I’ve never cared for opera singers who just rely on thunderous notes. But I have to admit that Del Monaco’s cries of “Wälse” are truly incredible. I ran out of breath just by listening!

His voice is SO perfect for the Wagnerian repertoire. His voice is so strong and powerful that he does not have to "work" to produce volume. He can therefore also sing lyrically where many heldentenors are just forcing to try and be heard. His dark but still tenory tone perfectly suits the range and tessitura of the Wagnerian roles. Yes, his German is not the best, but he grew up at a time when Wagner operas were performed in Italy in Italian (and Verdi operas performed in German in Germany)

Just as I was thinking about Mario del Monaco being a helden-tenor before listening to this and not a Calaf. His top tone was too short in that one. Not either "Si puo". He was not a baritone but a heavy, dark tenor. He could as well have two Wagner orchestras behind him. Any singer would envy this volume and that sostenuto! Magnificent!

How can anyone quibble with Del Monaco in this section? It a heartfelt rendition by an honest, refined artist. He was steeped in the Italian tradition but remember, there were no “Wagnerian” singers during Wagner’s time. Most of the singers had Italian training then. Imagine the foremost singer of his time, late in his career, experimenting with a different repertoire and tradition. It was brave of him and says so much about his personality. He believed the leap was too radical. But he tried. He will always be remembered as one of the handful of great singers Of the post-WWII golden age, and a major force of the Twentieth Century. I was fortunate to heard him live late in his career in a concert at Carnegie Hall and Otello in Philadelphia. He left an indelible mark on me.

Each artist is unique, for talent, genius, study, but few are rare, Mario Del Monaco is unique and rare at the same time, exceptionally pure timbre, immense and infinite vocality, fantastic breath and without any effort, incredible live and attentive interpretation, crazy sound depth, it seems that every note comes out of a different musical instrument, it will remain in the past, in the present, in the future, indelibly, it is always a pleasure and a privilege to listen to it.

He was entirely right to avoid Wagner, as he himself knew well. In spite of his magnificent performance above, his was a genuinely Italianate production and sound,. Although he was often called, back in the day, an Italian Heldentenor, he himself knew the necessity of turning down the huge fees he would have been offered to sing, for example, a Tristan, in favor of retaining the opportunity for a long career.

To speak truth with you, I love classical music and singers and lyrical singers, but not deeply know singers. The question of Mario del Monaco is because since childhood I listened to my father and so I started to like deeply, for this reason, but I think if done a Google search for the phrase "Singers tenor" is very likely to appear this names. But I reaffirm that would not know a say in the perfect pronunciation of these singers. I apologize for not knowing inform with this precision. Big hug and thank you for visiting my and you have a good taste in music. Kind regards.

I'll let you use for free. Thank you very much for your attention. Big hug. Jonathan Gagliardi Madeira.

So many spinto tenors who sing Wagner always sing the roles of Siegmund, Parsifal, and Lohengrin. These tenor roles are for real heldentenors. Mario Del Monaco is a true dramatic tenor who has that quality of a heldentenor but was more of an Italian dramatic tenor than a Wagnerian heldentenor but however had to sing Wagner's songs anyway. The range of a full spinto tenor goes from (C3 - B4) or tenor low C to high B. A dramatic tenor would have the same range (C3 - B4) but they would extend down to his low extremes (A2 - B2) and up to high extremes (C5 - D5). Not as many true dramatic tenors make those coveted high D's like the high lying tenors (lyric tenor and leggero tenor) or extend down to low A's in the low parts of a high baritone ( character baritone and lyric baritone). Most dramatic tenors make great high C's in performance but not in as many roles that require such high notes unlike the spinto tenors. A heldentenor would have the range be low B to high A (B2 - A4) with a low baritone extension to G's and A's (G2 - A2) as well as an easy ability to explore a high tenor extension up to B's and C's (B4 - C5). Most heldentenors rarely sing those baritone low G's and tenor high C's in performance. Most of the heldentenor repretoire lies from low C to high A (C3 - A4).

Mio Dio! This is the sloooooooooooooooooooooooooowest version of this aria I've ever heard! If this conductor wants to kill Siegmund before the end of Act 2 he's certainly doing what he can to make that happen! Only Mario's greatness will keep that from taking place. Plus, the conductor is sapping so much of the energy out of this masterpiece of an aria by doing so and is fighting Mario as Mario is trying to push a faster tempo. Despite that......Bravo Tenore!

+Maven Whitlock I love Kaufmann and he may get there some day, but Del Monaco was simply the greatest dramatic tenor of the 20th century. And he was all out every night. BTW, check out (here on youtube) Del Monaco and Ramon Vinay in a performance of Verdi's Otello in Dallas Texas (!) in 1962. It's the duet Si Piel Ciel (MDM is Otello and RV is Iago). It's just audio and the sound isn't the greatest (attenuated at MDM's high notes), but it took my breath away. Vinay ruled as Otello for years before MDM came along.

Since Mario is dead and cannot defend himself against these very offensive defamatory comments then if they continue I'll continue to repeat the same things (I just copy this comment) out of respect to his memory. And other Mario's admirers surely will do the same with other words.

Del Monaco had a very powerful voice. His German here is mediocre. The orchestration here was also extremely slow. Del Monaco was known for being off pitch at times, and that was evident here. But if you like a powerful voice, he definitely has that. A better tempo would have helped this aria, along with some improvement in the German. But his dramatic voice was certainly suited for these heavy Wagnerian roles.

Italianate Wagner is glorious - Sandor Konya's Lohengrin for ex. (with von Matacic, though, NOT Leinsdorf).
But MDM does not have a beautiful voice, IMO, which is essential for any repertoire, not just Wagner. To me he sounds horribly off pitch and coarse. Ouch!
Just my opinion. We all hear with our own ears.
Thank you for posting this for reference.

  • @stefanwitte8469

the voice is glorious, it has got the dark colour the role needs, but it all sounds so wrong. it has got nothing to do with the part. The Wälse - as secure and ringing as they may be - are way too long, like somebody showing off his voice; and German is not a good language for him, I'm afraid.

    Per "bellinianodoc"
    "...posteggiatore da trattoria..." ?

Melchior had no heir . I wouldn't call him vulgar and primitive. DelMonaco worked hard , and gave 100% at every performance. Because he knew the public came to hear him. He had the voice. But Wagner is another kettle of fish .i would have spent at least a year learning Sigmund .
