initial effort to get over the gatekeeping and impostersyndrome and actually start (at my pace too and not being kept small and slow in some powerdynamic), but I am so happy that I did and people like you sharing their knowlege online and for free have had a big part in that. Thank you and pls never change
I am self-taught. Still learning. However, everything i picked up was from underground women tattoo artists. Im going to continue my journey being the best i can be. I love hearing these ladies' comments...
I’ve never wanted to do an apprenticeship dreading the idea of having to deal with some type of power dynamics or harassment so I’m here, learning from people like you online so thanks million 🙏🏼 ☺️
Appart from anything related to tattooing here, your speech is so understandable, clear, logic, and well pronounced. Let me tell you this is very rare to stumble upon such smooth and pedagogic dialogs. Very above the average haha
Im female, an illustrator but im learning to ne an tattoo artisr, thats y I come to your channel to learn tattooing and colouting techique, thanks for teaching us! very good lesson, sir!
I don't have an answer but I'm not looking for a job. I'm 68 and I've just always wanted to learn the art as another realm to create in. I also have a younger husband who's stepping in as my canvas. You're a good instructor, thank you!
Hi! Woman here, I’ve been looking into tattooing over the past couple of months. I’m a traditional artist and I’ve always been told I’d make a good tattoo artist. Your video caught my eye since I am very eager to learn before I even start practicing.
In my case I’ve been a stay at home mom for 20 years. I’m just now coming back into the workforce and can’t take on an unpaid internship. (My son has autism and I can’t give 40 hours a week to anything besides him) I decided to become a tattoo artist because I can still be there for him and have something for me that also helps my husband support us. This means your videos are a huge help because I can stop when needed and still make progress. There’s also the stereotype that women with tattoos or tattoo artists are somehow “easy” or only doing it for attention. I get a lot of backhanded comments even though I’ve been drawing for most of my life. Don’t get me wrong some women like the attention and that works for them but for those of us that only want to see our art loved, not our assets it’s off putting.
I’m 40 with my own shop now. When you get good enough for your work to speak for itself, you won’t have to argue your place anymore. I had other tattoo artists in my town look down on me. They keep to themselves now lol.
I think it’s because as a women it’s an incredibly hard industry to get into. I have had multiple failed apprenticeship bc my male mentor was only interested in me, not teaching me. I have friends who experienced far worse sexual harassment from their male mentor. I think a lot of women aren’t interested in the amount of beat down it takes just to be given a chance in the industry. I still have yet to had my chance and be given the opportunity to prove this is something I want and I can do. All of my personal experiences with the tattoo industry I’ll be honest have been not great and had really changed my perspective of tattoo artists. I still want to be a tattoo artist and I will still continue on push forward until my time comes but, it has been a very discouraging past few years as a women trying to enter the industry.
I'm sorry to hear that you've had such discouraging experiences in the tattoo industry. It's indeed regrettable that women in some fields are still faced with such challenges. Your experiences sadly reflect a far too common issue where women in male-dominated professions encounter discrimination and sexual harassment, something that most men have not even experienced in their daily lives. I wish you only the best and I'm confident that you can make it!
Try find a studio with multiple woman already employed there, stay strong and hold your own, call shit out that's not right, I hope you find a studio that wants your success and supports you in doing so xx good luck !
I’m a woman 16 years into the industry, and I’m sad to say I totally understand your plight. Luckily there are so many more woman-owned shops these days compared to when I stated in 08’. I highly suggest looking to work in that kind of environment starting out, once you feel super solid and the work speaks for itself…shut a hater right up! I’m rooting for you! ❤
As a working woman with a full-time office job i find it a bit challenging to be fully focused on my tattoo journey but i am doing the best i can and thanks to your videos im learning a lot. You are also a great person not just a great artist for sharing all of this and insisting on spreading ur knowledge and experience -i guess u have to be great person to be a great artist afterall ❤❤ full support from Lebanon bro❤
What every other woman here has said- for whatever reasons tattooing as a career has high chances of egomania? And power is usually accompanied by mysoginistic tendencies. Women absolutely are as capable of being fantastic tattoo artists as men but there are egos and gate keeping and easy grounds for sexual harassment. I’m starting off in a shop with another woman, a ~55 y/o who started her own because she was sick of being condescended. And was so happy to give me a start without the same issues she encountered. Thanks for the awesome video!
The reason I watched this video is that I'm learning how to tattoo on my own as a self-taught student, my parents were the ones who found my interest in art so they advised me to learn to do tattoos, and now I love to tattoo on fake skins so I hope one day I will be able to tattoo on real persons and start my job as a tattoo artist in the future, that's why I just started my own yt and tik tok vids. This is the first time I have watched your video and I really love how well you explain things and show some problems we need to look at before doing a color tattoo on a person, I'm glad to be able to learn a lot in this video, I hope to learn more from you in your furthermore videos!
