  • I continue with my series of walks in the New Forest, accompanied by my Whippet (Logan) with a visit to Minstead - a small village set among lush meadows, almost completely surrounded by woodland. The central green is overlooked by a quaint pub (The Trusty Servant Inn) whilst a scattering of outlying settlement ramble around a network of narrow lanes.
The walk takes me past many beautiful old thatched cottages, past the Furzey Gardens, through some charming wooded areas and ends at the All Saints Church (which has an unusual layout inside) that has a very famous person's grave in the churchyard {I give you a clue at the start of the video!).
The route of the walk comes from a book - “Pocket Pub Walks -The New Forest” by Anne-Marie Edwards - to whom I m grateful.

    Hello Dave.
Another splendid walk. The book you showed is the one you recommended to me and which I purchased a month ago, so it will soon be time to try a few of the walks out. I think I visited Furzey Gardens some years ago. Always remember it as rather beautiful. Interesting church. Very different to many of a similar age and the grave of Arthur Conan Doyle, together with the story was also good.

Very nice! I currently live in Indiana USA, but while researching my family tree discovered my father's family (Eldridge) originated in Minstead. I'm hoping to visit in person soon.

Wonderful walk Dave & Logan! Minstead has some very lovely thatched cottages.😍 I was rather amazed the church was that old when you 1st showed it, as it looks so modern compared to most I've seen now. However, I was really pleasantly surprised once inside. The long pegs, the double gallery, & especially the privacy box!💒
Btw...your clue gave "it" all away!😂

Great walk AGAIN Dave. Was that a Pompey Teddy Bear that I spotted on Conan Doyle's grave ? It wouldn't suprise me as he played in goal in the early days of Portsmouth FC.

Yes it was a Pompey Teddy. I didn't realise that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had a connection with the club - thanks for the information. Just looked up the details on the internet and it provides further details:" Portsmouth Association Football Club (1883-1896) - a precursor to Portsmouth FC - was an amateur team founded in 1883 by renowned Portsmouth architect, Arthur Edward Cogswell (1858-1934). Their most famous player was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Arriving in Portsmouth in June 1882, Doyle set up a medical practice at 1 Bush Villas in Elm Grove, Southsea. The practice was initially not very successful. While waiting for patients, Doyle began writing fiction, played cricket and also played as Portsmouth AFC goalkeeper under the pseudonym, "A.C. Smith". Portsmouth AFC were disbanded in 1896". Thanks again.
