As a Portuguese person I apreciated this video very much. Is a weird and amazing thing to see your own country by the eyes of others . I'm from the central region and this video shows perfectly what I feel about my region. My home village still has 2 active shepherds but they are getting old and with no one to replace them bc it is extreme hard work for little pay. Viriato is the reason why so many of us refer to ourselves as "lusitanos". We may not know all the names of our kings, but everyone knows whom Viriato was. Fun fact:I can trace my family tree in my village (and around) to the early 13th century bc it was when our local, still active church was first build and they have birth, marriage and death dates/names in the church books.

Even though there are plenty of problems here, seeing your amazing video, reminds me everyday of how proud I am of my little/big country, its history, people, traditions, and great its simple beauty too. Thank you for loving this land as yours, because it is yours too. I hope you & family can eventually come up further North, to Minho where 🇵🇹 started and where the legacy of the Celts, Romans and Suebi lives and in my ADN heritage too. We at present are charting a March 2022 tour of the Aldeias Históricas of the Castelo Branco and Guarda regions… my husband, Milguel, a dear friend and myself, Thais da Rosa will add Castelo Novo. Your knowledge and enthusiasm of this part of Portugal is infectious and inspiring. How fortunate the boys are to have you as parents. As a portuguese I can certainly appreciate the way this video was made. So carefully done, with both the scenery and sights, and then with the accompanying narration, as well as the background music. I think that sometimes foreigners are the ones who remind us of our own culture and history, and teach us to appreciate them more. I am quite interested in History (and in Portuguese History), but there were many details here that I didn't know about. Thanks and looking forward to another one!

Great video, I'm of Portugese decent born in canada yet I can read and speak Portugese. in our family my grandfather born 1872-1965, was never addressed by his name directly. My relatives and friends from the area he lived in portugal always refered to him as Dom Antonio Miranda. my brother born in portugal remembers running around the vast Orchards grandfather had, as well as cattle lands and a Bullfighting ranch. we often teased our parants about the stories we'd hear. But little by little we've come to realize theres some truth to it all. In 2017 my wife (Canadian) bought us flights to portugal saying time you connect with your ancestry. As we walked around the Museum a museum curator hears me reading in portugese, he says wow so you speak our lauguage! so I explained to him in the process he recongnized my dilect. Asked me what were my family names Vieira & Miranda I told him. Well he tells me your background is firmly intrench in our history for both those names are on the ceiling in Sintra place as part of the 72 names of portugals nobility! so we checked it out and Wow it was true. Since then we've done more research, we have a family ring thats been estamated at around 300-350 years old of Iberian origin at a Museum. they asked my brother if he was Spanish he said no portugese! Aw!... there you go same thing Iberain, this is 24 cart gold this ring the ostrich feathers on the sides denotes two things its affiliated with royal authority, but also with the family name Miranda! So although today it means nothing as the Monarchy was done away with as well as the nobility its still very intresting, and now the stories of people stepping of the sidewalks tipping there hats to my grandparants in the old city, grandfather never shaving himself but each day a barber came to shave him in his home. the Bullfighting ranch given to my oldest uncle in 1943. Very sereal. So this video was amazing when I saw the Castles and Palaces the rich history etc.. I came to know that theres so much more to learn and see! both my family names originate in northern portugal, my Dad had crystal blue eyes was 6.ft 1inch humm, wonder where he got those jeans eh. please make some more of these videos as they help us touch our pass in our minds and hearts.
P.S. yes my friends are always amazed that Bagpipes are part of our culture!!!! who knew Lol

Enjoyed the passion with which you speak of Viriato and the Lusitanians.
I just wanted to mention that the Lusitanians were so successful at fighting off the powerful Roman legions because of their unique ways of warfare and tricks they employed - when the Roman legions would pass or march on a road, the Lusitanians were always waiting in higher ground and throw bee hives as bombs. The legions would disperse in no time and then they would attack with their favorite weapon the "falcata", which is a short sword designed for decapitations. They were also unique in the fact that 2 men would ride the same horse in open battle fields, one was only focused in driving the horse, the other was only focused in fighting, and thus, had a higher success rate in decimating the Roman legions. I find it fascinating stuff.

Nice video,I loved every second of it.I'm a history fan too.I was born in a little village close to the Serra da Estrela mountains it's the last village of the Castelo Branco district, called Sobral de São Miguel,40km to the west of Castelo Novo.A couple of years ago i came across a book called "the First Templar Nation" by an American called Freddy Silva and he has Portuguese ancestry.the author spent years digging in the National Archives in Lisbon and monasteries, and he came across ancient original documents proving that the Templars were founded 7 years before their until now accepted founding date, and 2 of the founders were Portuguese knights. When Afonso Henriques became King he signed with a Seal that basically says that Afonso was King of portugal and if you study the seal you will see that what is also said is that portugal became the Port of the Grail, the Holy Grail.Remember the Da Vinci Code, well Portugal was founded by Templars and their mission was to protect the Holy Bloodline,Portugal was never meant to be a Catholic country if it was up to the first King.,and as you know the Templars were a hush hush organization, and so was the Portuguese state up to the late 1800 when queen Mary abolished all religious and military orders, btw the first 8 Kings of Portugal were all excomunicated by the Vatican hehehe research some of these new facts discovered by Freddy Silva, like the seal or just type Portugraal in Google and see for yourself!! Have fun,I was so curious that i spent 3 months from October to December 2020 going from monastery to monastery looking for the signs especially in Batalha and Tomar, and i found proof and it is there for everyone to see.Enjoy!! Ps. are you Americans??You have a beautiful familly congrats!! check out the link it's in English.

Sangue puro lusitano? Sabe como viviam os lusitanos? Sabe qual a sua língua? A sua arte? A organização política? Os lusitanos eram pastores que viviam nas montanhas, cujos hábitos eram mais próximos dos povos neolíticos do que os dos romanos que os derrotaram! I love your videos! I also love history and travel, which is why I think they are so great! They also go deep with cultural information, and you use great, authentic time-period music. I am stuck in cold, boring Wisconsin at the moment, but I lived in Austria for 16 years, and I would love to retire to Portugal. Unfortunately my family is not yet on board with that. I would love to know how you grew up in Portugal, yet have a perfect American accent. I would also love to know how you came to live on that awesome self-sustaining farm in Spain. And where your family is from in the states, if that is the case. Please make more videos! I have watched all of these at least twice. It helps me combat my cabin fever.
