GAS SHIELDED FLUX CORE WELDING FOR BEGINNERS

Gas shielded flux cored welding (sometimes referred to as "dual shield") is a topic that we've had lots of requests for lately. Before we get into various testing videos where we will dive deep into technique and different applications, we are going to introduce everyone to the basics. This video should give you an idea of what settings on your machine will do to your weld bead.
FCAW is no different than TIG, MIG and Stick when it comes to practicing. The first thing that you will want to do is to run as many straight line beads as you can. Run straight lines until you can't screw it up, then run some more.

In the late 70's Lincoln was developing the flux core for pipeline welding. The company I worked for , of about 3,000 people, selected me to run welding procedure for Lincoln in the field for welding high pressure gas pipeline from 0.125" wall thickness to 0.500" wall thickness. The wire at that time would to toe nail a lot. Toe nail phrase means it was not stable it would burn to one side and switch back to the other. We did get a procedure made to meet API 1104 pipeline welding code, the welds were x-rayed and mechanically tested per API 1104 code and passed the requirements.
    TIP
When welding a 30 degree V grove butt weld, the filler pass prior to the cap pass or final pass leave the prior pass below the surface about a 1/32" this allow syou to see the weld grove and allows you to make a nice weld cap or finish pass. If you do not do this you will NOT be able to see where your weld path is. This holds true for GMAW as well.

This is a great video, but if I may, next time you do a flux core demo, could you use a really cheap welding box? Something like the Century 90, or one of the harbor freight 120V titanium inverter welders, perhaps a 120v forney - you get the idea, a flux-core only cheap welder. For us guys and gals that are learning this just for weekend jobs, or for welding something like a fence of exhaust pipe. I love the videos, yours are definitely the best and my goal is after years and years of welding to make my best weld look like your bad welds!

Seconded. I'm a total neophyte when it comes to this stuff. And, like most beginners, I suspect, there's very little appeal to dropping a thousand dollars plus for my first right. This is gonna be hella expensive to my mind al ready, and that WITH a cheapie setup.
That said, I suspect the only demographic that would get anything out of this sorta vid will be mostly similar, and therefore in need of a much MORE introductory lesson. You started out great... then just dropped into preparing we know what all those terms mean

I have tried dual shield with my Lincoln 210MP with .035 dual shield wire. My machine when I set it to flux core wants me to change to electrode negative, so thanks Bob for clearing that up. One thing you didn’t mention that I ran into is i had to change to a knurled drive wheel. I was able to get some results but now that I have this new info I am going to try again. One issue I did have is the wire binding at the tip and bird nesting in the drive. I am thinking with these settings and the 5/8” contact distance this may not happen as much. I am thinking the dual shield “tubular” wire is a lit softer than the solid wire, and that, with the knurled drive wheel increases the chances of this problem. Thanks for a “beginner” video for us true beginners!

Had never heard about the correct tension. Wear an insulated glove when testing it!
Seldom mentioned is the gun tube liner, looks like a long coiled spring: hard to stuff a 0.055 wire down a 0.035 tube, and too big a tube lets the wire S-curve instead of advancing. Clean it sometimes.
You really want an auto-darkening helmet.

Hey Bob, you look kind of like an Ewok from star wars there at the beginning...
But I got a roll if that select arc 730, .045, same stuff you ran here...thank you, Zack from Select Arc. I would concur that it is a very forgiving wire. It's probably the nicest dual shield wire I've ever ran too. So thanks for the video, Bob. I haven't played around too much with the settings yet, but I've used it for a couple of jobs in 3/16" steel square tube and flat plate. C25 gas at 40 cfh, started at 450 ipm and 26.5 volts, ended up turning it down to around 390 ipm, at least by calculating the dashed lines on the dial of my old MM250. Mostly in the flat position, a little uphill, most of it not quite as clean as it could've been and even a little mill scale left on. Some straight pulling, some manipulation. Runs nice. ZERO worm tracks. I like it.

Would you be willing to video a shop on combating distortion? That's where I'm struggling right now.

Sir,if you were building a welding bed, what gage metal would you use and why?
Also what welding method would you use and why??
I'm going to have to build a bed, and I would like to know what the experts, like yourself would use to build a bed that will stand the tests of the oil and gas industry. Thank you sir for any information you can give.

Dual shield is nice for good looking welds, just it's easy to gas a weld depending on the type of weld your laying

I love flux core. It's not bad and it gets better penetration

Please could you suggest what could cause worm hole porosity in dual shield metal Flux core welding? There are probably several I'm sure. I occasionally get it and I'm not sure what I'm doing that causes it and that it's not everytime?
    Thanks

Is it possible to weld something that is zinc plated? What issues might I have? Just bought my first welder and I'm teaching myself so I apologize if this is a rookie question. But any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
