I'm Mongolian and I'm soo happy to discover some Cambodian intangible heritage including Sastra and this beautiful instrument today! I hope Master Sok Duch's students can continue transmitting this magnificent musical tradition for the next generations! Respect from Korea :)

I can remember hearing the sound of this instrument at the end of each night of Khmer TV show in pre 1975 - how beautiful it was (and still is)!

In the North of Thailand they are also still playing this instrument. There it is called Pin Pia. "Pin" is the Thai way to say Veena. As the comment below from Sukanya mentioned, this is very likely a very old version of the Indian Veena (Rudraveena perhaps). Wonderful that the tradition is still alive in SE Asia.

Telluriana Mystic Ksediav and pinpia look like Tuila of india more than rudraveena , I thing , but rudraveena and tuila have calabash ,too.

I really envy Jeffrey Dyer who is fortunate enough to have received the gift of learning to play this precious instrument! One very lucky guy!!!

+Aιмι “Le Seхy Prιnceѕѕ” Mιĸυ Thanks for the info. I have been a self-taught musician (of Western guitar and bass) all my life and have now come to a point where I need to go back to my root. It's a dream of mine to combine Chapey Dong Veng (my most favourite instrument) with Kse Diev in an arrangement of Khmer-Western music (with both Chapey Dong Veng and Kse Diev as two of the lead instruments, along with nylon-string guitar and an electric guitar). One Day, perhaps! Many thanks for the info.

+Aιмι “Le Seхy Prιnceѕѕ” Mιĸυ Yes, I have always had a dream of doing something similar to Crow x Class; and, now I know it's entirely possible - although in a different musical genre, of course. Many thanks for the info.

+Aιмι “Le Seхy Prιnceѕѕ” Mιĸυ I am afraid you'll be in for a long wait: I live in NZ and have no access to those instruments, nor do I know how to play them - so, the best I can do is to sample the instruments and arrange them. Being a one-man band, I rely on the computer to do what I want, so that's a good thing BUT my health is not so forgiving these days :(

+Aιмι “Le Seхy Prιnceѕѕ” Mιĸυ Imagine this, however: Chapey Dong Veng is played like the Blues (i.e. call-and-response) and being my most favourite instrument, it will be the main lead being on the left - with Kse Diev being the other lead instrument on the other side of the canvas. Tro will roughly be in the middle, along with Roneat and the traditional drum.

+Aιмι “Le Seхy Prιnceѕѕ” Mιĸυ To me, music is all about expressing one's emotion and feelings using whatever instrument/s is/are available. I believe that, other than the bass guitar, traditional Khmer instruments can cover almost everything in the sound spectrum.

Dear Master of the Kse Diev and Cambodian Fine arts, I am from India and it is wonderful to see a primitive form of rudraveena. Can you please tell me the melody you played is connected with the name Samanta .
    Thank you

Kse Diev or Pin-pea in northern Thailad has only one string. Sok Duch, the only one Kse Diev player who survive from the Khmer Rouge 's year zero will surely die with happiness ' cause he has pretty good students who can conserve Khmer elegant musical heritage. I hope young northern Thai can do the same..............