I can only agree with the others. Learning in a male dominated industry ist extremely difficult. I’ve also dealt with men trying to harass me and being more interested in me than in teaching. Ultimately, I resorted to teaching myself through videos like yours. Later on, I managed to work with a very helpful mentor. He taught me a lot of things too and through him I still believe that despite all of my past experiences, there are good teachers out there, also as men. I think women are rising up in the industry, and hopefully over time, that quote will balance itself out 😊
Thanks for this video, currently studying up on colour packing and smooth gradients so this is helpful! I loved hearing your support for your colleague as well - the industry seems to be cutthroat at times and it's beautiful seeing thatt it doesn't need to be.
As a woman tattoo artist myself, I started by tattooing myself and friends until I felt comfortable enough in making it a career choice- I then decided to do an apprenticeship I found through Craigslist. My mentor was a black woman, and she was helpful in some aspects, however I mostly learned on my own. Now, I’m doing my own entrepreneurial route and have a passion for my craft that drives me to get up and do my best for every piece every day! Sucks everyone else has bad experiences with mentors in shops, however since I’m more underground, I don’t deal with the shop BS that normally comes with the “industry”. I love what I do, and every day is an opportunity to learn more!
I always enjoy your videos because of the content as well as how a macro lens is used. I was so surprised to hear that you work with Nadja Stadler. I absolutely love her style as well as her tutorial videos! Thank you so much for making videos!🙏Poppy
I was super lucky to find a mentor that wasn’t creepy or abusive. Most women aren’t at all so lucky. He made sure I only focused on tattooing and didn’t let me clean or help anyone in the shop and would bully any creeps that came in trying to rizz me up.
As a mom with a job I can’t afford to be without, it’s hard to get into my dream of tattooing but with teachers like you, I hope it’ll become a reality one day
Girl don’t give up. I was a single mom of 2 and learned at home. Now I own a shop! However, to really be successful, you have to give up a lot, family time, friends…. ALOT so you need a good support system. It’s a 24/7 job. When you said you were a mom, I felt the need to warn you so you can prepare yourself for the amount of sacrifice it takes. I wish you the best!
As a young 21 year old woman I wanted to get into tattooing, was taking college courses in art and had several men tell me that if I wanted to be in the industry I needed to be ok with being sexually harassed daily and disrespected. It seemed such a common response to me telling people my tattoo dreams that I decided not to do it. Now I am 35, unfulfilled in my well paying corporate job, and going for it after all these years. I believe things have gotten better in the last 15 years for women, but still recognize the struggles I will inevitably run into.
As an AFAB person (raised female and didn't have language for my gender expression until 2020, at which point I started identifying as non-binary) who got into the industry in 2006, there are and were many men gatekeeping and making it too painful, uncomfortable, inappropriate, or dangerous to be a female tattoo artist. The first shop I went to to inquire about apprenticeships even literally laughed in my face for asking. "We don't work with chicks," I was told. When I finally got an apprenticeship, one of the artists at the shop had a huge chip on his shoulder about it and went out of his way to sabotage me and make me feel unsafe and uncertain for months. Things have improved tremendously since then but it's not been a long enough time for us to see the industry really level out in a way you may have expected. In my experience, it's generally safe to assume men are the reason women aren't represented most of the time. Even if you haven't witnessed it, there are men out there who go out of their way to maintain that power structure. Women (and other groups of people) in all industries experience this, regardless of their ambition and motivation.
I did 2 apprenticeships. The first time I was sexually harassed a little bit and I was treated like a slave. The second time was at the same shop, years later under different management and it was a much better experience. I was never able to finish though as my shop needed more time from me and I had 2 kids very young and 2 jobs. If you're a woman and have kids, getting into this industry can be very challenging and cutthroat. My kids are 16 and 11 now, I'm 33 and trying to get back at it, self teaching and taking whatever courses local artists are giving
I'm sorry to hear you had challenging experiences. Your determination to return to the tattoo industry despite these obstacles is admirable. Self-study and local courses are great steps to enhance your skills. Your determination will surely help you continue your journey as a tattoo artist. Best of luck!
@Fani_Meherzi_Tattoo it's all part of the journey, I look back now and laugh at my first apprenticeship. It sucked at the time but that was about 15 years ago. Things have really changed and I feel like the industry has become more welcoming. Thanks so much for providing this content. I just really want to be able to grasp basics and pump out quick little bangers, and find a shop where I can work and grow as an artist. Love your channel.
Hi Fani, thanks for your informative video! You've found a new subscriber! I found it very useful as I'm trying to improve my understanding of colour. Do you use different rinse cups for each colour to avoid mixing the colours? Or would a mixed dilution be useful to achieving smooth blend?
I’m here because I’m relearning on my own due to constant sexual harassment in shops. I got sick of it now I’m just trying to do it right on my own accord without anyone bothering me.
