@@Bullet4MyEnemy i find that the Aim-7M is a very capable missile (as in real life). The F model is....questionable. The Aim-7e is pretty useless and often wont track despite a solid lock. But Aim-7M is money
@@mikeck4609 I found aim7f disappointing in a tomcat, usually loosing track in shoot-down situations at a low targets. In an f4, however, I'm totally OK with it, it does better than the f4's radar anyways
Boresight is such a game changer, really turns the Phantom's forward quarter engagement abilities from a situational tool to something you can consistently rely on.
Really amazing piloting. I have next to no knowledge abt the skill ceiling in DCS, but watching you was like ingesting various narcotics. Fantastic work.
I ran that mission vs the Frogfoots so many times, trying to get Sparrow kills the old cage way as I ran in, and it just never happened. Looking forward to testing it out again.
Ran the mission a million times as well, and in my case I was able to get sparrows to track by going beneath the froggies and shooting at them against the sky - this way the radar doesn't have ground clutter (as well as clutter from the side lobe if you've done everything correctly). Although it's better to do at least above 1000 feet (with frogfoot being even higher).
you helped me alot didnt really understand the patch notes but now i do and its big improvement and i tested the wide bore sight mode i got it to work 2/3 tries on a head on with a Mig 21 about 5-7 nm.
Honestly blew my mind that it connected 😂 I have such a bad time using Sparrows in this thing normally, Jester acts like his eyeballs were fitted backwards most of the time.
I remember discussing with you before F4 released how we thought Jester would behave and if he would be really overpowered compared to a human or not....I guess they went with the safer option of him being relatively inept. Anyways this video seriously rocks and is the Phantom sparrow video we all needed to see, bravo!
I believe wide aspect doesn't work well because it sets the speedgate so wide that the ground clutter returns will outshine any target. It might be useful on upward-looking shots?
[context] I believe that this fire mode involves shooting off the sparrow before it's completed a bunch of strange tuning steps - the seeker receives doppler(?) data regarding your groundspeed and the targets speed and uses those to set speedgates. In "normal" operation this info is gathered from the radar and tuned into the missile, but the aspect switch can be used to guesstimate some of those parameters. Wide aspect doesn't really tell the missile whether the plane or the ground behind is coming at it faster, so doesn't know what to lock.
@@huebiscuit Still not the most flawless or brain dead weapon ever, but having the responsibility to make them launchable out of Jester’s hands is a huuuuge improvement.
I think he might be just spotting helis visually (fuck knows how) or reciting what the in-game AWACS says. I’m just guessing though, most of the time for me he’s about as much help as an ashtray on a motorbike.
Do you need the target to be centered on the nose for the radar to see until impact? I mean it would make sense due to it being a fox 1 but i also got splashes when i didnt point the nose directly at it.
@@ilankeren1449 Technically yes, but depending on the range and altitude, it’s possible to be quite a long way off target due to radar side lobes, or even reflections off the ground continuing to illuminate the target.
Sparrows remember their last course (or turn), and if the illumination is gone, they will continue their turn towards the target like they were going before. So if you loose your borsight in a few seconds until impact, the sparrow will still connect
So now you just go Boresight mode, put the enemy plane on your reticle and you just fire your sparrow ? no lock needed?i mean this is great if i am not mistaken?
@@Bullet4MyEnemy Do you get any indication from instruments that you should shoot, or is it just about praying you did it right? Great video by the way, I will definitely give the F4 another go knowing that, thanks!
It’s a personal experience vs luck type affair, no shoot cue. You can just ripple them off at nothing if you want to, you’re not telling it where to go, just what to look for in terms of closing speed difference.
I cannot get this to work. It will lock but missiles instantly go stupid. I like the cage mode but by that time your already getting shot at because jester couldn’t find the moon in he was laying in the desert…..
There’s no guarantee it will work, definitely a bit of luck involved, but the idea is that you don’t need a lock - so if the target is low altitude and Jester has no hope of seeing them amongst the clutter, you can fire regardless. You just need them to be in the radar cone, and within the speed gate of the setting you’re using.
I must be doing something wrong. When to use aft or tail? When to use front or nose? About 75% of my shots don't track even when right behind a bandit .. either in aft or tail mode
Think of a clock face, where nose and tail are 6 and 12 o’clock respectively. Then forward is 2 wedges between 3-5 and 7-9. Aft is 2 wedges between 1-3 and 9-11. But it’s all relative to closure speed, so if you’re closing extremely fast but they’re travelling towards say 10 o’clock, Tail might still be the better pick than Aft. There’s also the matter of the seeker just not seeing them for whatever reason even under ideal conditions - it isn’t an infallible system. Also, you need to aim the nose of the aircraft at the target to ensure they’re in the beam, and it is a very narrow beam; which is partly why I was so amazed that first shot connected when demonstrating it, must’ve been close enough that the target was still being illuminated by a side lobe, because the nose was pointing nowhere near by then.
