Something that always impresses me about Patti Smith is the genuineness of her intelligence. She is not just some rock star.

Yes, for anyone that hasn't ventured in to a Smith book yet are missing a very layered depth in to her sensitivity. As hard as Robert Mapplethorpe's life was, I think it is the highest compliment to have his story observed and told by someone such as her. Truly a gift.

Just like Patti, I got on a bus for NYC in 1967. Kids from all around the country were doing it, mostly headed like me for Greenwich Village. Reading Patti’s book about the many characters she encountered and the Chelsea Hotel sure brought back a lot of memories. Chances are Patti and I crossed paths somewhere back then. I worked at the Cafe Figaro where she must surely have had an espresso or two. It was an amazing time and place to be alive

I used to go to Cafe Figaro in 1974 with my best friend all the time...I would always order a cappuccino and a cannolli ....I loved that place...so many stories....

In my humble opinion, I feel like the most couragous people are the ones that are very uncomfortable with doing something, but do it anyway. This interviewer seems to be uncomfortable, yet he carries on, has respect for Patti, and asks some really good questions. My hats off to him and my hats off to Patti. I discovered Patti 20 min ago and now have watched handful of interviews with her and I am so grateful for the youtube postings and to Pattis honesty and presence. An instant inspiration.

I read the book three times--once to find out what happens, and twice just to enjoy. it's beautiful. Patti Smith, Thank you. .Just downloaded a bunch of the songs I loved many years ago and they still do it for me!

I've read *"Just Kids",* and I've listened to the CD version, and I loved *both.* I *laughed* during some of the story, and I *cried* during some of the story.

I disagree with some of you guys. Patti is very comfortable here; give credit to the interviewer who did a great job of making her feel welcomed and "at home." Both did a great job. She really opens up here.

BEST of all: it's available on 'books on tape' (CD actually) with PATTI doing the readings! Borrow from your library & let her read you to sleep... night after night... SWEET!!

Just read this book, given to me by a friend just a few days ago. I lost my mom a few weeks ago, my best friend that same week, and it couldn't have come at a better time. A beautiful memoir, story, artist, and memory of a life.

I remember Roberts death..it was my mother's birthday...Patti was such a huge influence....I remember seeing her and Robert at Max's Kansas City in 1973...it was a different time...and everything was all new and Beautiful...

Yes it was a wonderful book. One can only imagine what she left out but at least we get a sense of the times and I for one am grateful that she was writing with a positive outlook and not an angry voice, because she could have gone either way. She is clearly
healthy mentally and was able to step back and give us a narrative of her youth which embodied a sense of the artists experience of the time.

Am I the only one who’s annoyed by the interviewer? He seems really snide. Or maybe he’s just defensive because unlike him, she has little formal education and yet is a brilliant poet and writer and has won the National Book Award for what has become a bestseller.

Im guessing Patty got a good spanking due to her edging forward nearly slighting off her chair..yet maybe its merely sitting with such a square host interviewer...I wonder how long the slacks, horrible dress shoes, unimaginative neck ties & the classic formality of the knee over knee & the nervously swinging upper leg..I call the caffeinated foot disorder.

JUST KIDS was an entertaining read but Patti comes off as an Icon-loving naif who is kinda lost in an immature conception of poetry & Art. She's talented but she's strangely shallow

Ohhh you said that? Shallow? Immature conception..? Listen to the music and get that the Patti Smith Group grew up with us.
