Sadly these times will never be recaptured. I had just started marching in the comic brigades. Boostering door to door to raise funds. So many great memories. Bob was a icon RIP.
Being a little kid in Philly in the late 70s, with the Mummers, Super Sunday, all the Bicentennial stuff, etc., I just took for granted that the world was basically a big carnival. Adulthood was underwhelming, lol.
11:52 Tommy still goes up the street each year, he's with Polish American now, he left Quaker in the 1990s. He's been a good banjo mentor for me. It is truly a unique, lifelong, multi-generational hobby in Philadelphia.
Help me out here - Can anyone identify the string band tune starting at 12:52? Hearing it, I recognized (what I assumed was) 'You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile' from the 1982 'Annie' musical which came out 2 years after this parade recording and I can find no other writing credit going back any earlier than '82...I just know the Annie tune HAS to be based on something from circa the 20's or 30's, and this mummer rendition must be the 'real deal'...same melody, slightly different cadence. Such a sweet, wonderful tune.
Listen to those old school Philadelphia accents. These guys sound like my dad & my uncles did. Thanks for sharing this.

Allison Medora the one in the brown coat? Who was the girl in the black coat next to you?
I could only imagine what that Stringband Captains suit would cost today. Probably close to 10k.
At 2:17 was that Dave Roberts talking about the weather???
1980 the year I was born