Tattooing is and has been mostly men in the field so I think it can be intimidating to some wemon. And just knowing I'm pretty and have big boobs I wouldn't want to deal with the comments of them being in one's face or view. But at the end of day I can refuse to work on anyone for being harassed I'm ready for the challenge and really enjoy your videos since I am all self taught, no dragging shit out I stay watching to the end thank you
I like to tattoo, have three kids too and my husband is a doctor. So I do all around kids, he works. When they are healthy, I can work in tattoo. And feels very good! Even in these case I work only three days per week, from 8 AM to 3 PM. But my man college work even at 11 PM, and on weekend) So he have more clients) But I don’t want to switch with him))) And I’m in 15% women’s who watch this video) Thanks!❤❤❤
As a woman trying to learn to tattoo most artists I've asked to show me the ropes were more interested in getting me naked and showing off than actually teaching me. When I tell them I want to learn to do tattoos they ask why and always give me the patronizing "aw how cute" face. The industry is biker heavy and tattoos tend to have a reputation for being "manly" despite the large number of girly tattoo, hearts, feathers, and cutesy cartoons. When you say "tattoo" people think of skulls and bikes, and grim reapers, and whiskey.
AFAB tattoo artist here. As many women here have pointed out, it probably has less to do with you personally and more to do with male tattoo artists in general. The misogyny, harassment, bullying, etc that I personally experienced during my apprenticeship was unreal, and it was all under the guise of “paying your dues to the trade”…for an apprenticeship I was paying cash money for. I’m here lurking in your comments now because I stopped tattooing for a long time and I’ve just come back to it and I need to brush up on the basics. I legit started to trauma dump, but I deleted it all lmao let’s just say it can be BAD for women/AFAB apprentices in shops.
I am a woman who is in many groups of male dominant fields. I got a degree in math, a male industry. I am a computer hobbyist which is mostly men as well. Go figure, tattooing is another male thing i do i guess. I think woman are commonly in restrained roles because their role models set their expectations for their best self, and many female role models are not only chosen by us, but influenced by our parents too. lets be honest, many tattooed woman are negatively depicted in American culture. girls growing up see media where tattooed women are depicted as "Bad Girls" or out of control. This has been my experience at least. my mom hid that I had gotten a tattoo and I didnt know. my grandma saw it and was all like "Why did you tell me" to my mom who acted like i never told her. because in their generation, it labeled me as a women of loose moral character. I've been asked if i was worried about how it would look to people when I am older. Someone said people would think I'm a bad parent one day. its craziness. I am a mom, and my interest in tattooing has nothing to do with my parenting skill.
Not sure why as a woman. I would guess that women are less likely to try to learn tattooing at home, and perhaps a portion of your male audience is men trying to learn from home through TH-cam? It's really hard to say, because there are a huge number of women in the tattoo industry now, and certainly many, many lady artists. Either way, I found your channel today, having just started my journey as an apprentice yesterday, and I'm eager to learn as much as possible, and I can tell your channel is going to be of great help in this endeavor! Thank you for the hard work you put into your videos and trying to better educate those of us who are just getting started, or have a thirst for knowledge!
It’s 2024 the industry is NOT hard to get into for anyone. We have tattooing at our fingertips and apprenticeships are so much more easier than they were even 5 years ago. If you want it there is a way
I'm a woman and I think tattooing is niche, and a lot of women would get tattoos but unless they have been exposed to artist kind of life less likely to pursue this
I love tattooing and you're right its a total sausage fest lol i think its because drawing is fundamentally a practice in logic and spacial awareness which men are naturally better at and more interested in. At the same time women are naturally more emotional and perfectionist which is hard to be with a permanent medium such as tattooing. Just my thoughts..
always watching your vids and it helps me a lot.thanks for making a very impormative video like this.thanks man, always waiting for your new upload, i learn a lot on you man..🤍

Beautiful 😍
Do you change the needle for every major change of color or just wash it in water ?
Can you mix tattoo inks before tattooing to create a medium shade like you would with paint?
As a woman trying to learn to tattoo most artists I've asked to show me the ropes were more interested in getting me naked and showing off than actually teaching me. God thank you so much, my course could not teach me this properly.

Do you change the needle between colors or do you rinse it in the wayer?
Same question
I am a tattoo artist and I’m hoping to see you someday!!.. thanks
All the girls are busy tattooing lips and brows haha)
She's good
I'm newbie on tattooing
What skin do you use?
If you want it there is a way
I'm a woman and I think tattooing is niche, and a lot of women would get tattoos but unless they have been exposed to artist kind of life less likely to pursue this
Ktoś jest inteligentny bystry to sam się może nauczyc😮
Seeing videos like this always makes me sad...I am red/green colorblind, this type of work would be impossible for me.
If you need an artist sir I am willing to apply sir I am newbie tattoo artist from 🇵🇭 😊
I am on learning stage
Don't have a clue

One of the guys at my shop straight up said women don't belong in the tattoo industry cause we don't do it as well 🫠
Ugh, I just had a visceral reaction of disgust, disdain, and violent impulses for your coworker.
